Is 5k in 42mins a 'brisk' walk?

I'm so confused with pace, speed etc etc. I just want to know if this is a fair old walk cos it feels it to me!

I've tried converting from mph etc but my maths lessons are too long ago.

Any fellow walkers got any idea please?

Sounds like a run to me!

Caulidop · 21/05/2022 12:56

If you want to build up maybe try putting running intervals in? Start with 30-60 seconds and see how you find it?

purplesequins · 21/05/2022 13:04

brisk - getting out of breath & slightly sweaty imo

it's a fast speed,

PipeScatter · 21/05/2022 13:08

5km = 3.125 miles (x5/8)

3.125 / 42 * 60 (mins) = 4.46 miles per hour

Sounds very brisk to me!

dolphinsarentcommon · 21/05/2022 13:36

Thanks all! I feel like I have achieved something then!

I should do weights and have been thinking about it for a while. I'm going to look at Bodypump online. I did it years ago and enjoyed the classes.

Stop comparing yourself to others, OP.

The people commenting that they do it much faster are probably younger, fitter and, crucially, taller!!

Think about how far YOU'VE come to get there and then aim to better it.

Nobody else matters.

Did I miss something? Most people on the thread say its very brisk and that they walk more slowly, not much faster. Some people say they run it faster, but that's totally different to a brisk walk.

imnottoofussed · 21/05/2022 16:06

I read somewhere that 100 steps in a minute is classed as brisk

dolphinsarentcommon · 23/05/2022 11:21

So my new target will be to improve my 5k time. So far I've used Map My Walk to improve my overall average speed/pace whatever it is, and keep track of distances.

It tells me total time and distance every kilometre so I'm going to try and get the first 5k time down with a mix of walking and a bit of jogging.

Thanks all, feeling a bit more motivated 🏃🏻‍♀️

I would keel over and die at that pace so you’re doing amazingly!

if you want a bit more of a challenge, could you put some weights in a rucksack and do the same walk? I did this when I was training for the army. Used to out a kettlebell in a rucksack and walk for as long as I could.

LividLaVidaLoca · 23/05/2022 11:26

My absolute fastest 5km was 38 minutes. Running.

I know I’m a slow runner, but you’d be legging it to walk that fast.

dolphinsarentcommon · 23/05/2022 11:27

@RibNSaucyArseCrack I've thought about some ankle weights if I could find some light enough and small enough

OP posts:
RibNSaucyArseCrack · 23/05/2022 11:29

Yeah that could work for sure!

riesenrad · 28/05/2022 20:18

Blimey that is really fast. I walk quickly but the fastest I've done 5k in is about 44 minutes. Have you thought about taking up race-walking?

riesenrad · 28/05/2022 20:20

Have you got a parkrun near you? You'd be nowhere near last with a walking time like that.

Hi. I should have added i am quite tall.. about 5ft 8in so I do have that on my side..

There is a park run near me but I always think they're for faster and younger than me.

ScarlettDarling · 28/05/2022 20:41

I’m very tall (5’11”) and I thought I walked fast but the last time I mapped my walk I did 5.3km in 48 mins so you’re much faster than me!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/05/2022 20:46

@dolphinsarentcommon, you might be surprised. I do parkrun, walking mostly at the moment because of joint problems, and I did it today in around 45 minutes and was by no means the last person. I love parkrun. You can check any event to see what the range of times is.

3beesinmybonnet · 28/05/2022 20:57

According to the NHS website you'd be able to talk but not sing whilst doing a brisk walk

HairyBum · 28/05/2022 20:58

5 k is 3 miles

Singleandproud · 28/05/2022 21:01

As a PP mentioned you could try a hilly area or steps or even adding in ankle weights or a rucksack. If you took a rucksack weighted with water you could drink it or water some flowers/trees with it if it's too heavy.

I “run” (more like a sort of shuffle really) park run in just a little under that. Usually I’m one of the last to finish, if not the last. A lovely steward once said to me; “you’re beating everyone who is still at home in bed or on the sofa”. It was so motivating. Now I don’t worry if I’m last I just remember that comment.

User7493268965 · 28/05/2022 21:13

I generally walk fast at 4mph on my own and it seems noticeably faster than a lot of people or 3mph if I am walking with DH, I struggle to walk at less than that, I am 5'10". I would say it was a brisk walk, in fact Apple Watch has asked me before if I am on a run at 4mph

Joeblack066 · 28/05/2022 21:36

So 5km is 3 miles; 3 miles in 45 mins is 4 miles per hour. Yes that’s brisk 😊

Penguinevere · 28/05/2022 21:38

That’s pretty brisk.
