Nuffield gyms

I’ve seen an ad on FB and there is one near me. I was thinking I might join when I come back from holiday, it seems affordable compared to David Lloyd, for example. As much as you can generalise, are they nice? Do they have a certain “vibe”? Friendly or snooty? I tend to get bored easily, but I thought I’d go for a few months to get into shape after the holidays.

I go to a Nuffield gym. I like it. It's very friendly.

LadyWithLapdog · 08/08/2023 06:51

Thanks for replying. Do they provide towels? I’d be going off peak (for cost reasons), so on my days home, not on the way to/from work, I can bring my own.

No you'll need to take your own.

The Edinburgh one is a disgrace. Snooty staff who knew fuck all, towels like dishcloths and cracked tiles/missing lights etc in the pool. And they wanted £78 a month. The David Lloyd here is awful too. Full of kids and a snooty vibe. Also £££. I use the council gyms/pools/classes for £28 a month.

I like Nuffield. I think (in my area) that at one point it was very upper class but there's generally a high staff turnover and it's looking a bit more run down than it did in its heyday.

I don't find it snooty - it just has good people in it.

I have young children but David Lloyd is too child orientated for me (the irony!) as if I'm at the gym I'm enjoying temporarily being able to be an adult without a child in tow!

LadyWithLapdog · 09/08/2023 20:52

Surprising to read about the Edinburgh one being so run down. Also other PP’s one looking a bit tired now. I guess I’ll go and visit the local one when I return from holiday. I’ve been to the local DL several times, usually for children’s birthday parties and the like and I agree, can feel a bit like after school club.

Re towels, it’s probably a good idea from an environmental PoV to bring your own, though I imagine it’d be annoying to carry around a ton of water to/from work if you go in the mornings.

Not sure which Edinburgh one you mean, but I’m aware from the inside POV that they are all fucking atrocious, Chesser being the utter worst.

Management are malicious, treating their staff horrifically, they won’t spend on what is required and too busy spending work hours “colouring in” with their colleagues.
Aside from that they slut shame women in bikinis/two pieces. First hand experience. Fuck Nuffield.

I go to the Nuffield gym in Chichester. I do the classes, yoga, Pilates, body balance etc. Excellent trainers. Classes at all times of day. Only negative is that you have to book at 7am to get into class of your choice. Good pool, sauna etc. I don't do the machines but there seems to be a large choice.
Always greeted by friendly reception staff. Changing rooms large and clean. Couldn't recommend more highly.
Why not book a free trial day?

AHugeTinyMistake · 09/08/2023 22:06

You can get 3 days free at Nuffield on a trial

I did it over a bank holiday weekend when I was bored. Really liked the pool/sauna, the gym was decent and there were a good range of classes - you can book them at reception to try out. They don't do a towel service though

I joined Bannatyne in the end as they open half an hour earlier which makes a pre work swim possible.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/08/2023 22:28

I’ll see if there’s still a free trial and the no joining fee offer when I come back from holiday. Also, if I don’t gain more than a few kg on holiday I might not need it. I haven’t even left yet, but im feeling defeatist.
