Time Trial with running club

I've not done this before and not quite sure what to expect. The instructions is to run as fast as you can but on the other hand, don't go out too fast.

The aim is to gauge current fitness and to reset training paces.

Sounds a bit silly, but I feel nervous about this and worried that someone might flatten me as they overtake me as there are some scarily fast people in the group.

My comfortable pace is 8:30 mm, but my best 2 mile effort according to Strava is 14:05 minutes which was completed as part of a longer run. I am aiming for around the same time or less but not sure how to start.

Any advice please? Thanks.

Just run it at your park un pace if you do parkrun. Steady but slightly pushing yourself. They just need an idea. And trust me, 8mm is not slow so relax. It’s supposed to be enjoyable not an ordeal.

I'm one of the slowest at my running club and noone has ever flattened me as they lap me at the track.
I agree with pp that 2 miles isn't so much shorter than parkrun so go out similar to that and speed up a bit part way through if you feel you have it in the tank

Thank you both.

hmmm... beta version is fun today. Keeps crashing me out (!)
You'll be alright, faster ppl will just dash around you.

Just be a bit wary of Strava, sometimes those fast paces are a glitch! I'd aim for a few seconds a mile faster than parkrun.

emmathedilemma · 20/04/2022 09:08

is it a 2 mile time trial? If so, i'd aim for slightly quicker than your 5k pace. It's a hard distance to judge, we usually do a mile and I'm rubbish at it as I'm never sure how fast I can run and maintain the speed for. I'm a distance runner through and through, I can't get upset about things like this!

xsquared · 20/04/2022 09:56

I've never actually run a Parkrun although I do run 4 times a week.

Like you @emmathedilemma , I'm more of a distance runner and no good at sprinting. I've done 400m intervals at 6:45mm pace with recovery in between, but would struggle to hold this for 2 laps, never mind 8!

Okay, I did it and came in at 14:19 after going out too fast in the first lap. I did manage to get a new record for 1 mile though, so I'm pleased with that at least!
