Joe Wicks Strength in Menopause

Americano75 · 16/07/2024 12:19

Has anyone been following the JWSIM plan? I've been doing the two free workouts that he's shared on YouTube and love them, so I just signed up for the free trial on the app to see the whole plan but swithering about committing to it.

Any advice?

I like Joe Wicks but what does he know about menopause? I don't think you need specific exercises for it!

Pops1985 · 16/07/2024 12:42

I also love the two on YouTube, let us know how you get on with the app. I would consider signing up.

You do - but they are also for old age in general. I expect there’s a focus on weight training to minimise osteoporosis. Core strength training to maintain stability and reduce the chance of falls. Etc.

There is lots of emerging research about how we should exercise in menopause.

I don't have any issue with Joe Wicks using this research to design workout programs for menopausal women. So what if he didn't do the research himself?

He knows a fair bit about strength training, which is what I want and need to focus on right now, as a peri menopausal woman. Joe is also one of the expert contributors in Dr Louise Newson’s book, The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause which I think is a pretty significant endorsement.

And as I said in my OP, I tried the two workouts he's offered for free and really liked them.

I'm hoping someone else has been following the plan, I'm not sure how best to!

I am bombarded on social media with adverts about "special exercises for women in menopause". And "special diets". Also "special X" by age group. It's hilarious. they all follow the same business model, intriguing picture followed by long website forms trying to get me to sign up to some subscription lifestyle programme. All feel irrelevant to me & my lifestyle. They completely don't understand me or my interests.

I bet JWks programme is better than most, though.

Americano75 · 20/07/2024 16:12

Just to update, the plan seems really good but I can't really justify £80 for 10 workouts!

There does seem to be a bit of a menopause bandwagon that a lot of businesses have jumped on just lately, I agree.

Americano75 · 20/07/2024 16:39

I would normally agree with the 'bandwagon' thing, but when it comes to menopause I'm keeping a very open mind. Anything that's worth a look I'm going to look at.

He can't endorse it personally can so it's a no from me🤣

Monkeybutt1 · 21/07/2024 08:00

You don't need special exercises post menopause you just need to exercise regularly and incorporate strength training

Thegreatgiginthesky · 21/07/2024 08:04

Just do the Caroline Girvan iron programme. That is completely free and great for all stages of life including menopause.

TroysMammy · 21/07/2024 08:11

I follow (but not necessarily action) Petra Genco on Facebook and Youtube. She is a menopausal woman who doesn't have the celebrity of Joe Wicks. I think her methods are simple and easy to follow.

This. He's jumping on a bandwagon and putting himself forward as an expert in something he knows fuck all about to make some cash. Again.

I can’t recommend Dr Wendy Sweet highly enough. She has spent years studying menopause and women’s healthy ageing.

myotherdogisadonkey · 26/07/2024 09:57

I have done the first JW's Meno one twice .Enjoyed it. I am quite new to exercise after being a slob for ages. Used to go to the gym when younger but got ill and fat and you know...
Also have done some Lucy Wydham Hall ones and liked them. Yeah meno seems a new thing now but at least folk are mentioning it ! I just want to get fitter and stronger! Will try the suggestions mentioned by pps too!

myotherdogisadonkey · 26/07/2024 09:59

I can't afford to subscribe either OP!

Americano75 · 26/07/2024 10:50

Yeah, I'm going back to Hasfit and will maybe fit in the two free JW ones, they are really good. The app plan is definitely not worth the money!

GrandHighPoohbah · 26/07/2024 10:55

I have done the two free ones on his YouTube channel and found them quite good. I don't object to things being labelled as menopause, it's just a helpful way of signposting people to low impact strength workouts or similar. But you can just look for exactly that rather than having to pay for the programme. The two free ones give an idea of the exercises.

I came on the thread to say this. Caroline Girvans work outs are great. You don’t need to match her weights. She has about 3 years worth of free workouts so you won’t get bored.

parkrun500club · 26/07/2024 17:01

The Own Your Menopause app might be worth a look. If you buy the related book, you get free access to part of the app for a year, so whatever the book costs (I think I paid £7.99 for it). The wider app is a lot more expensive but the book-related programmes might be all you need.
