Runners... how do you carry your stuff?

Hi, I want to take up running. Just wondering how you transport your water bottle, keys and phone? Thanks.

Also, recommendations for running trainers would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Buy a trail running back pack.

thaisweetchill · 10/07/2025 19:43

bag that goes round my waist (small only fits phone and one key in) and have a running water bottle

BusWankers · 10/07/2025 19:45

You won't need a water bottle for the short runs you're doing at the beginning.

Put phone and keys in a pocket.

Merrilydancing · 10/07/2025 19:46

Unless I am doing large distances, I generally don’t take a water bottle. However, if you have taken the insane decision to take up running in a heatwave, then take a bottle!

My running tights have a pocket for my phone and key.

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/07/2025 19:47

currently I am using one of these with squishy water pouches (don’t know the technical term) on one side and my phone in the other

however you only need water for longer runs (in my case over 15k) or on hot days. You can get shorts with a phone pouch and smaller key pouch. I only take my phone on longer runs.

you need to go to a running shop for shoes. Good brands include saucony, new balance and asics but there are plenty of others.

good luck

scoopoftheday · 10/07/2025 19:49

I usually run from home and leave the key under the plant pot 😬

Phone goes into the pocket of my running shorts and I don't need water for a 5k.

I wear Brooks runners or Asics. Asics are cheaper than Brooks but I find the Brooks more bouncy...

Greenfingers37 · 10/07/2025 19:51

I love my Brooks Ghost shoes but a friend passed on some Hoka Bondi 9s and I’m hooked!!

EdenFromTheEast · 10/07/2025 19:51

Loads of info here, thanks so much!

I have a waist belt with pockets to contain my keys, phone and my headphone case. I don't take water with me, I chug some at least 30mins before and have a bottle filled and waiting after. I run about 10km/6miles normally. If it was longer then that I'd get one of those vests with sections for water and snacks.
Shoes wise I'd advise going to a shop that does gait analysis to make sure its a supportive shoe for you. I like my asics because I roll my foot inwards and the cushioning pushes back... stops me getting pains up my calf etc

TigerRag · 10/07/2025 19:52

I use a waist belt from Harrier for short runs

As for running shoes - try a few on. I run in Asics currently. I've had Brooks and Saucony. I found that Hoka were far too narrow. That was their standard fit and I went up a size

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 10/07/2025 19:52

Running shorts and leggings have a zip pocket for ear bud case, bank cards, donor card (essential in case I drop dead, my kids think this is hilarious) and parkrun card with ICE number.
Hankies get tucked into my sports bra. Cotton hankies are much better than tissues.
Phone and front door key goes on arm phone holder.
I take a small water bottle if it's really hot like this week. But for a standard 5k town run in cool UK weather home and back or parkrun then I don't carry water on me, at parkrun it gets dumped in a bag at the start. I did carry water when I first started then eventually realised I was never drinking it.

KvotheTheBloodless · 10/07/2025 19:53

A hydration vest/race vest. I usually carry one for my phone, keys, earbud case, inhaler and water. If I'm going to be out for hours I'll also take snacks, gels, a first aid kit, waterproofs in winter.

I run long distances, so I have a Salomon vest which is absolutely brilliant and holds loads, but it's pretty pricey. I'd get something cheap and basic to begin with, you won't be running far at first.

Phone and keys in pocket. Hold the water bottle. I like the ones that are easy to hold:

kirinm · 10/07/2025 19:57

Lots of running shorts / leggings have pockets. A key and phone in pocket. I don’t take water unless it’s super hot and then I just kind of carry it as best as I can.

GreenSmithing · 10/07/2025 20:00

Most running shorts have a thigh phone pocket and a zipped pocket on the back for keys.

You can take water if you like, but for most of the UK, most of the time you really don't need it for runs of half an hour, and personally I don't bother for anything under an hour, just drink before and after. (I guess if you're out this weekend in 32 degree heat, you would need water, but there's no need to be running in those temps.

Shoes are very individual and worth going to a running shop to get fitted.

EdenFromTheEast · 10/07/2025 20:03

Really glad to hear that I probably won't need water.

BusWankers · 10/07/2025 20:09

You can get all sorts of accessories. But there's no need normally.

You can get leggings with pockets in the leg, which are perfect for phones and keys.

Trainers are really personal, depends on running style, your weight etc. best to go for a few runs in whatever you have (not flat ones) or get some cheaper running trainers, you can wear for things like days trips for now and just see how you go. You don't want to be spend ££££ and find you hate it after 3 runs!

Just watch out for your knees of you're overweight.

BestZebbie · 10/07/2025 20:43

Not a 'runner' by any stretch but for Couch to 5k I used a bum-bag that was bought for festival (worn at the back above my bum, not on one hip) and just drank before and after. Classier, thinner bum-bags marketed for runners exist, and the search term is "running belt".

LemondrizzleShark · 10/07/2025 20:45

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/07/2025 19:55

Phone and keys in pocket. Hold the water bottle. I like the ones that are easy to hold:

This is so person-dependent / I can’t bear to have anything in my hands at all!

I use either a very small running belt or backpack. I thought a waist pack would be great but actually it bounced about, and I found running vests chafed my inside arms. I am small with big breasts though, a taller/thinner person would probably have no problem.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 10/07/2025 20:49

Shorts with pockets. Take your keys off the main key ring and only carry what you need.

I don’t bother with water unless I’m going over about 8/9 miles and if I’m doing that I’ll take my hydration vest. Then you can fill up the pockets of that with all sorts.

GleefulGiraffe · 10/07/2025 20:51

If you do want to get a belt or running vest, check it fits your phone first. I've had a few that just can't fit anything bigger than maybe an iPhone SE.

WellyBellyBoo · 10/07/2025 20:54

Flip belt or Sweaty Betty power leggings/shorts. I don't carry a water bottle for under an hour. Keys are just the ones I need (two front door keys) I leave there keyring full of other keys at home.

Fizbosshoes · 10/07/2025 20:57

I like to run with as little as possible, so if no one was going to be in I would just run with my keys in my hand or put in a hiding place.
I would do up to 5 miles without water in this weather, probably up to 10 miles in cooler weather. I have a hydration vest for long runs and I put my phone/water/gels/keys in it....but it was expensive....so I would invest in a waist belt and water bottle first as they are cheaper!

BashfulClam · 10/07/2025 21:02

It really fucks me off that so many gym leggings have no pockets! We need somewhere to keep our stuff the sane as men do. When I go to the gym husband has handy, deep pockets for his phone whilst mine has to lie on the fooor etc (hate the armbands etc) or on the machine.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 10/07/2025 21:16

running shorts with pockets. Phone in one and keys in the other. If only one pocket, I use a nappy pin for my door key or attach it to a bit of string round my neck and tucked in my bra. Water bottle held in hand if I take one - I generally don’t. I don’t tend to do more than 10km.
