Realistic to do 45k steps per day?

We're an office based profession. Currently doing a walkathon for September, there's a guy in another office who's done 230k steps (SUPPOSEDLY!!) since Monday, about 45k a day.

Is that even possible or is he just having us on?
FWiW, he looks late 50s and not sporty!!

He’s a cheat. Not possible, unless on a walking holiday or walking all day as part of your job, I’d say.

Verbena87 · 09/09/2022 19:47

When I did a 21 mile fell race, running, that was 40-something k steps. He’s a bullshitter or his watch is broken. Or both.

Fuuuuuckit · 09/09/2022 19:50

I did 66k steps doing a whole marathon.

I have been known to hit 15k full time on my feet all day in a big school running round (some times literally) after teenagers.

No chance he's done that many at a desk job unless he's walked to and from work and done a couple of hours on top.

bluebellsandcustard · 09/09/2022 19:54

I'll see if he keeps it up for a month!!! What a prat!

I thought 10k steps was 5 miles?

He'd done 44k before 6am on Tuesday!!

When we had an office walkathon the high steps were people working at standing desks with treadmills ... is that possible?

Cas112 · 09/09/2022 19:55

Highly doubt it

Alliolly · 09/09/2022 19:56

I work in a busy restaurant and regularly do 10-12h shifts. I just had a look and I've done over 45k only twice in the last 3 months, no way he is doing this every day with an office job.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/09/2022 20:24

I've not gone much beyond 30,000s and I'm a distance runner up to HM (13.1mi)

My days of highest steps tend to be at peak training milage on days that also include background steps of regular activity. Race days, I'm too knackered to do much for the rest of the day 😂

Doing 20k+ gets tiring particularly if it's ploddy on your feet activity.

I don't believe that someone spending the day in an office will have the time and energy to keep banging out 45k steps a day.

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 09/09/2022 20:26

We are doing a similar thing in our office. One of the guys is training for an endurance race at the moment and his steps are no where near that!

Your colleague is making a rookie error. If you’re going to lie at least make it credible!

jelly79 · 09/09/2022 20:29

I done a 12hour hike and hit 54k so he is full of lies!

Unless he has his watch strapped to a hamster who has eaten all the skittles

On the Camino de Santiago many walkers do 20-30k (and more) per day, early morning to lunchtime mostly. Then crash until next day, rinse and repeat. But it is very enjoyable and pace is not an issue either, you are not in a race. It is instead of, not inclusive of the working day!

Seems porkies to me to be able to do a similar amount + full time working, but what do I know of mens' capabilities.

ladyinthecampervan · 09/09/2022 20:42

We did a walk-a-thon at work a couple of years ago and averaged 25,000 -30,000 steps per day around our office jobs.
I was well and truly knackered at the end of each day. Couldn’t have fit another step in!

It would obviously depend on what other commitments he has though. I still had to cook, clean and ferry the kids around. If you just had to work & walk you could possibly fit in more.

I'd love to do that trail, it's on my to-do list!

Absolutely no way! I ran 20 miles on Saturday (marathon training) and mooched around town all afternoon and still only got to 47 thousand!

Itsmeagainyes · 09/09/2022 20:49

I used to do almost 30k per day but I never stopped and ran min 10k before work.

Soontobe60 · 09/09/2022 20:51

On holiday in Amsterdam, we walked for hours on 3 days, literally 6 hours each day. We totalled about 20k steps each day, so no, he’s lying.

IconicKitty · 09/09/2022 20:51

It would take just under 3 hours to do 20k if walking at a normal steady pace. So he would have to be walking for 6 hours a day.

LynneBenfield · 09/09/2022 20:52

44k before 6am? Absolute bollocks. He’s pulling an embarrassingly obvious fast one.

00100001 · 09/09/2022 20:55

I'd be tempted to ask him.

Wow, how do you cover so many steps? I did a 20 mile walk in the summer and that was only 30,000 steps! (Or whatever)

Katnissx · 09/09/2022 21:18

No shade, but why don't you just ask him? I think it's quite reasonable to question how he managed to do 44k steps before 6am?

I'd love to do that trail, it's on my to-do list!

It can be tough in places especially in bad weather, but it is a great experience. I am not a hell for leather walker or anything like that, I am a snail!, but I do have stamina at least so could do between 15 and 25k a day depending on the terrain and the stages where there was a bed!

I didn't do it all at once, but did portions over a few years. Lots of people do it that way as it would take 4-6 weeks without looking at the roses to complete it in one go! I did the French way over the Pyrenees, a bloody tough climb but I got my bags sent on to the next stop and that made it doable as I am a silver haired 60+ madwoman!

Have a look at the website caminodesantiago.me for lots of information if you ever get to do it.

CryCeratops · 09/09/2022 21:33

I’m struggling to believe that’s possible.

I think 10k steps is around 5 miles? So he’d have to be walking over 20 miles a day. With a full time office job? Not likely. Not unless he’s installed a treadmill under his desk and is walking on that all day long.

limitededitionbarbie · 09/09/2022 21:56

Is he counting wanking as steps. Sorry but it's the only thing that came to mind.

Egghead68 · 09/09/2022 22:13

10K steps walking takes me 1 hour 22 minutes so I don’t think 45K a day is realistic.

BloodyCamping · 09/09/2022 22:20

45k would be 18 miles for me.

have you asked how he gets his steps in?

it’s not impossible but a lot of steps! I do 10k walking to and from work, another 10k at work, plus any dog walks
