do they actually do something apart from making you feel fat with all the wobble ?

DH has had one under the sofa for the last 3 years. So not in my experience 🤣

there is one in the holiday cottage we are staying at. it's weirdly satisfying.
my parents (over 75) want one. so we dc are considering getting them one.

A massage gun is probably cheaper, simpler and a lot more portable, assuming you mean one of the vibration plate exercise machines.

I have one and have been using it for nearly a year now. I use it 3 times a week to help with my weight training. I find it really good as I'm pretty lazy so it makes it easier to work out.
They are pretty expensive if you aren't going to use it though!
