People who say that exercise is boring

People who say that exercise is "too boring": my prejudice is to guess is they spend a lot of time watching tv or scrolling social media or watching paint dry... Things I would find too boring. I'm wrong, right? Tell me about how you find exercise "too boring" and what purposeful or constructive activities you are doing instead with the same time you could have exercised.

Or maybe "too boring" actually means "too tiring and I need brain dead time instead" (xx) which I could completely understand needing. But too tiring is not what some posters say. They specifically say "boring."

(xx) or some other thing that doesn't mean too boring but people choose the wrong words.

You have a very narrow view of the world if you think life is either exercise or TV.
I go to the gym but hate it. It's a chore. I try to make sure I have a good podcast or something to occupy/distract me.
I prefer reading, crafting, cooking, socialising and just about any other hobby.
I watch very little TV.

colouredball · 24/03/2024 09:44

I find it boring because my mind isn't active. I don't do anything constructive or purposeful instead though, so feel free to judge.

Exercise is boring because all I can do is limited by disabilities. I do put headphones in to try to make it more interesting by listening to a podcast.

I do my PhD research instead.

PhD research....brain dead time apparently.

All those reality TV stars exercising excessively so they can look good on insta are apparently much more cerebral than you who is just sitting around doing a PhD 😂

lokudwa · 24/03/2024 09:45

Exercise (outside of team sport) is really boring, and yes I like watching TV, judge away OP, I'm slim, fit and healthy because I do it anyway because I'm intelligent enough to understand the importance, but stupid enough to not be entertained by it apparently, according to you.

Tv is not boring is it? If you like the programme it's stimulating.
I listen to podcasts while I exercise because exercise is boring and podcasts a little less so.

Wasteddaysanddays · 24/03/2024 09:46

I swim and I love my swimming compatible headphones. I resurrected my ITunes account and Downloaded the music on there.
I know I swim and sing, I just hope I am not too loud.
Now and again, if life is exploding I will have a silent swim while I think. Other than that it is so boring.

BeaRF75 · 24/03/2024 09:46

It is deathly boring to me. Reading a good book or watching a play or looking at art engages my brain in a way that exercise never could. We are not all the same, OP, so don't assume that the alternative is just scrolling on a phone.

Victory2004 · 24/03/2024 09:46

I find it boring. I can think of loads of things I'd rather do before exercise so I never do it! I'll clean the house, walk to the shops, read a book, do some life admin/work, sort out the garden etc. but exercising just for the point of exercising is boring! I'd never go for a run or to the gym for example.

Apparently so @Comedycook who'da thunk it.

it's not a lot of fun rapidly descending into a wheelchair and pardon me for deciding that I'm doing my best.

Also tit about on mumsnet but apparently the op doesn't do that either.

OverTheCountryClub · 24/03/2024 09:47

Because it is boring??? What mental stimulation does it require? Like housework. It's tiring and necessary but ultimately boring. You do the same things over and over again, knowing that even though you'd far rather be doing literally anything else, you have to keep doing it again and again until you die. The ultimate boring activity.
As for my preferred activities- reading, music, crafting, socialising, travelling....I watch very little TV. Sorry!

Comedycook · 24/03/2024 09:47

But this is just the latest middle class obsession to feel superior to other people. Exercising and obsessively avoiding upfs....

These boards are full of it

It's so fucking tedious

Iheartmysmart · 24/03/2024 09:47

Depends what exercise it is. I can walk for hours and not get bored but a gym would be my idea of hell. I’m uncoordinated and can’t swim which makes a lot of things impossible for me but I love horse riding and enjoy the occasional fitness DVD or Pilates class.

One of my friends is obsessed with exercise and she is as dull as fuck. Always droning on about personal bests, her trainer and protein and veg diet.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 24/03/2024 09:48

Exercise is boring. However, I've changed my mindset and instead of saying 'exercise is boring' I just do it and use it to have 30 minutes of blank mindspace. I swim 4x a week and just have some time in the morning just going up and down letting thoughts go in and out of my mind. I also do yoga and a Zumba class, which I don't find boring!

