Recently joined a new gym and they asked if I wanted to look at my metabolic age. I'm 55 and it said it was 70!!! I'm 5ft 3, weigh 11st (30J boobs don't help!) Size 12/14 and walk 3 times a day over 10k steps. I know I need to up my fitness but that was a shock! Conversely my friend of the same age, 2 stone heavier and off work for 12mths recovering from a brain op had hers checjed at 62. What does it use for calculations?

I think it uses the fat around your organs, visceral fat, as a basis for metabolic age. It can increase insulin resistance and the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Having said that, I’m not sure how accurate the machines are, mine varied by a decade here or there when I used to do it every week!

My visceral fat is in the green so that's definitely odd!

That is weird, maybe it’s a random number generator!

I'd like a better number!

I've been there. Even bought a set of the scales for myself so I could stop feeling ashamed when being weighed at the gym! They base it pretty much all on percentage of body fat (as far as I can tell - since as I lost weight and kept muscle mass while losing body fat my age went downwards). They are not at all accurate, however, and are only really useful to measure a long term trend IF you can use them under the same conditions each time. Another reason why I bought them to have at home so I could weigh undressed first thing in the morning.

Might include body fat %, bmi, heart rate, actual age, lean body mass %
