People who say that exercise is boring

People who say that exercise is "too boring": my prejudice is to guess is they spend a lot of time watching tv or scrolling social media or watching paint dry... Things I would find too boring. I'm wrong, right? Tell me about how you find exercise "too boring" and what purposeful or constructive activities you are doing instead with the same time you could have exercised.

Or maybe "too boring" actually means "too tiring and I need brain dead time instead" (xx) which I could completely understand needing. But too tiring is not what some posters say. They specifically say "boring."

(xx) or some other thing that doesn't mean too boring but people choose the wrong words.

I love exercising. Running, lifting weights or the machines at the gym, hiking, dancing, yoga, Pilates etc but I get bored sometimes. It’s ok to be bored!

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 24/03/2024 13:17

I could be outside getting cold whilst my feet get hurt and throat gets sore from panting as I try to run, or I could be in bed in the warm with a book.

It's a no-brainer to stay in.

chuggachug · 24/03/2024 13:27

@Gwenhwyfar then don't jog. There are a load of other forms of exercise you know. Or put on a podcast. Even an educational one

I mentioned that I do listen to podcasts while I job because otherwise it's too boring.
While not great, jogging is probably the 'least worst' for me.

anonymous98 · 24/03/2024 13:33

It is boring. Even when I was at my very fittest, I found going to the gym a chore. The only exercise I've ever really enjoyed is ice skating, and I can't afford to do that right now.

lljkk · 24/03/2024 11:06

why does it matter to you

Actually I'm also intrigued why some people can only go running if they have music or podcasts to listen to. Why is someone like me content enough with my own thoughts and the outside views while running, while others find themselves bored witless without the music in their ears. I wouldn't listen at all if I tried to run with music in my ears.

That said, I have become reliant on listening to music while at work; it makes me more productive. And I don't know why, I used to work in silence perfectly easily. Something about dopamine receptors changed, but only in that context for me.

Swimming lengths can be boring for sure but it doesn't take too long so I can stomach that boredom. And I'm lucky to get a great high after swimming.

I know people who spend huge amounts of time gaming, scrolling or watching TV, these are common pasttimes. Not because of disability or tired out from rest of life, just out of habit. I don't think anyone on MN would say that there exists no one who ever wastes too much time gaming, time they could have spent much more productively in some other way....

(or maybe I'm the only parent of teenagers on MN, possibly)

How do you block out music when you're working? Isn't it hugely distracting? I prefer to work in silence to aid concentration.

Similarly, I prefer to exercise with some form of music or podcast on precisely because I'm not having to use my brain to exercise, which is what makes it boring.

However, if I'm playing a competitive sport, suddenly the boredom falls away as strategy kicks in.

broccolienthusiast · 24/03/2024 13:50

I don't find exercising boring but I love working out to the point of complete exhaustion. You can't be bored when you're too tired to think

Prejudiced seems like the right word. Perhaps judgemental? Maybe narrow minded 😂

I have a couple of PT session a week, at an hour each, and generally one class. It is boring, but one of those things that have to be done. Anyone who couldn’t really find something better to do than exercise if they tried isn’t really thinking big enough!

Also, looking after mental wellbeing is as, if not more, important at though I recognise for some exercise is the answer to both :)

As I don’t have a TV the time saved wouldn’t be spent on that, but I would be able to go to the theatre more often - the class finishes at 6:30 which means having a light supper with friends before the theatre isn’t possible. sometimes I do skip the class if it’s something I’ll really want to see.

Other uses for the time would be helping out at the food bank (also closes at 6), charity fund raising, helping out at the local hospice or providing support to elderly neighbours with gardening, shopping or light chores ;)

ChristmasFluff · 24/03/2024 13:52

If you haven't found 'your' exercise, it IS boring - I find all forms of gym equipment boring, and playing all traditional UK team sports boring.

I speak as someone who loves exercise and who exercises most days. I love HIIT, aerobics, weght lifting (free weights, not machines), dance, walking, running, yoga and swimming in the sea (cannot abide swimming in a pool - it's BORING!). I also enjoy volleyball, squash and badminton

Other people might love the treadmill and cross-trainer, and find my activities very boring - and if your passion happens to be racquet sports or ball games rather than running, it can be harder to find a time to do it due to needing others.

