High visability running stuff

Hi all, wondering if anyone had some recommendations for high visibility clothing or gear that would help me be seen on early morning runs? A running jacket would be great as I don't have one yet so could do two birds with one stone and get a reflective one. Seen some pricey ones don't mind spending a bit of money but don't want to buy a crap one.

Also of anyone has any tips for running in the near darkness, it's new to me and I live in a rural village with not much lighting. When I cant get out in daylight I'm going to aim to go early mornings about 6ish, rather than evenings

I have a head torch - they're not that bad to wear and help massively. I just bought a cheap one off amazon.

I use a Proviz jacket , head torch, running shoes with a reflector strip, running leggings with reflector strip and clip on reflectors around the ankles. I don't use headphones when running in the dark.

Only problem, I still haven't found a jacket that doesn't get sweaty during the run.

I'm not a runner but a driver on rural roads so I'd make a plea for you to get a reflective jacket! They are so much better than any other type of clothing in terms of visibility. My dh has one for cycling and running

That jacket is amazing! Exactly what I need. And a great price. Unfortunately they don't seem to do bigger than a size 14.

Crabacus · 28/09/2023 07:25

@Usernamesarenoteasy what about a men's one? I'm a size 18 myself and often just go for the men's version of things!

Most of us wear chest running lights in my club. You can buy on Amazon for less than £20. Light flashes back and front. Proviz is good for reflective clothing. Decathlon or Sports Direct also an option, a fluorescent gilet is an option. Your top should be fluorescent or light in colour.

Oh my god 🙄
Thank you, brain obviously not engaged 😆

The only thing to mention with those hi-viz fully reflective jackets, is if you are running behind someone wearing one they are really dazzling 😂 ds wears one, and I can't run behind him without blinding myself (not a problem up until this year, as we could run side by side, but he's now faster than me, so I'm behind him!).
His one has detachable arms, I think he got it from Halfords, it's not hugely breathable though, so if you are working up a sweat it may not be great. I wear a high viz tabard, leg bands, wrist cuffs and I made a high viz head band for my torch. In colder weather I use high viz gloves, I have it on good authority I'm very visible by friends who see me out with ds😂.
Make sure you wash your high viz stuff every month or so (depending on how often you go out, as it gets grimy quite quickly), I do mine on a cool wash, with a teeny bit of non bio (tiny being approx 10mls...not enough to damage the fabric but enough to get the visibility back).

Puritizer are they good those chest lights? I've been emming and erring about investing in one for ds, as he doesn't like wearing a head torch.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 28/09/2023 08:36

The Proviz stuff is brilliant and they currently have items on sale. They even do reflective Tshirts and Gilets so you don't have to be boil in the bag in a jacket.

I opted for their reflective baseball cap too, it's really breathable so you don't get too hot.

I also have some LED cuffs (pretty cheap on amazon) that I wear around my ankles. You can wear them around your wrists but they annoyed me there.

Idrankyourbananamilk · 28/09/2023 08:47

Proviz is ace. Reflective gear is a good shout if you will be on roads with cars, bikes etc. would also suggest a bright colour for the awkward transition to daylight hours to be easily seen.

I have a chest torch and it’s much nicer than a head torch for me. However it’s not as powerful as my best head torch and if I’m doing trails in the dark I need my head torch too. Bad ankles prone to turning on tree roots!

Puritizer · 28/09/2023 09:38

Chest torches are great. Everyone in my club wears one. I don’t see anyone with head torch. We are in London so have street lights but there can be dark patches. You can set them to flashing mode too.

BarnacleBeasley · 28/09/2023 09:45

I find Knuckle Lights best for running in the dark, as you wear one on each hand and they light up the ground ahead of you without dazzling people coming the other way. Having two lights also helps with depth perception.

If you're fairly new to running, it might be worth seeing how many layers you actually feel comfortable with before investing in an (expensive) running jacket - I have been running for years and have never worn a jacket because I get too hot. In winter I wear a hi-viz gilet with reflective zip, and I also get two of those very cheap reflective armbands with red led lights on and velcro them round my waist.

anunlikelyseahorse · 28/09/2023 09:50

Thank you all. Proviz Chest torch ordered...that's Xmas sorted for ds!

eurochick · 28/09/2023 10:14

I'm also a proviz fan. It really does light you up like a Christmas tree when car lights hit you!

DCINightingale · 28/09/2023 11:52

Wow thanks all for your replies, loads of helpful suggestions here for me to look at!

I have an expensive New Balance yellow jacket but the pockets are highly annoying for carrying anything so don't be sucked in 🤣. You might find stuff on Ebay too.

Polis · 28/09/2023 13:25

I just wear a kiddies pink high viz vest over whatever I else I am wearing. It was about £3 I think.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/09/2023 18:54

Decathlon is great for value reflective, thermal gear and chest torches. It lasts well too.

A head torch reflects the fog of your breath and sweat in cold weather.

Reflective is important for night. Neon is useful in the day when light is poor. Combining both is the best of both worlds.

Lemonyyy · 30/09/2023 10:19

I wear arm straps with lights in them, I think I got them from Amazon. You can adjust the size so you can wear them on arms or ankles if you want. I set them to flash but they can be constant as well.

I do also wear reflective clothing there’s just something about a flashing light I quite like safety wise.
