Swimmers- what do you do when the pool is shut?

Swimming is by far my preferred exercise but our local pool is shut for an indefinite period.

If you’re a regular swimmer, what do you actually enjoy when you can’t swim? I feel like I’m missing something with my ideas.

Honestly? Find a different pool to go to, less often if I’m restricted with time.

I have a council membership that means I can swim in several different pools so I pick whichever suits me best that day. I know that not everyone has that option though.

Yes, I go to another pool!

If it was shut for a long period I would find another pool, and have to go less often (I live 6 mins from my local pool). When it’s shut for galas etc I do something else - strength workouts, or running. But I do those anyway through the week. If you look on YouTube there’s also workouts that are out of the water but for improving your swimming technique. I do find swimming to be the only exercise where my brain switches off and I get that “feel good” buzz afterwards though, so if my local pool was shut for ages I’d def be looking for another one!!

When it happened to me, I used the gym as part of my membership, but I only like swimming so it was quite annoying. If you have to use another pool, I hope your usual pool is freezing your membership so you're not out of pocket.

There are no other pools available, hence the question.

I like swimming too. If the pool was shut I'd do gym, running and home workouts. Those are the other exercises I do, so not sure which parts of them are the best equivalent of swimming, Maybe rowing?

tinageta · 01/10/2025 12:34

I only swim in natural water bodies. Are there any nearby? You can always put on those special clothes if the water is too cold.

rbe78 · 01/10/2025 13:53

There's not many options, are there? Find another pool, swim somewhere natural, don't swim.

Or buy your own I suppose...

moresoup · 01/10/2025 13:55

Walking /jogging? Exercise bike?
I also like pilates.
But I need to swim, so I would just find another pool (can't do open water, the cold makes me unwell)

SeaAndStars · 01/10/2025 14:46

I swim in the sea. It's never closed.

Seriously though, if I'm not swimming I walk in nature. Something about the peace, outdoors, fresh air, quiet gives me the same clean, exercised, relaxed feeling that swimming does.

MinnieMountain · 01/10/2025 15:52

You’ve got what I mean @SeaAndStars . I have been walking lots. I’ll have to stick with that. I’ve also asked if the local rowing club is doing beginners courses.
