People who say that exercise is boring

People who say that exercise is "too boring": my prejudice is to guess is they spend a lot of time watching tv or scrolling social media or watching paint dry... Things I would find too boring. I'm wrong, right? Tell me about how you find exercise "too boring" and what purposeful or constructive activities you are doing instead with the same time you could have exercised.

Or maybe "too boring" actually means "too tiring and I need brain dead time instead" (xx) which I could completely understand needing. But too tiring is not what some posters say. They specifically say "boring."

(xx) or some other thing that doesn't mean too boring but people choose the wrong words.

How do you block out music when you're working? Isn't it hugely distracting?

I don't know how. It's weird. It's like a separate part of my brain is happy & the thinking part can crack on.

I have learned from this thread that "boring" means a million other words that MNers don't bother to say. Maybe instead of "boring", the accurate phrase would be "I don't like it".

I get super confused when MNers use a word completely beyond & away & outside the dictionary definition. I long ago encountered this about MNers & the word "normal" and yet I suppose I'll never be able to spot when it's happening, lol.

You seem to be confused about a lot. I wonder how that works out in the world for you. I feel you are being disingenuous. I'm nor sure you are confused. What you actually seem toeam is I have trouble understanding experiences and opinions that aren't my own. Which seems to be common. But I think where I find it a problem is when people frame that as an issue with others. Rather than say I lack basic understanding and empathy they make it an issue which sits with the other person / people.

I do also find it wild that either way and regardless of other's replied you feel people should justify their lifestyles to you. You do understand this is normal don't you? (in and meaning of the word)

Devilshands · 24/03/2024 14:48

I guess it depends how much you exercise.

I do 2-3 hours every day. I find it boring as hell. I imagine anyone would. Three hours exercising (swimming/running/cycling) IS boring after a while. So I listen to music. But if I only did an hour? I’d probably not be bored.

I exercise 3 times a week and I hate it and find it boring. I have tried loads of different types to see what I like and the upshot is nothing. To me it is on a par with washing up. Boring but needs to be done.

Keep trying different things. You’ll find your one.

SwordToFlamethrower · 24/03/2024 14:51

I hate the gym floor. Mind numbingly boring.

I love classes and I do that 4 times a week.

2 yoga, 2 body combat.

In the 12 weeks I've been going, my strength, bone density and fitness has increased exponentially.

Body shape has changed too, all good stuff.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/03/2024 14:54

Long distance walker. Next Marathon in September. Where we currently live is very boring indeed, so training is boring. Will be much more enjoyable when we move soon.

Hardly sit down during the day. Hour or 2 TV at night at most.

GanninHyem · 24/03/2024 14:56

God the "I'm so.much better than you plebs" vibes oozing out of you is palpable. You adore exercise, you adore the outdoors and scenery while running, you despise scrolling, you don't need music to fill a void..
What else are you sooooooo much better than us brain dead hicks at? I could name one thing but it would get me banned no doubt.

bluecomputerscreen · 24/03/2024 15:02

I don't enjoy exercise. it's boring and hard.
but I really enjoy the feeling of achievement after I'm finished.
plus feeling strong and flexible. long may it last.

good headphones & interesting podcasts or music make it less tedious.

Spudlet · 24/03/2024 15:22

Maybe rather than making others feel judged, you should focus a bit harder on your own workout.

The best and most effective exercise is the one you enjoy - because then you’ll actually do it. If that means sticking some headphones in and some music on - excellent. Do that. Anything that helps you to show up consistently is worth doing. Personally, I like to listen to CPD podcasts in the gym because it makes it feel doubly productive, but I don’t listen to anything while running because I like to be able to hear my surroundings. If others prefer different things, then great. I’ll be there, cheering them on all the way.

Mistymist · 24/03/2024 15:27

So it's ok for you to listen to music while working, but not for others while running. Great logic you have!
And you criticising others for their choice of spending their freetime is ok also. What is wrong with watching paint dry, playing games or watching trash tv? Are we all lesser humans? I enjoy all this crap aaaaand sometimes I do run or exercise! Can you believe it?
Now go get you medal!

fluffycloudalert · 24/03/2024 15:31

It is rather boring listening to people who bang on and on about 'exercise', if you ask me. There are plenty of physical activities to engage in that aren't an end in themselves, and are just as rewarding in their own way.

