Anyone for a running training thread?

So I was a good runner in what feels like a previous life (pre kids!) and have recently got back into it. Done the couch 25k program and am gradually building up the mileage with a view to doing a half marathon in may and a full marathon in October next year.
Could do with some support /chat with anyone else training for a race or just wants to debate the finer points of the importance of interval sessions (I hate them!)
I was sure there used to be a running thread on here but I can't find it!

I’ve got into London but on a GFA so I found out at about 9am so not had the torture of waiting! More people I know than usual seem to be in this year

xsquared · 24/10/2022 17:34

Nope, wasn't meant to be.

Never ran a road marathon race before but have done plenty of HM distance+ in training.

Any recommendations of a debut marathon event? I'll check out Edinburgh and Manchester first.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 24/10/2022 17:46

Manchester is brilliant. They’ve worked some hard to fix a dodgy reputation (short courses/bad organisation etc) and they’ve improved the route massively

Namechangefail123 · 24/10/2022 17:47

Of the marathons I've run, probably Eden in Cornwall is my favourite!

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/10/2022 20:39

Manchester was a great event. I'd definitely go for that. Great support, which really helps. And a better route than London, I'd say.

Lochness is my favourite marathon by far.

I got a knock back today from London. I only entered ballot as wanted the new sponsor medal , as I already have flora and a virgin one

I did feel guilty entering ballot as I have done it 3 times before.

Indoctro · 24/10/2022 21:05

I'm doing my first ultra in 2 weeks the Dava 50
I've had a dreadful year. I tore the ligaments in my ankle running down a hill fast with my dog (canicross) in feb then got hit with covid in June which took 8 weeks of doing nothing.

So I've only had 10 weeks to train for this ultra. So far so good though and feeling strong. Got another big week this week then a short taper and race is on 12th Nov.

speakingofart · 25/10/2022 11:10

Can I join this thread please? Was absolutely stunned yesterday to get a ballot place for London - wasn’t expecting it at all and it will be my first marathon ( did a half in the early summer) so very nervous! Am also slow as a tortoise 😂

RunBecause · 25/10/2022 12:15

@Indoctro i did the dava way last year! Good luck it’s a lovely race. Are you planning to run the whole thing or run walk strategy?

@speakingofart (why did I read that as speaking o fart 🤣) wow that’s great!

Indoctro · 25/10/2022 12:40

@RunBecause ah you will of ran past me I was on registration , then checkpoint 1 and finally the last marshal as you entered grant pack 500m from finish.

I'm looking forward to it.

No I can't do run/walk I find if I start walking I can never get going again. I'm planning on running it all. Hoping for around the 6 hour mark.

Well done on getting a place. Hope the training goes well.

RunBecause · 25/10/2022 12:50

@Indoctro were you the lady at those awful stairs into grant park? At least I don’t have to try to decide whether to warn you about the hill at the end..!
I usually plan to walk the hills which meant a lot more running for this run than I’m used to 🤣

RunBecause · 25/10/2022 12:51

Ps I was a lot slower than 6 hours but speed is not my forte

Ha ha yeah that was me.. you probably heard me before you seen me Wink

I'm also from Forres originally so I'm all too familiar with Cluny hill.. I think I will be very much cursing it come the day.
It's a bit of a brutal finish up and over it Confused.

RunBecause · 25/10/2022 21:07

It is brutal! I called Kyle a sadist at the finish line 🤣 Those steps were a killer - thanks for being so encouraging (I’m pretty sure I moaned!)

Thank you! Getting very baffled by the number of different training plans available, but they all seem to suggest I've got a month or so before I need to start, so I'm going to focus on getting my weekly mileage back up a bit and some strength training while I decide which one to use.

needastrongoneagain · 27/10/2022 08:02

I'd definitely use the next month for building up a base, it'll make the actual training SO much easier.

5 miles Tuesday and 6.5 last night. All super easy pace. Running for pleasure at the minute only.

Good luck for the Ultra!

Indoctro · 27/10/2022 08:23

@needastrongoneagain

I'm gutted. Yesterday I had to stop my run I've really bad food pain ..Google tells me it's extensor tendinitis

I have always ran in Altra zero drop shoes for years and I bought a pair of 5mm drop Topo Althletic and went out and ran 14 miles on Saturday. Sunday I had a niggle so I gave Mon and tues a rest then yesterday I had a big session of reps , after 4th rep I had to stop and limp home.

I hope a few days rest and it will be ok as I've only 2 weeks to go. I will be gutted if it stops me from getting to start line.

Sambal2 · 27/10/2022 11:04

@Indoctro well… i tried Topo and Altra (have ridiculously wide forefoot so the natural toe box was good). But i then got bad pain in the instep and running up to my ankle. Would start after just a few km. Switched to shoes with more cushioning and the pain disappeared. So personally i need more shock absorption than the barefoot shoes provide.

RunBecause · 27/10/2022 11:11

Oh no @Indoctro
at least with two weeks to go you won’t do any harm if you rest

Indoctro · 27/10/2022 13:28

@Sambal2 Altra do some very cushioned shoes..I wonder if you tried the escalante which are more like a racer shoe.

Have you looked at the Olympus.? They are 33mm stack which is pretty high.? Same at the Torin for the road again very high stack. I can only run in cushioned shoes

My issue has been adding a 5mm drop after years of zero I think it's stressed my foot. I just hope it lasts only a few day

RunBecause · 01/11/2022 06:30

How’s the foot @Indoctro ?

milkfromthesleepycow · 01/11/2022 07:42

Also hope the foots better @Indoctro

Any tips for running in the dark? Struggling with getting out now the clocks have changed- if I'm on a working day I can either run at 6am or pm, both fairly pitch black where I am. I've got a head torch that I've never used

The answers just to get out and do it isn't it.....

More positively my long run is up to 9 miles now. Feeling a pull in my Achilles at night though so going to keep my weekly mileage where it is for the month and not extend- sound right?

Hello

So I rested a good few days, Tried 1 hour on treadmill yesterday and got to 55 then it went sore

But it was ok at night and today not sure walking or that so hopefully that's a good sign.

Will test it again on Wednesday.

Re running in the dark yes unfortunately the cold horrid weather is so off putting but as always once your out and going it doesn't feel as bad. I prefer mornings than evenings when it's dark.

I can't get on with a head torch but I recently bought a chest light which is fab. It was £16 from Amazon, charges by USB and tilts so I have it angled towards the ground meaning I can see where my feet are going. I'm fairly booby but it's really comfy to wear.

Being part of a running club helps me get out in the dark, running with other people. Also, there's an annual challenge in my town where you run, walk, swim or ride every day in November. I'm not doing it this year but it helps build the habit of getting out. I don't enjoy running in the dark but once I'm out of the house I'm alright!