I don't see what's so hard to understand about that. People find different things boring. I do however beieve that there's at least one form of exercise for everyone that they will completely love once they find it.

lljkk · 24/03/2024 13:53

I don't know how. It's weird. It's like a separate part of my brain is happy & the thinking part can crack on.

I have learned from this thread that "boring" means a million other words that MNers don't bother to say. Maybe instead of "boring", the accurate phrase would be "I don't like it".

I get super confused when MNers use a word completely beyond & away & outside the dictionary definition. I long ago encountered this about MNers & the word "normal" and yet I suppose I'll never be able to spot when it's happening, lol.

I listen to music when I'm out for a brisk walk. A bit of Slipknot and Metallica really gets that heart rate up 😆

OxoCubeEnthusiast · 24/03/2024 13:54

I find it mind numbingly boring.

But then I also rarely watch TV or use social media. Most of my time is spent reading, cooking, painting and sculpting. All things that are 100% more interesting than exercising!

That's not to say I don't exercise. I do, but I see it as a chore like emptying the bins or doing laundry.

DinaofCloud9 · 24/03/2024 14:01

Do you not crave mental stimulation at all op?

EveryKneeShallBow · 24/03/2024 14:01

Go on then, how are we using the word’boring’ in a way “completely beyond & away & outside the dictionary definition.”

I’m confused by how you’re confused by people saying. “I find exercising boring.”

RainingCatsandfrogs · 24/03/2024 14:01

I have a physical job and always on the go, l don't think about exercise.
I'm lucky with my genes, tall and slim, I'm in my 50s and never put on weight.
I don't own a car, or tv, that helps.

EveryKneeShallBow · 24/03/2024 14:04

“Maybe instead of "boring", the accurate phrase would be "I don't like it".”

Nope. I find exercise boring. That is accurately what I mean. No other word describes my feelings about exercise. I’m bored when I’m exercising.

Is English not your first language?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/03/2024 14:06

Definitely not a case of “I don’t like” otherwise I wouldn’t do the job I do or walk to get shopping etc - I would use the car and have a desk job!
Exercise for its own sake is god damn mind numbing boring.

Flopsy145 · 24/03/2024 14:08

I think the people who find it boring aren't mixing it up enough and maybe not doing things right so they're not seeing results and they find it all a bit pointless. I struggle to find the time will pregnant, working full time and looking after a toddler so I do what I can and thoroughly enjoy the time to just do something for me, if I didn't work and had all the money I needed I would be in the gym everyday doing a variety of things 😂

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/03/2024 14:09

It’s a bit like housework to me. A chore but the rewards are good and make it worth it. Like sometimes you can’t be bothered to have sex but when you do it makes you feel so good you want to do it again until you leave it too long to remember how good it is 😆

I love exercise. I used to windsurf and sail and horseride and mountain bike and climb and and and and

Boring is for things like running, walking, repetitive stuff at the gym.

I walk with music and/or podcasts so that the separate part of my brain is happy & the walking part can crack on. I'm not using the word boring outside the dictionary definition.

I can't do it anymore - exercise that is - because I'm disabled. It's not because I don't like it - it's because I can't.

I owe not one single person any explanation as to why I no longer exercise.

You are completely ignoring my posts - is there a particular reason for that?

Elebag · 24/03/2024 14:12

It is mostly boring. Like flossing your teeth and drinking plenty of water.
It all pays off over the decades though.

lokudwa · 24/03/2024 14:17

It must be incredibly frustrating for you to be surrounded by such inferiority.

The dictionary definition of boring is literally tedious/not interesting. Which is how a lot of people feel about exercising.

0sm0nthus · 24/03/2024 14:28

Washing up is a good opportunity to listen to something interesting on the radio or a podcast.
The same is true for most forms of exercise, although I do enjoy exercise.
I also enjoy the high that I get after things like running and swimming, it's like a mild version of cocaine for me.

0sm0nthus · 24/03/2024 14:31

@lljkk but why do you care about whether other people exercise?
The way I look at it the more other people are fat and out of shape the better I look by comparison 🤷🏼‍♀️
