Hi, I want to take up running. Just wondering how you transport your water bottle, keys and phone? Thanks.

Also, recommendations for running trainers would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I've tried a few different things and nothing felt comfortable. I now prefer running leggings with a zip pocket at the back and thigh pockets each side. It's enough to keep my phone, keys and money if needed. I have my phone in a thigh pocket and it doesn't move it bother me.

I've always got on well with new balance trainers, they've never rubbed or caused any issues so I stick with those. I can usually pick up a pair under £50.

I'm back! I really enjoyed it, actually. I probably did a bit more walking than running, but I did it.

Thanks for all your support and suggestions. I'm gonna keep it up and am registered for Park Run on Saturday.

Thanks again.

Brilliant

yes a parkrun is a brilliant idea.

Well done!! This stage of the programme is about building stamina so go slllloooowly. It took me 3 weeks to get past the first week on C25K as l couldn't even keep going for 60s!

I record my sessions on Strava - the free app. Don't need to pay for it.

NeedToAskPlease · 13/07/2025 14:16

In regards trainers, l waited until l was a few weeks in to check I'd actually keep it up...
And then l got a gait analysis at Runners Need and was fitted for Mizunos.... at a cost of £110.

I've never paid that since as now l know what fits, l buy them online and stick to that until l can't purchase the model anymore. I was originally fitted for Mizuno waverider 25 and I'm now buying up the last available 26... as version 28 is out.

You don’t need a water bottle unless you’re running more than 10k. Just hydrate before and after. I use a Fitbelt to carry my phone and keys. Perfect as it doesn’t jiggle at all and holds everything snugly

You may not require fluid but others do.

I certainly do... even on a 5k in winter.... and it has electrolytes in.

@EdenFromTheEast - you need to find out for yourself what works. Do listen to others opinions but time will show what works best for you.

Well done op

Your only competition is yourself so dont worry what you look like or what others might think or whether it was more walking than running or whatever etc you did it. Be proud of yourself and enjoy that time you dont have to think about all that you have to do and everything everyone else needs from you. We all need to take time to focus on keeping our mind and body healthy. So glad you enjoyed it 🙂

Scarydinosaurs · 13/07/2025 15:09

Woohoo! First run done!

And everyone feels silly at first - but soon you won’t care.

Pickingmyselfup · 13/07/2025 15:59

Depends what I'm carrying.

Today wasn't a long run and I had 2 pockets in my shorts so I put my keys in one, phone in the other and carried my 250ml bottle of water.

If I don't have pockets but only need the above I'll take one of those small running belts with me.

For longer runs with fuel and extra water I'll use my running vest. I just bought a new salomon one with loads of space. I might also use it if it's a short one but I'm planning on a trip to the shop to get a few bits after my run.

There seems to be a real thing about people having a bee in their bonnets about people using a vest on short runs because "it's not necessary" but who decides what is necessary. Use whatever you feel comfortable in to carry whatever you feel the need to carry.

Parkrun's a lovely community with all kinds of runners. It's a great way to appreciate the diversity of runners and how they approach it.

APC303 · 19/07/2025 08:17

House key in key pocket in shorts. Hand wrapped with a Buff and phone folded into it. Drinks only if running long otherwise just drink before and after.

passmeaglass · 19/07/2025 12:22

How did you go with parkrun?

EdenFromTheEast · 20/07/2025 10:53

@passmeaglass it was cancelled due to the rain and threat of a storm. I still went for a run, though. On my own.

How do people do Couch to 5K outside? I have an iPhone. Is there a way that it can tell you when to run/walk?

Yes, you just need some headphones that connect with your phone, either wired or via Bluetooth. You can get running headphones that hook around your ear, I find them more secure than ear phones. You can listen to other stuff too, like music or podcasts, and the running instructions will just cut in as necessary.

Well done for getting out on your own! Motivation is half the battle.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/07/2025 08:26

@EdenFromTheEast if you download the NHS C2 5k app,it will tell you when to walk/run. You can play or own music/podcast and it interupts with walk/run sessions and motivational tips as needed.

Scarydinosaurs · 21/07/2025 22:53

Well done for still getting out there!!

I am going for my first run in a minute. I bought new trainers yesterday and some leggings so I'm all set. Feeling a bit scared that (a) I can't actually run; and (b) that I can run, but look like a twat whilst doing so.

My running form is weird, I've seen myself on video and I look ridiculous but who cares 😄

I've run marathons and ultras so it's not done me any harm!
