Qi Gong

I didn't really know where to put this, as it's not specifically exercise but more like a daily practice for body like yoga.

Any one do this? I've just been trying it out as I find yoga bores me and qi gong is a bit more dynamic.

Would love to know if anyone else does it regularly.

I try to do it regularly although I've been a bit rubbish recently. There's a monk I follow on YouTube who I really like. He's very calming. His channel is QigongMeditation and has loads of different types of qigong videos.

rosemole · 10/01/2025 16:53

Thank you, I'll look him up. I've been using YT for videos too.
I really like the energy I get from it, it's like waking up the body in a positive way.

I did it for a while and found it good.

The man who ran it was too chatty for me so I stopped but the actual practice was good.

I think Tai Chi is similar and perhaps more widely available, if you want actual classes.

I'm booked up to a 3 session course, starting soon. I'd never heard of it before, but thought I'd try it. I'll report back.

Please do! Must be fun to do in a group setting.

He's Ok but I prefer old school Jedi's like Ben Kenobi.

HollyGolightly4 · 10/01/2025 21:45

I do it because my yoga teacher is an advocate! Would love online suggestions though

myplace · 10/01/2025 21:47

I do online classes. Thursday morning, 10am

I really enjoy it. Same teacher does Tai chi so I do one class of each a week.

I have a dvd/cd and a book of the Mawangdui but haven’t set that up to follow yet.

menohnopausal · 10/01/2025 21:59

What's the difference between qi gong and tai chi?

myplace · 10/01/2025 22:09

Tai Chi is a martial art training exercise. The moves are performed very slowly to challenge balance and strength , and develop precision. People can have tai chi fights, though they generally don’t. It’s done as exercise it evolved from martial arts training.

Chi Gong is more meditative exercise. So ChiGong tends to be symmetrical, and doesn’t move far, the movements systematically stretch the body.

A ChiGong form tends to involve a step to the right or left, forward or back.

A Tai Chi form can need a fair bit of space as you do a series of moves around a room.

Hmm someone locally is a massive inauthentic con artist and it put me off.

myplace · 10/01/2025 22:19

I’m not keen on the woo stuff. But at the level I do it, it’s helpful.

here’s a QiGong video. I don’t follow on YouTube, but it looks ok at a quick glance. It’s a form I know.

I’m not an expert mind! I just do two classes a week for health reasons. That’s what I understand to be the difference.

LoserWinner · 10/01/2025 22:47

There’s a Falun Gong protest stand close to BBC Broadcasting House. I was walking home very late from a night out earlier this week and there was a lone protester doing XiGong all on his own on an otherwise empty street. It was quite surreal - but that’s London for you!

WhiskersOnKittens2 · 10/01/2025 23:10

I’ve done it on and off. I need a really good teacher so will look up some of the online suggestions.

What is the name of the online one you do please?

myplace · 11/01/2025 23:34

Five bows tai chi. She’s on Facebook.

Flamingoknees · 24/01/2025 21:33

Loving my 3 week course. Unfortunately the venue is not going to do a regular class.
