What is it with this fashion? Pulled up white socks!

There’s worse fashions than that, we just need to look at old photos of ourselves!

PollyCreo · 26/04/2025 21:49

It's awful. Girl in the gym today with see through scrunch bum leggings and the socks. I could see her arse cheeks and thong, there was no need.

Scrunch bum leggings…. I am not there for that trend but I love a pulled up sock. Let’s face it trainer socks are so weird! May the pulled up sock trend be here to stay!

Yep I agree. It’s comfortable!

NestOfWipers · 26/04/2025 23:04

I hate the pulled up sock look. Hate it, hate it hate it. I'm less offended by her see-through leggings and thong.

PollyCreo · 26/04/2025 23:16

The sock thing makes me cringe. It's one of those fashions that we'll look back in 10 years and laugh about.

In the 90s I did have a fit arse though, I wore a tight purple unitard at aerobics 😂

BogRollBOGOF · 26/04/2025 23:18

A fashion clearly not devised by someone with 26" legs, size 2 feet and 15" calf muscles.

I have to fold so-called "ankle socks" over to fit. They do not go up my legs.

Awaits the return of slouch socks.

oobedobe · 26/04/2025 23:26

gosh once you start wearing them there is no going back to trainer socks.

I have embraced the shortie ankle (so a bit pulled up but not that high, like 3inches) and also the longer tube sock which i mostly wear under jeans but occasionally pulled up over leggings if it is cold (for exercise not streetwear).

My ankles have had a lovely warm winter and they thank me for it.

I am Gen X if it matters

Wheech · 26/04/2025 23:36

I adore the pulled up sock look. It looks cosy and makes me think of kids from fame or flashdance as it gives leg warmer vibes. I'd be all over it myself if it wasn't for fear of mutton dressed as lamb vibes (gen x).

Don't do that to yourself or to other women. Mutton dressed as lamb is misogynistic.
Embrace the spirit of gen z! Wear what you want.
I love having warm cosy ankles and trainer socks seem so ...millenial 😅
I'm also gen x.

menopausalfart · 27/04/2025 00:03

@Wheech I had a weird 5 mins yesterday where I really wanted to buy a pair of legwarmers. I have no idea where that thought came from.

You're absolutely right of course and especially about my phrasing. My very fashion conscious 11 year old has informed me that it would look fine on me if I did it with black socks. I generally do wear whatever I want and don't care what anyone thinks so maybe I should embrace the sock look!

What do you hate about it? I genuinely can’t see anything to hate at all let alone that warrants the triple hate in your post?!

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 28/04/2025 11:48

I had to explain the pulled up sock fashion movement to my dear, dismayed husband after he'd been on the Adidas website looking for a new pair of 'sannies' and was horrified to find male models looking like the glasgow neds of the 90s 😂

scalt · 28/04/2025 11:52

And people think I’m mad for not wearing socks at all.

I mean shorter socks wouldn't have made any different to how see-through her leggings were?

I like the socks, they are so much more practical and comfortable than trainer style ones! the only thing that annoys me is that I've worn them like that forever, now it looks like I'm trying to be cool. I preferred being thought of as a high sock wearing weirdo than as desperately trying to look 10 years younger via my hosiery.

I'm actually pretty in awe of what lots of gen z wear to the gym - the sensible socks and even the larger women have the body confidence to wear shorts and crop tops and not give a fuck, while I'm sweating away in a big t shirt and leggings. There seem to be two ends of a spectrum - half of them wear as little as possible and the others keep full thick hoodies on with the hoods up 😂

I do agree the long socks look utterly ridiculous with sliders though.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/04/2025 12:08

“Fashion” for women throughout most of my adulthood, has been the least comfortable option. The less practical option. The most expensive option.

This particular fashion for younger women does seem to annoy middle and older women who have always followed fashion trends (if not slavishly, but being “up to date” and making an effort to be stylish), far more than any other, yet it’s a fashion that is more practical and comfortable than the “hidden socks” trend from the 90s onwards.

it’s more sensible to have gym socks cover your ankles if you’ll be exercising outside for warmth. To have socks that fully avoid any part of the trainer rubbing on the skin round the ankle. It’s a really rare fashion trend of being the more sensible option.

andtheworldrollson · 28/04/2025 12:12

Who on earth cares or judges other peoples socks!

it looks odd because it’s unfamiliar that’s all

NestOfWipers · 28/04/2025 12:40

I don't know, I can't really explain it. It's just a reaction I have to pulled up socks they only come halfway up your calf. I don't mind little girls in knee-high socks (I don't particularly like the look and think it's a bit weird for Adult but it's a very 'whatever' feeling).

But there's something about 3/4 that just looks entirely wrong if they're not long, to the knees, then they belong down around the ankles!

💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 28/04/2025 12:44

If you are talking about for exercising, I’m trying to recall what we did before trainer socks - leggings over or under our socks? Or did we just wear leg warmers over the top? I can recall doing some aerobic classes in the 80s in bare feet (no trainers) which I don’t think would be recommended now.

SweetySalt · 28/04/2025 13:40

It just reminds me of school after my Mum bought a multi pack of white sports socks from the market for me to wear. White socks with black trousers was not the thing and I got called Shergar for a year 🙄
Also it’s a bit like that trend when blokes tucked their joggers into their socks to either conceal or give the impression of an ASBO tag.

soundsys · 28/04/2025 13:42

I’m not Gen Z but have fully embraced the sock trend. Soo comfy!

andtheworldrollson · 28/04/2025 14:56

Before trainer socks ( and ever ) I just wear normal ankle socks and my trousers would tend to lie outside of them like any other pair of trousers- I have never got with the skinny leggings look although do have some 3/4 length ones ( because it’s very hard to buy gym wear that fits a female and isn’t skin tight ) which therefore don’t go anywhere near my socks

tbf lots of gen z trends seem to be aimed towards comfort/practicality

trainers with nice dresses to go out rather than stiletto heels, normalising wearing athleisure to almost everywhere, baggy jeans are way more comfortable than skinny ones, etc.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 28/04/2025 15:43

Pulled up socks are great, so comfortable and practical when you're exercising. I mean, how else are sports socks supposed to be worn? Carefully arranged slouch around the ankle? Folded over?
