Running on holiday

Currently training for my first half marathon in early September, all is going well and up to 11 miles, running 3 times a week.

I’m on holiday for the middle 2 weeks in August and it’s going to be tricky to fit long runs (not impossible but certainly difficult ). Would it ruin my training to do 4 shorter runs instead (probably no more than 10/12k).

When I was training for a half I just did one long run a week. I did a hilly run, a fast run where I really pushed myself and a long run. I think as long as you fit one long run in you would be fine. Good luck

It will be fine, do uphill runs if you are doing very short runs, if you can

weasle · 23/07/2023 22:44

I had a similar situation last year.
I think I did three 8-10km a and a couple of 5ks whilst away for a fortnight. Issue was trying to get up early enough so it was cool enough! Similar this year but I'm only away for a week so will have to do a long run before I go and when I come back.
You'll be fine if able to do 11 miles. I'm still way off that but hoping I'll be able to find some motivation soon!

I don't think it'll really matter, as long as you can make a couple of the runs challenging (hills if there are any at destination, or intervals, or a tempo/threshold pyramid)

When in September is the Half? If it's at the start, you won't have much time to taper, so try to schedule a long run (long by time on your feet, not necessarily distance) as soon as you are back. Be wary of overdoing it though. If it's later in the month, you'll have time to build up a bit to a couple of long runs before tapering. Don't increase duration too much if time is tight, no matter how sorely you are tempted, because the last thing you need is an over-use niggle (or worse, injury)

If you're up to 11 mi now and have time to get back to it before the taper, a couple of weeks of little and often will be a good mid-plan recovery phase anyway.

Just an update to say I managed to run the first 10 miles and mile 13, but ran walked 11 and 12. Pretty happy with that given it was quite hot as well! Crossed the line swearing I’d never do another, but once I’d recovered I felt a bit differently!

Well done!!

(Was it The Big Half? If so the sun and temperature were pretty brutal and between miles 10-12 is pretty boring as well as having little shade, so I think you did the right thing to dial back for that bit)

weasle · 07/09/2023 21:32

Well done OP!
If it was the Big Half it was very very hot towards the end!

DancingQueen2018 · 11/09/2023 16:49

Thanks @weasle and @AuntieStella . It was the big half, I didn’t start until 10 so it was hot
hot at the end. Thank goodness for the fire brigade hoses!

Running a 10k this weekend, they trying to work out how I want to go forwards.
