Online pilates recommendations?

Northernlights1992 · 15/01/2024 21:29

I am currently 4 weeks post discectomy surgery , and my surgeon has suggested I could start with some pilates workouts as I am not allowed to do any extreme exercise for 6 months

I am hoping to be able to tone my legs again, due to my sciatica before surgery my left leg is extremely weak

I have done pilates before, but I am hoping to get some good recommendations for online videos. Unfortunately I don't have time to attend classes at the moment , but would love some online videos to get me started
.

Thank you

Unless you are very experienced already, I would be very careful about post-surgery Pilates without a real life trainer supervising.

Could you do at least a couple of in-person sessions with a trainer to ensure that you are doing the exercises with the correct form? The trainer could then put together a proper rehab program for you to work on at home. I see so many people in Pilates classes doing exercises with terrible form (and that’s with a trainer correcting them) and I would worry that you could exacerbate any issues by trying to exercise on your own.

Sorry if the above comes off as patronizing or nitpicky (not intended that way) - really hope you have a swift recovery!

I love Winsor Pilates by Mari Winsor. I have a reformer in my home and have done many different workouts with many coaches and I still go back to the original 20 minute workout all the time. She has a video on how to do them and a basic 20 minute video to start plus many others. Just double check with your doctor that it is okay to try. My doctor recommended them to me as pilates were invented by Jospeh Pilates to help injured soldiers recover from injuries. They have done wonders helping me maintain strength and flexibility.

Claire Louise Pilates £9.99 per month (stop anytime) for access to a large catalogue of videos.

Jessica Valant but I've been doing classes for the past 10-15 years so have a good grounding with it. Would VERY much recommend some face to face classes if you have no pilates experience.

@DonnasShrugaleros I do have experience with pilates . Have been working out for many years , but do to my back issue I had to stop for a while. Was just looking for some recommendations for online videos rather than attending classes as with 2 younch children as well as working I simply do not get time anymore so go to classed. My husband had a gym in out garage but obviously i am not allowed to do any weights etc for 6 months

I would recommend a one to one with a post spinal surgery instructor before attempting any online Pilates. It is so important to be properly aligned, especially so after surgery. A lot of instructors are hybrid now, so you may well find someone who can start you off IRL and then take online classes with them. Look for BCP or Stott practitioners.

I second Jessica Valant. She's also a physio and has some good routines for backs.