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 24/03/2024 09:50

Exercise is boring. I prefer doing crack. And Tik Tok, obviously.

Yep.

Please forgive my use of the term "sitting around" by the way. I meant it colloquially not in reference to your wheelchair. 😊

exerciseshmexercise · 24/03/2024 09:52

This post is so judgmental.

I have to meet deadlines for my PhD. Sometimes I can't do anything else because I'm in a hyperfocus zone and writing so I do my research instead of cleaning or showering or getting dressed or ANYTHING else because in that moment everything else is more boring than my research hyperfocus.

I also don't owe ANYONE an explanation of my disabilities so sometimes I lie and say boring when I mean something else. Why the hell is anyone owed an explanation?

Dillydollydingdong · 24/03/2024 09:52

Latest report I was reading during the week said that so long as you do 5000 steps three times a week, that's quite enough exercise to keep you healthy. So I go out almost every day for a walk round the shops and that's enough! I don't like formal exercise. That IS boring. But I've never believed in it anyway! I like walking round the shops!

Fizbosshoes · 24/03/2024 09:52

I went to a netball class a couple of years ago. It wasn't boring but I couldn't wait for it to be over because I was so shit at it! I had to concentrate (on trying not to be crap!) But it was awful and demoralising and reminded why I hated PE at school!
I like other forms of exercise - boot camp, hiit, running (although i concede that can be boring) walks in the country

KeepingItUnderTheRadar · 24/03/2024 09:53

'Exercise' is not one universal thing though is it?

People who think exercise only = an hour at a gym, staring at a wall whilst pounding away on machines with other gym bunnies - I think those people are boring tbh. How monumentally narrow minded.

Causewerethespecialtwo · 24/03/2024 09:53

Newsflash - all people have different likes, dislikes, interests.

I love sewing, crafting, painting, reading. I also know that lots of people find all of these dull and boring. I don’t look down on them because they don’t enjoy the same things as me.

I also go to the gym 4 times a week. I find it boring and I don’t enjoy it. I do it purely because I know it’s good for my health. If I could wave a magic wand and maintain excellent health without any exercise, then I would never do it again. I understand that many people love exercise and thats great for them.

Divebar2021 · 24/03/2024 09:55

What do you mean by exercise? Lifting weights? CrossFit? Yes those are boring to me and people who bang on about them are boring too. I swim outside, play tennis and walk my dog which are all forms of exercise that I find more interesting than running on a treadmill or lifting weights. Other than that I go to gigs, art galleries, theatre, read books & see my friends.

toastofthetown · 24/03/2024 09:57

I find most exercise quite boring. Running, swimming, weights, gym exercise don’t interest my brain at all. For me it’s dull and repetitive, and feels fairly purposeless and thoroughly unstimulating for my brain. I like yoga, and walking, but there I have a podcast and interesting things to look at and dogs to spot! I love my ice skating lessons but they aren’t really vigorous exercise. What would I rather be doing? Reading, jigsaw puzzles, cooking, baking, reading recipes, hanging out with friends/family, browsing Reddit/Mumsnet (which it seems you are also partial to), playing board games/cards/ video games. Other people might find that boring and prefer the exercise I don’t enjoy, but as I learnt in a school assembly when I was about seven, different people enjoy different things and that’s a good thing as diversity is good and the world needs all kinds of people.

spriots · 24/03/2024 09:57

How I spend my time:

Work
Parenting
Reading
Talking to my husband
Socialising
Volunteering
Going to the theatre
Life admin
Housework
I get perhaps an hour a week on the sofa watching TV

Some of those are boring but have to be done. Exercise is in that category for me too.

What do you find interesting about exercise?

EveSix · 24/03/2024 10:07

Ah, but it can be a bit... samey.
I've always exercised and found different types of exercise to suit my circumstances. To be fair, I rarely find anything boring, but I can see that for some, exercise could easily fall into this category.
Exercise I have found most engaging over the years has included:
Cycling
Walking
Dance
Yoga
Badminton

You sound as if you're making lots of assumptions about the reasons why people may choose not to exercise. You do you ‐it's lovely you are able to find it so fulfilling.
