Walking boots

I am going on a walking weekend at the end of April. I'm a size 18/20, and have a wide fitting in shoes and trainers.

What brands are good for walking boots? And do you prefer boots or shoes?

Whatever I'm going to wear, I need to buy them and get some miles in the bank..

Bonus points for recc of waterproof trousers and jackets! Thank you.

I also have wide feet and high instep and was given the same advice to go to a shop and try lots on. I went to one of those places with lots of outdoor and brands (Mountain Warehouse or something?) and found someone to help me try them. I ended up with a men's pair for the sake of fit and they were great on my 25-miles-a-day hiking holiday, even with little breaking in. Sorry that I can't recall the brand but don't think it was anything special, certainly not the most expensive.

Also, buy some blister tape in case you need it. Apparently great for prevention. And socks are as important as the boots for long hikes.

PS have a good time. Hiking is a lovely thing to do!

You have too try them on. Millets, Blacks, Mountain Warehouse or another outdoor store.
I was impressed with GoOutdoor as at least my local one has a practice "hill" a little ramp for practicing walking on an incline. So you can check the boots don't squash your toes walking down hill or rub going up.
And get decent socks.
Wear them as much as possible before the trip.

I've got wide feet, tried on loads and hands down the best were Meindl. Super comfy from the get go. I love my hiking boots and have walked miles and miles in them.

try the men’s boots if they are in your size too. I ask above women’s sizes so have to buy men’s boots, and they are always too wide for me. They look broadly the same
