Realistic to do 45k steps per day?

We're an office based profession. Currently doing a walkathon for September, there's a guy in another office who's done 230k steps (SUPPOSEDLY!!) since Monday, about 45k a day.

Is that even possible or is he just having us on?
FWiW, he looks late 50s and not sporty!!

Very much doubt it unless he's walking for a few hours each day

dementedpixie · 09/09/2022 19:11

That's like 20 miles a day so very unrealistic

Orangello · 09/09/2022 19:11

Unless he's a full time on foot delivery guy, I don't believe that. I've done over 30K per day, but that was full day of sightseeing. No way I could have managed it on a regular working day when mostly stuck behind a desk. Unless he has an under-desk treadmill maybe? But most step counters need you to move your arms, so he would not be able to type at the same time..

Angelofthenortheast · 09/09/2022 19:11

I think you'd have to be walking non stop for approx 8 hours. Based on my pedometer saying I've done 1500 steps in 15 minutes

thanksamillion · 09/09/2022 19:12

I doubt it. By a rough calculation I'd have to run about 30km and unless he's very short his stride would be longer than mine.

oviraptor21 · 09/09/2022 19:12

I only hit 45k steps when I walked 19 miles.

kimchifox · 09/09/2022 19:13

Maybe he's strapped his watch to his cat whilst sleeping..

FrazzledHippy · 09/09/2022 19:13

I work in kitchens, doing 12h shifts with the 50 mins a day break. Do 11 hours on my feet. On a completley rammed day I'll clock 30-35k steps.
It's highly unlikely he's done that many sat behind a desk

Slushycuppa · 09/09/2022 19:13

My DH works in a job where he is walking on average 9 hours a day. I don't think he's hit 45k in a day. He is one of those people who likes to point out how many steps he does every day.

devildeepbluesea · 09/09/2022 19:13

Really unrealistic. I average 20k, and I’m fairly fit but still knackered by 8pm. Also my feet are beginning to show signs of over-use!

bluebellsandcustard · 09/09/2022 19:17

I thought 10k steps was 5 miles?

He'd done 44k before 6am on Tuesday!!

I think his Fitbit must be broken 😂

Phone Rocker/Swing Device - Compatible with PoGo/Step Challenges [Supports 2 Phones] [Mute Version] [USB Powered] https://amzn.eu/80Zn7M5

This is what you need.

ClaryFairchild · 09/09/2022 19:23

He has a cheap pedometer that reads the slightest movement as a step.

He's a bit silly to use that overnight.

If he wants to convince people he's not cheating you use it before midnight.

Oopsilot · 09/09/2022 19:24

Hmmm. His right arm has certainly been busy to do that many steps!

DelurkingAJ · 09/09/2022 19:24

Is he going for a bike ride and then translating the distance into walking steps? There was an issue with that the first time my work did this kind of thing and they had to issue a guide that showed how much different types of exercise were worth!

Given that 'step counters' work off arm movement that might just mean he's a wa.... er, walker who swings his arms a lot.

Ask him what distance it reckons he did.

He's not Gary McKee, is he? 😉

If this is a competitive walkathon with prizes for the greatest number of steps achieved, and this chap isn't noted for doing 3+ hours of running every day, I would be inclined to suspect foul play.

ememem84 · 09/09/2022 19:36

we have a treadmill desk at work. I did 5000 steps in an hour the other day. Fast walk pace.

so potentially doable if that’s what he’s doing.

in My last job we did a step challenge and I worked out that I’d get more steps if I sent my printing to another floor. Then used the stairs to get it.

Thats a hell of a lot of wanking...

JaninaDuszejko · 09/09/2022 19:44

My brother does a job outside that involves being on his feet all day. He also runs. He averages over 20K a day. That's similat to my very sporty daughter who does a couple of hours exercise a day (but also is in school for a big chunk of the day). I on the other hand swim every day but have an office based job (big site though so walking between buildings) and despite my morning 1km swim being calculated as equivalent to 7000 steps I never get over 15K 'steps'.

He's got it attached to a vibrator or something.

sunshineandsuddenshowers · 09/09/2022 19:45

Dh’s Fitbit is like this - insane overestimates of steps. Seems to count typing as walking!
