Is 5k in 42mins a 'brisk' walk?

I'm so confused with pace, speed etc etc. I just want to know if this is a fair old walk cos it feels it to me!

I've tried converting from mph etc but my maths lessons are too long ago.

Any fellow walkers got any idea please?

Yes, I'd say that was a very brisk walk.

Yes, it's only five minutes slower than I run park run!

Thank you @Neolara. I'd like to go a bit faster but it doesn't feel like it'll ever be possible 🥵

I suppose a brisk walk will be different for different people depending on their abilities and fitness levels. Generally speaking though I'd say 5k in 42 mins is a very brisk walk - based on my regular park run visits, most people who come in at 42 minutes are jogging, albeit at a slower pace. The tail walker is generally more like 50 mins to an hour. With 50 mins looking like they are walking briskly and an hour looking like a more comfortable stroll.

Yep, I tend to do it in about 50 mins and that feels brisk to me (but I do have very shorty stumpy legs)

msbevvy · 21/05/2022 12:25

It's 4.14 mph

That's just over 7km an hour so yes, pretty brisk. Around 4 and a half miles an hour.

Thank you for the responses. I walk at this pace for about 8k around 4 times a week and it's reasonably comfortable. I've tried running but I don't really enjoy it and find it soooo hard. So I guess I feel like I'm not improving anywhere

Yes very fast. I do 3 Miles an hour roughly walking briskly.

Why do you need to improve? What are you hoping to achieve - and I don't mean that in a snotty way, I mean it sounds like you're already a fast walker, is it better fitness levels or just a sense of achievement? Could you try a different type of achievement like walking a bit further or walking uphill?

According to this it is fast enough to be classed as brisk walking

For most people that's a very brisk walk but as this is MN I'm sure they'll be posters along to tell you that their 2 year old walks more quickly 😁

I think there is a limit to how much faster at walking you can get. If you want to use it to get even fitter ( you sound quite fit already!) maybe add some hills in to get you a bit out of breath.

Definitely.

I do park run in 40 mins. Yes that's brisk

Report
Noisyprat · 21/05/2022 12:32

It is brisk but is it flat/uphill/a mix? If you want to improve fitness and don't like running could you find some hills to walk up?

Report
dolphinsarentcommon · 21/05/2022 12:33

@Coughee both really. Over the past year I've tried really hard to improve my health and I enjoyed getting this far (well mostly). I just would like to getting fitter, and leaner/stronger.

A mix of hills and flat I guess. I could deliberately look for bills.

Sounds brisk to me. When I used to do long distance walking I'd aim for 6 km/h, so I could do a marathon in under 7 hours.

Ha! I clicked on this thread expecting to see a string of replies saying how slow the OP was!
I would say that was a brisk walk - if you were out of breath, then you've been working hard.

Definitely, when I used to jog/run my last race was 5k in 33 mins.

Well done! I think it's pretty normal for progress to plateau a bit. I found that hard after I'd been running while, it was great having a sense of achievement while I got faster and stronger and then I sort of peaked I guess. Maybe try some different goals? Could you add in some weight training or enter some sort of walking event?
