I just need someone to tell me to join the gym already!

So, I’ve found a gym I actually want to join - it’s local, has loads of classes, and tons of machines (so no waiting around like at PureGym or The Gym). My goal is to lose some body fat. I play tennis and see a PT once a week, but when it comes to actually signing up and sorting out the membership… I just turn into the laziest person alive.

I don’t know what’s stopping me - I want to go, I know I’ll feel good once I start, but I can’t seem to get myself to just do it.

Can someone please give me that friendly shove to just sign up so I can start going?

Hey. Get your arse into gear and join the gym. And then make sure you actually go - she says from bitter experience.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 02/11/2025 15:12

Don’t do it. Go for a long walk most days, and put the money towards a monthly massage instead

ThatsNotAKnife · 02/11/2025 15:16

Go. Just aim for 40 mins. 5 min warm up (Cross trainer) 30 mins of whatever you fancy, machines / free weights / TRX / pushing sledge etc, then a 5 min stretch.

Mumsworkneverdone · 02/11/2025 15:17

Hi OP I do F45 (HIIT classes with PTs) because I need their motivation to push myself. Very expensive but worth it to me as when I had a gym membership I wouldn’t go or push myself when there. Perhaps looks at a trial for your local f45.

The easiest way to lose fat is to eat less. Exercise is for making you fitter.

ParmaVioletTea · 02/11/2025 19:42

Gym is fun!

Just go there every day and eventually you’ll event do something there. Or sign up in advance for classes and then of course you have to go.

When I’m sitting in boring meetings at work I sit there thinking “I could be at the gym, lifting heavy shit.”

notacooldad · 02/11/2025 19:47

Walking and massages are great but resistance training is very important for bone density.
Maybe the op can walk, go to the gym and have the occasional massage

Go, your future self will thank you.
A PT I often see on social media talks about being consistently average. That’s all I aim for, showing up for 1/2 hour is better than nothing, even if it is a bit half arsed. But usually I get there and do better once I get started. It’s always harder thinking about it than doing it.

Wolfiefan · 02/11/2025 20:02

Plan the classes you want to do next week. Join and get a session with a PT to set you off with a plan. You’ll feel great once you get stuck in.

MiddleAgedDread · 03/11/2025 11:13

Have you joined yet?

IsntItDarkOut · 03/11/2025 11:18

I joined in September, talked about it on and off for YEARS. I love it, should have done it years ago.
I use the gym and go to classes, I get great value out of it. I paid the full year in one go which is the equivalent of £5 a week.

Go to the gym because it will improve your mood, increase your strength, cardiovascular fitness and mobility.

However as said above, if you want to reduce body fat - that's down to food, almost entirely.

Isn't he fab? I have him on my Instagram, and he's so funny (& talented).

Gymbunny2025 · 04/11/2025 21:40

I mean if you lack motivation to even join, which is meant to be the fun bit, what are the chances of you not going and wasting your money?

TheFoz · 04/11/2025 22:57

@TheRealGossipGirl i joined last week. I’ve gone two days in a row and am going again in the morning so that’s three days. My aim is to go 4 times per week, 2 classes and 2 just doing my own thing. I have a PT session tomorrow.
Yes I’m shite and can only manage a few minutes without needing to take a break but it’s a journey and every day I’ll get a little bit better.
I’m thrilled that I’ve joined. I’m buzzing for hours after a session and I can’t wait to see and feel the benefits in the weeks and months ahead.
Go!! You won’t regret it.

YelramBob · 05/11/2025 17:42

Joining a gym is literally the best thing you can do with your life. Women need to be fit and strong and if you don't tackle it head on now you'll end up in middle age with poor mobility, weak muscles and osteoporosis.

Do you see women around you who struggle to walk up a flight of stairs or carry shopping bags? Or who can't put their case in the overhead locker on the plane? Of course you do, don't become one of them! Get your arse to the gym lady 😜

FinallyMovingHouse · 05/11/2025 17:45

In 3 months do you want to be geeing yourself up to join the gym, or having been to the gym regularly and starting to see real changes. Stop arsing about and go!

TheRealGossipGirl · 09/11/2025 11:37

A big thank you to everyone who encouraged me to go to the gym and shared their own experiences - it was exactly the push I needed! I’ve officially joined a gym that’s about a 20–25 minute walk from my house, and it’s absolutely stunning inside, so I don’t mind paying a little extra for it. I went for the first time on Friday - I was a bit nervous at first, but I popped in my headphones and just did my thing. And honestly, as many of you have said, nobody cared what I was doing!

I did notice that I wasn’t very confident with the machines, and I had to stop myself from just staying on the treadmill the whole time. I still managed to do some weights though, which is a start! I’ve also decided to get a personal trainer - I spoke to her briefly, and she seems great, so I’m looking forward to working with her.

I really want to make a change. I’m tired of looking in the mirror and wishing I looked better in certain clothes, so it’s time to do something about it!

Join the gym already. Oh, you have. Keep going to the gym already!

minipie · 09/11/2025 12:09

Well done! Next step, make it a routine, like you ALWAYS go to the gym at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10am on Saturdays. In your diary and you only skip it if there’s really no choice. That’s how you stick with it.

Just think how your gonna look, once you see your body start to change ie you’ll notice it in your clothes first, you’ll realise nothing but hard work in the gym can get you that body. Best of luck.
