Is 5k in 42mins a 'brisk' walk?

I'm so confused with pace, speed etc etc. I just want to know if this is a fair old walk cos it feels it to me!

I've tried converting from mph etc but my maths lessons are too long ago.

Any fellow walkers got any idea please?

I would definitely say brisk walking - good to see everyone agrees OP. I'm pretty sure you burn the same amount of calories per mile whether you walk or run.

Weirdest faux brag ever!!

It is faster than 4mph so pretty brisk. Depends on the context as to whether faster is achievable.

Hill walking then it is very fast. Power walking then pretty basic. On flat even terrain over a short distance not particularly quick. Postmen are supposed to average 4mph on their round.

I did the full moonwalk at roughly that pace.

Thank you to all for your words of encouragement. I'm pretty new to exercising and measuring it.. I decided after lockdown I'd better up my game else my long awaited retirement was going to be shorter than I wanted.

@ouch321 not sure if that was aimed at me, but if it is, I'm sorry you find me weird. I really don't care though

It's a good brisk walk. I can walk parkrun in 45 mins (my legs are short) and that's 4mph. Tail walkers normally come in at 50 mins to a bit over an hour, last week it was 1:05 at mine.

My brisk walk is in the speed zone which overlaps with slow jogging.

To me, a brisk walk is a walk that feels faster than your usual pace and feels like you're actively exercising rather than just walking to get from A to B. Therefore it's meaningless to say that a particular speed is "brisk." There are people out there who find my normal walking pace hard to keep up with, but I find some other people (usually tall people with long legs) hard to keep up with.

I've just done some calculations and that pace would equal 8.4 minutes per km. That's 8 minutes 24 seconds. When I use Strava on a longer run or one that contains some steep hills and a bit of walking, my pace is not much faster than that (I did 10K in a pace of 8:01 yesterday). So I would say in absolute terms that's fairly fast walking, but only you can tell whether it's "brisk" enough to be meaningful exercise for you.