Dontcallmescarface · 24/03/2024 15:44

Maybe instead of "boring", the accurate phrase would be "I don't like it".

Nope, the accurate phrase is "boring".

Definition of boring "not interesting or exciting" which sums up my opinion of exercise.:

UnimaginableWindBird · 24/03/2024 15:46

It depends what sort of exercise it is. Dancing or playing a sport you enjoy is generally inherently fun. Some group exercise activities are fun, not because of the activity itself but because of the social aspect - I used to do CrossFit and while the exercise itself was stuff I would have found tedious to do alone, the camaraderie (and supportive yet competitive atmosphere made it fun. I can see why other people would find rowing and running boring, but I find the rhythmic repetitive nature of them meditative, and sprinting is exhilarating. But I get none of that while lifting weights or doing bodyweight exercises. I find them incredibly boring, and could only get through them while listening to very exciting podcasts, but now I've run out of podcasts which are exciting enough to balance out the tedium of lifting heaving things repeatedly with little breaks in between, so am exercising less.

Librarybooker · 24/03/2024 15:50

Gym exercise is boring and generally involves wearing stuff I prefer not to.

I’m very asthmatic so running isn’t my thing. I like cycling and walking and climbing. Indoor climbing and swimming are also ok for me.

Re watching tv/streaming being boring - it’s only boring if you are watching something you don’t like. I don’t do that, I suppose some people might do.

Moonwatcher1234 · 24/03/2024 15:54

I don’t enjoy exercising either but desperately need to. Clearly a divide between those who enjoy it and those who see it as a chore. Would be interested in any tips as to how to actually learn to like it a bit more.

FrancisSeaton · 24/03/2024 16:00

Yay go you 🥇

MenoBabe · 24/03/2024 16:10

I find it very tedious but I do it for my health.

Exactly. Boring to me means not interesting or tedious. Which sums up exercise and the OPs judgemental view of people who, fortunately for them and the rest of us, , aren’t like her ;)

What are you talking about? Post after post after post on this thread has said that they do indeed find it boring. Dictionary definition "boring".

Plenty of people force themselves to exercise despite finding it dull, boring, monotonous, tedious. They may like the effects of exercising and see it as a necessity but find it just as boring as completing a tax return.

It's truly bizarre that you can't comprehend a fairly common attitude towards exercising. Millions of people find it boring and have to force themselves to do it. This is not breaking news.

God knows what you're tying yourself in knots over.

You feel good about yourself because you don't find it boring 🤷🏻‍♀️ bizarre thing to be proud about. I'd argue I've more to feel proud about than you do as I find it boring but push myself to do it anyway. Theres achievement in pushing past the boredom.

itsatail · 24/03/2024 16:38

I enjoy scrolling on my phone and watching tv and exercise. So there

Fizbosshoes · 24/03/2024 16:55

Sometimes I do a hiit workout while I'm watching a TV show...where does that fit in?

MothersofGorgons · 24/03/2024 16:57

I read a lot. Almost 2 books a week. I listen to podcasts and music. I don't exercise, but I do walk a lot listening to those. I go to the theatre, gigs and music.

AdultFemaleWoman · 24/03/2024 17:07

I was going to reply, but your post was too boring...

PanadTe · 24/03/2024 17:12

I hate exercising for fitness/exercising sake. To me the fitness is a by product from the sports I love…. Fell Running, mountain biking, rock climbing, mountain walking, canoeing, surfing. I’m lucky I live where I live.

I’ve tried going to the gym because I know it’ll improve my performance mentioned sports, but it’s so…… boring!!!!🥱

Mathsbabe · 24/03/2024 17:17

I love being in the pool. I do aqua, which I love and don't find at all boring. After aqua I try and stay and do over an hours swim, usually in the outdoor pool, which is awesome. After that is the sauna and shower and home. I love the lot.

DeeCeeCherry · 24/03/2024 17:24

Exercise is boring. So are people who bang on about it. I exercise regularly because its necessary to my health. I make time for it just as I would any other chore - to me, it IS a chore.

Youve worded your post in a really need/demand to know style, and said nothing about your exercise routine. Are you a journo? Or the poster who put up the 'useless degrees' post recently? Same vibe
