Men in tights (or not!)

madeinmanc · 12/12/2023 07:14

Have you noticed how at this time of year almost all women runners are wearing full-length tights but men hardly ever are?

Even the other week in the freezing cold weather, I passed my neighbour who is at least 70 with hardly any body fat (very active) running in shorts in the literal snow!

Is it an ego thing? 🤔

Maybe testosterone keeps you warmer.

What is egocentric about running without tights in the cold? Confused

Men run hotter don't they? Pardon the pun 😂 Thats the whole issue with office temperatures.

I prefer 3/4 length as I get too hot in full length. And I hate the cold.

Yes it might be a bit cold getting out there but once warmed up its more pleasant than being too hot.

Anawi · 12/12/2023 09:27

When I run in full length leggings, I usually get about 5 mins in, then wish I was wearing shorter leggings or shorts 😆 I might learn one day.

educatingrati · 12/12/2023 11:14

Ds runs in shorts, he hates the feel of wet/ muddy clothing next to his skin, he much prefers getting caked in mud and then leaping in the shower (whilst I sit on my hands desperately wanting to put newspaper down whilst trying not to wince at the mud fiend entering the house!).
I'm the opposite and prefer mud on clothing to my skin, but then I also know I won't be able to leap in a shower straight after a run.

DH does not run, but he has loads of pairs thermal long johns and he has been wearing these under his trousers to go out for a couple of weeks.

Ablondiebutagoody · 12/12/2023 11:26

But after 2 minutes of running you are hot whatever you are wearing. Be bold, start cold.

When I saw the title I thought this thread was going to give me unwelcome mental images of budgie smugglers but even though it doesn't mention that aspect, I have the images anyway! Help!

I hate tights and leggings - it’s shorts all the way for me!

BIWI · 12/12/2023 11:32

DH runs 6 days out of 7. (Way too much, actually). He's out there now - in a short-sleeved t-shirt and shorts. In the rain, thunder and lightning.

I know it must be really cold if he wears a top layer and his gloves.

He doesn't even own a pair of running tights!

Redcrayons · 12/12/2023 11:35

I run a lot so know lots of male and female runners. It’s not an ego thing at all, they just get too hot. There’s plenty of women turn up in shorts and vests at this time of year.

I'm not, not at all.

Oh well, I'm not complaining 😉

I’ve seen a man in tights and I can see the issue

xsquared · 13/12/2023 08:41

DH runs in the same outfit all year. T shirt and shorts.
If it's freezing, wet and windy, he'll put his running jacket on.
Absolutely nothing to do with ego.

Simonjt · 13/12/2023 08:46

I hate running leggings/tights, I am cold in shorts, but I’d rather that as I dry quicker etc and it reduces the washing when its muddy out. When its really cold (we live in Sweden) I find (so far anyway) that if I’m wearing decent layers on top and something windproof I do stay warm enough in shorts.

Whataretheodds · 13/12/2023 08:53

Women cover up more for exercise generally - and the fashion now is for leggings and a crop top rather than looser shorts and vest as it was 10 years ago.

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 15/12/2023 22:05

It's just as well really, they look hilarious in them.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 15/12/2023 22:12

Cyclists wear long bib tights though, including the men. So they must just be warm running

Daftolive · 15/12/2023 22:20

I’ve seen a couple of (youngish) men wearing running tights with looser shorts over the top. I’ve also been out in the freezing cold wrapped up to the eyeballs and seen men walking to the local shop in shorts. They just add a hoodie over their T-shirts for the winter!

Because cycling you alternate between hot (on the climbs) and cold (on the descents, and on the coffee stop...). Running you just get up to temperature and stay there - it's much more of a steady state sort of thing as even on descents you are still working.

I think young men/footballers often wear tights and shorts over in winter. All the main sports (and cheaper) brands sell them. Normal for football around us.
