Hi all, just setting up a second thread - I hope you don’t mind @Jumbojem but the other one was getting a bit close to ending…

Sorry to keep harping on about the weather but it’s still raining up here so instead of running this morning I’m going to get back on my lovely water rowing machine which I’ve neglected totally since starting running back in Jan/Feb. I miss it (and I miss the muscle toning it gave me) so I’m going to get back on this morning for a change.

Might do parkrun tomorrow or a longer run, haven’t yet decided.

Happy new year runners.

Unfortunately for me, I've started the year with a gentle walk following a bout of flu.

Hopefully, I will soon be up and running again.

Jumbojem · 01/01/2026 15:13

Happy New Year runners! About to get out for my first run of the year, Garmin says sprint intervals but I think just a gentle couple of miles today.
Got a trail run with friends planned for Saturday, hopefully followed by a coffee so looking forward to that.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/01/2026 16:25

I've started the new year with a gentle 5mi walk. Injury felt good and I'm finally not shifting my weight placement to avoid irritating it.

Next run planned, Saturday parkrun.

My January goal is to try and re-establish consistency of running habit, and hopefully that should be the foundation for distance and speed goals to follow...

I was getting there through November, so know what's a workable routine to get back to which helps.

I'd like to do an exercise every day streak, but any type so plenty of active recovery too rather than pushing hard.

RunningInto · 01/01/2026 18:54

Hope you feel better soon @xsquared and can build back up again it took DH & I both 3-4wks to feel energised again.

Parkrun for me & it was very very busy! Had a fast one which was great but I preferred the slower chatty one I’d had a couple of weeks ago. I really don’t like feeling under pressure to go fast I just end up overthinking the whole way round instead of enjoying it. Great atmosphere though.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/01/2026 13:17

Lots of parkrun cancellations this morning!

I was already struggling with what day of the week it is!

Standingonlego · 03/01/2026 23:23

So many parkruns done as ran both Saturday's plus Christmas and New Years day 😇 Great atmosphere every time, was so chilly today though!

Fizbosshoes · 03/01/2026 23:50

Our local parkrun was on (and pretty busy!) There is an off road course for when parts of the park are used for other events, it was rock hard and would have been fine for road trainers. Props to all the volunteers, it was baltic

RunningInto · 04/01/2026 11:30

Ours was cancelled after a sprinkle at 7-8am then froze creating an ice rink and was completely the right decision. I’d already decided to go walk dog instead as nursing tight leg & was very relived that DD18 got to work all ok as she left early & it’s a tricky windy country lane drive but she was onto gritted roads when the wintry shower hit. Lots of walking the last 2 weeks & yoga whilst out of usual manic work/school routine not looking forward to Monday when time seems to vanish again.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 04/01/2026 14:45

Our local park run said it was cancelled the night before and then changed its mind at 8am yesterday morning. I hadn’t planned to go anyway as it was dd1s 21st birthday and we had a busy day planned.

well done to all those who made it to a park run or any other run over the weekend.

today I did the hash run that was put on by someone from the running club. It was great fun and dd1 and her boyfriend did it too. After that I went and did another hilly 3.5 miles at a slightly faster place with a friend of mine as needed to get myself back to fitness with hills and stuff!! Lovely bright if pretty freezing day!!

Fizbosshoes · 04/01/2026 15:57

I planned a trail route with a friend, as expecting pavements to be icy but we were lucky, nothing too slippery (in between the trails) i rarely wear gloves as my hands generally warm up pretty quickly.....but not today, 10 miles later my thumbs were numb. Lovely and sunny though.
Friend is marathon training so they did a bit extra, but I was happy to stop at 10!

SFRSmum · 04/01/2026 16:06

Ive been away for a few days, currently in the lake district, en route home

Did park run on new year's day and very chuffed to get 2nd female finisher (small run, 70 people) but still 💪

So its been a fab few days of runs and walks in new places, really enjoyed the runs ive managed to do.

The park run I was going to do was cancelled but I ended up doing a 10k along an incredibly blustery prom and thought it was amazing. 🤣

Home tomorrow, but we are going to stop off at one of my favourite places to run on the way. Nothing special really, an old flat straight railway line, but for some reason I really love running there!

Well done everyone on this weeks runs its been perfect weather for getting out.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 04/01/2026 19:46

I think I may have an issue with buying shoes 🙈. I’ve wanted some carbon plated shoes for a while but couldn’t justify the cost for shoes that wear out so fast. But the Sportsshoes sale has some very good deals and so I have caved and brought myself some Saucony endorphin pro 4s. They’re in the colour way I wanted when I brought myself an endorphin speed 5s but I wasn’t able to get. I didn’t need them, not really, but I appear to have a running shoes addiction 😂😂. Send help! 😂

BogRollBOGOF · 06/01/2026 19:46

I totally don't have an issue with semi-retired running shoes for casual use. Oh no, not at all 😂

The pavements are a mess at the moment so for the purposes of routine, I set my alarm for run o'clock and did a youtube workout that I'd hyperlinked into my calendar ready to cast to the TV.

