Starting off with hand weights

Hi

Im early 60's and know that using weights is going to be beneficial for muscle and bone loss.

Ive got some 2 kg and 3kg hand weights already and was wondering if they will be enough for programmes like Lifting with Cee and Caroline Girvan on Youtube?

Ive got no idea on whether one is better than the other for a complete novice.

I would be very grateful for peoples experiences with what hand weights are needed and which might be the best programme to follow.

Thanks again

Start off with the dumbbells you have.

When you can get to the end of sets without struggling too much, go up a little bit in weight.

Gym people call it progressive overload

You’re likely to find you can manage different weights for different exercises.

It’s good to have a selection for different exercises. Legs you’ll be able to go heavier probably even to start, arms may never get beyond 2-3kg for some! I would get some 6’s for legs and then get started.

As above, once you aren’t struggling at the end, go heavier. Good luck!

Agree that legs you might want heavier, maybe some 5kgs or similar to start, but you’ll soon get a feel for where you’re at.

The Caroline Girvan Total Beginner course on her app might be a good place to start, the exercises are simple and shown and explained well. There’s a long free trial period too.
