Tingly face after running

Reposting as I didn't get many replies in my other thread.

I've started running this week. I haven't ran since school age! Today I ran 1.7 km. After I ran, my face started to feel tingly. It went away after I cool down. My face was beetroot red!

Is this normal? Am I just unfit?

I should think it’s just the increased blood flow to your face and the nerves and hopefully will settle down as your body gets use to it.

Obviously if you have other symptoms such as numbness in your face, headaches or vision problems then that’s a GP appointment.

Nets888 · 05/07/2024 16:46

No other symptoms apart from feeling tingly.

Maybe hyperventilation

Nets888 · 05/07/2024 16:51

@RomanRoysSearchHistory you meant I was not breathing correctly?

Yes, that was my first thought. I'm asthmatic and tend towards hyperinflation of lungs and over-breathing when exercising, can sometimes get tingly face and fingers as a result.

Increased blood flow to your face, sweating and warmth. It’s a fairly common reaction, and a well known trigger for rosacea, a rash - technically a form of acne, but different from the teenage sort - which is quite common in perimenopause due to hormone fluctuations.

Make sure your post-workout shower isn’t too hot and don’t use anything too harsh on your face. Other than that, it’s nothing to worry about and should ease off as you get fitter.

@BreakfastAtMilliways that's reassuring to hear. I'm in my 50s, a bit late to start running.

@BreakfastAtMilliways is tingling in face also due to me not breathing correctly? I was breathing through my mouth.

Probably not. It’s difficult to breathe ‘correctly’ anyway if you’ve only just started running and you’re out of breath. Give it a few weeks of consistent effort and improved fitness, and this may well settle down.

Nets888 · 05/07/2024 18:41

@RomanRoysSearchHistory how long does your tingly face usually last? After you cool down?

Sorry @BreakfastAtMilliways , I've just reread your posts. Did you mean tingly face is a common reaction or rosacea is a common reaction? Sorry to be dumb.

Totally recommend couch to 5k NHS running app

Nets888 · 05/07/2024 21:09

@Gerkinsandwich thanks. I will check it out.

Tingly face. (It may trigger rosacea if you’re prone to it.)