The forecasts are looking rather ominous for getting my first run of the year started...

tinks3110 · 07/01/2026 18:45

Hi all
i did a new parkrun to me last Saturday, so hilly and so cold 🥶 it felt awful the whole way round but I ran my best parkrun time in over a year 😂
this weather is doing my head in, too icy where we are to get out running and it’s stressing me out

RunningInto · 07/01/2026 19:53

I’m super lucky I ran along low tide beach yesterday lunchtime (wfh) in lovely sunshine nice to run freely after walking the dog earlier on in the morning when the paths were icy slippery even in trail shoes.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/01/2026 17:27

skating walking to work was bad enough this morning. Every inch was covered in a slippery film of black ice.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 08/01/2026 20:53

Hi all, good to see that we're all still going. I've started my marathon training plan, so have been running 4 x a week, although the longest so far has been 8 miles. DS1 and I did Christmas Day parkrun, and DH and I volunteered on NYD. I have done a bit of tourism, including a repeat visit and PB at Belvoir Castle which was absolutely beautiful in the frost. Had some freezing early morning runs while on. holiday on the east coast this week which froze my face off!

BogRollBOGOF · 08/01/2026 21:45

Snow!

Next question... will I be walking to work in the morning...

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/01/2026 07:20

Well done to everyone for getting out in the cold/dark/snow. Not the best weather week for running.

I did 8 miles on Tuesday with the running club and I was going to take my dog on a nice lunch break trail run on Wednesday as it was sunny and not too freezing but stupidly left my work laptop in a colleagues car and so had to spend lunch time retrieving that instead! 🤦‍♀️.

I went to the gym last night and did 5k on the treadmill before a gym class, so at least that was a few more miles even if they were boring treadmill ones.

going to go back to track tonight. First time attempting faster stuff since being injured. Hope it goes ok.

Fizbosshoes · 09/01/2026 13:09

I had 30 minutes easy on my plan last night and the thought was not appealing at all.
However it wasnt icy, so i thought i should...but it was cold, peeing with rain and windy.
With appropriate clothes and a podcast for company it was bearable (it helped it was a relatively short one!)

Is it bad that im hoping the xc race im doing on Sunday is cancelled...?

BogRollBOGOF · 09/01/2026 16:20

I did not walk to work.

I have played on a sledge and shovelled snow though Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 09/01/2026 16:21

This is my most delayed start to running for the year since I started about 12 years ago.

The parkrun cancellations are already coming in.

SFRSmum · 09/01/2026 19:17

Ive had a really pared back week this week. I did over 60km last weekend between walks and runs and Ive really felt it this week
I've been so fatigued, it shocked me.
So ive done small runs (under 10k) and had an extra rest day
I was supposed to do my longest run yet this week but I just couldn't so ive decided on monday im going to do 3 laps of my normal 7km route and set up a pit stop at home for fueling so I dont have to carry anything. Hoping to complete it very slowly, giving myself 3 hours.

Park run tomorrow, unlikely it'll be cancelled, we've had no snow and there hasnt been any rain so I doubt there will be ice.
Was almost hoping there would be so I could test my trail shoes on the ice.

10 days to half marathon too, if its not cancelled. Ive booked a hotel as its a long way away, and perhaps reckless of me, but ive decided to go regardless unless roads are shut and/or trains are cancelled.

Hope the track session went well @Whataninterestinglookingpotato and you managed to remain pain free.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/01/2026 21:26

Hope the snow and ice doesn’t scupper running plans for those who have it for too long!!

you’ve been doing a lot @SFRSmum good that you’re listening to your body and taking it a little easier this week. It’ll probably be beneficial in the long run.

track was good thanks. I did warn the coach before hand that I would be slower than usual and not to shout at me. He more or less managed not to! 😂 it was nice to pick up the pace a bit but knew I couldn’t push it too far. I can still feel the injury when I run but it’s more of a niggly pain now that I can put to one side. I do know that I can’t push the pace as far as usual as I don’t think that would do it any good. My first time keeping up sub 8 min miles though since being injured and I’m happy with that.

just a 10 miler planned for Sunday with my usual running crew. So looking forward to that. Have a good weekend everyone.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/01/2026 09:06

My Garmin is wondering what on earth has happened to me, and my "high aerobic score" is through the floor. I can't think of anything practical other than running that gets my heartrate into that zone to subsitute for running. I find it hard to get my heartrate up. Walking takes powerwalking up a steep hill with a load to reach zone 2, and I struggle to get my heartrate up with videos)

Cycling is also off with the road conditions (Note to self, order new brake cable, but I can ride the DCs' bikes so have bikes to ride)

I've been walking and doing strength though so that's fairly balanced and good for all round health.
