Runners... how do you carry your stuff?

Hi, I want to take up running. Just wondering how you transport your water bottle, keys and phone? Thanks.

Also, recommendations for running trainers would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Oh, and I think those trainers look fine for a beginner runner as long as they fit and are comfortable. If you haven't started running yet, you probably don't want to get your gait analysed and 'correct' anything about what comes naturally, because you won't know what does come naturally yet. Those shoes are neutral (not correcting anything about your natural gait) and look comfy enough with some cushioning.

Yep whereas the default for men is decent deep pockets. We have to buy armbands, landers, waist pouches….just add decent pockets please

Part of the reason I wear mens shorts is because of the pockets and because they're long enough that I'm not showing my arse

I'd personally try trainers on instead of just buying them online. Look out for last seasons as they're cheaper and usually it's just a change in colour

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 11/07/2025 12:46

Our running shop has trainer company reps in a few times a year. They bring their newest style in loads of sizes (women and mens) and we can all have a 5k run in them if we like. No sales pressure at all. They get feedback on their shoes and we get to test a potentially £150 trainer brand. It helps us decide what brands suit our feet. Our running shop also has a small discount for anyone signed up to parkrun. They do a free 5k run every week as well. Really nice in the winter when I'd never bother to go out after dark and in the rain.

Flip belt for phone and clip in my house key

water in my hand if needed or for a very long run, a running vest with flexible water bottles that slot in - Saloman one is best

jamanbutter · 11/07/2025 13:09

I have a small back pack for keys phone and holds a water bottle.

TigerRag · 11/07/2025 16:33

If you have a decathlon near you they tend to have some decent and cheap stuff

BusWankers · 10/07/2025 19:45

You won't need a water bottle for the short runs you're doing at the beginning.

Put phone and keys in a pocket.

Edited

in this heat? are you joking? also quite reductive of you to decide whether OP needs to carry water or not 😳

Riverswims · 11/07/2025 17:58

a flip belt has a key clasp, you can buy their curved water bottles to fit in it, you can stick a phone in it but I don’t and I’d advise visiting a running shop for advice otherwise running shoes are a lottery. enjoy

PluckyBamboo · 11/07/2025 18:15

I bought a moneybelt that was just big enough for keys, phone and an emergency £5 in case I needed to buy water. Also comes in handy to stop your top flapping around at the waist if you find that annoying.

I didn't carry water for running as I was usually only out for 45 mins (short dumpy legs so never ran far 😆)

EdenFromTheEast · 11/07/2025 19:24

Thanks everyone, I am off to Stratford Westfield tomorrow to buy trainers, leggings, a top and a belt bag.

Another question... do you wear sunglasses when you're running?

OP posts:
NeedToAskPlease · 11/07/2025 19:47

I always carry electrolyte fluids... for all distances. I sweat heavily. Experiment for yourself whether you need to carry fluids or not.

My running leggings have a pocket for my phone.

I have a keylock on the front of my house for the front door key.

JulesJules · 11/07/2025 20:00

No useful info, but are you following Rachel Hewitt?
I'm subscribed to her emails and she writes a lot about running, including the kit she uses.

Yes to sunglasses but only when it’s sunny. You could try your usual ones but lightweight ones are best

Yes if you do then you can get everything there

yellowgecko · 11/07/2025 20:37

If you buy a hat, get a visor one. Baseball caps are really sweaty. Visor keeps the sun out your face but lets the heat escape

Does no one else find that these so called " phone pockets" just end up sagging which is kind of a hinderence. Plus the weight of the phone ends up pulling the leggings down .

Personally , and this is only if the desired result from the running is to lose weight, id recommend shorts over leggings. They look and feel better/more comfortable than leggings if you do drop a few pounds. Not that you have to give a fuck how ya look of course. ( you should see the state of me running 😳😅)

EdenFromTheEast · 11/07/2025 21:21

@Whatwouldscullydo I have thought about shorts, but I am a size 14 with horrible cellulite.

fthisfthatfeverything · 11/07/2025 21:39

Phone on a running wallet strapped to my arm. Keys, car key taken off the bunch and put in my zip pocket on my shorts.
No water until run is finished then sip water whilst cooling down

Edited to add: tissue in my bra 😆

Scarydinosaurs · 11/07/2025 21:44

No one cares what you look like, but you will care how you feel: wear shorts.

Sports bra with phone pocket in the back is much better than side pockets. Check on Amazon.

Enjoy! Running is awesome.

TheChosenTwo · 11/07/2025 21:46

Sweaty Betty power leggings, very snug fitting side pocket deep enough for a phone and have never felt like they pull the waistband down at all. Also have a tiny zip
pocket at the back for my key.
I don’t take water for under 10k but when I used to do longer runs I would ask a friend to leave a glass of water on her drive for me 😂 or leave a bottle in their bush!

Those are the ones I had. They were great at first but I found they got saggy.

EdenFromTheEast · 11/07/2025 21:54

I am so excited! I really hope I’m good at it. I have no injuries, I’m just fat and haven’t exercised in a while.

NeedToAskPlease · 11/07/2025 21:57

What programme are you going to follow?

Fizbosshoes · 11/07/2025 21:58

I wear shorts for probably 3/4 year, I feel sweaty just thinking about leggings! But I know lots of people do wear them, and prefer them over shorts. I wear sunglasses or a very light cap (it's probably half the weight of a standard baseball cap) if it's sunny.
The annoying thing is I generally wear glasses during the week so if I go out in the evening after work, I have to put a pair of contacts in to enable me to wear sunglasses. ...

EdenFromTheEast · 11/07/2025 21:59

@NeedToAskPlease erm, I don’t have one. Can you recommend one please?
