Which running app tells me how far I've run?

I've recently completed the Couch to 5K and am doing occasional Parkruns. But if I go out for a run from home and want to run a specific distance, is there an app that will alert me when I've completed that distance?

I'd like to improve my Parkrun time but can't go every week so want to do 5k runs from home. But other than mapping out a route (which won't be that easy as I don't live in the best location for suitable running paths) how do I know when I've run 5k?

I have an iPhone which will go out with me when I run if that makes a difference. Planning on buying an Apple Watch in the near future too.

I find Strava is best!

There's a lot out there that you can record live and will give feedback at intervals such as every km. Strava is a popular choice. Runkeeper also comes to mind. Zombies Run can also do it, but I mainly listen for the plot.

Phones tend to be less accurate than a GPS watch because the signal is triangulated off the phone network rather than a direct signal. It tends to be good enough but you can get random anomalies if the signal is bouncing between too masts. I once "ran a 3 min mile" while waiting to cross a main road 😂

Mapometer allows you to plot routes in advance to get an estimate of where you're likely to get to.

I've been using the Nike app as it also provides motivational running pod casts too (it's free). I think this is what you are looking for as it also teaches you to run intervals/run easy over different distances. My preference is just to run easy though!

If you want something that will alert you when you have run a certain distance so you can stop, I'm not sure strava will (it's great for lots of other functions). I don't know if an app that will do that, you might need a watch (garmin or similar).

Edwardandtubbs · 08/10/2023 08:30

You can use map my run and keep alerts on - it pings and vibrates every full kilometre and a lady says ‘total distance: 5k, total time 32minutes56seconds’ or whatever each time. So I don’t think you can get it to say - ‘stop you’ve done 5k’ but you can get it to be very vocal about your progress. You don’t have to put in a route, just hit ‘start’.

Strava

but the exercise app on an apple watch is a great start - just press start and it shows you the distance as you go. You can then (you don’t have to) upload the run to Strava which shows you where you’ve been and how fast you were and lots more data.

try plotaroute .com to work out a route in advance. You might find better options if you drive a short distance from home.

Wow, I was completely wrong in my previous post. You can set up audio cues in strava so it does exactly what you want. Your post made me check it out. Thanks.

StillWantingADog · 08/10/2023 08:37

Ps the exercise app on the Apple Watch can alert you with a little vibration when you’ve got to 5k.

Burnamer · 08/10/2023 08:38

Strava! It’s great and the free version will do exactly what you’ve asked.

piintheski · 08/10/2023 08:38

Once you have chosen a running watch, then get the app which goes with that watch. I use Garmin

eurochick · 08/10/2023 08:43

I use the free version of mapmyrun. This tells you your distance, total time and slit time approximately every km. I'm not sure if it lets you set up an alert at a particular distance but you can look at the app to see the distance at any point.

Runninghappy · 08/10/2023 08:44

Strava is the most popular and does everything you’d need.

unsync · 08/10/2023 12:57

I have a Suunto which I then sync to Strava via the Suunto app.
