Hello,
I'm 3 months postpartum and I need to start losing weight because it's seriously affecting my mobility now. We have a David Lloyd club right next to us - this would make sure that I keep going (when I have to take the bus it quickly gets hard for me to make myself go anywhere!).
However, as far as I'm aware, it's incredibly expensive. If I go for an off-peak membership, how much is it likely going to be? I live in Edinburgh. I mainly want to go swimming really and possibly to the gym I suppose. I don't care about spa facilities and the crèche either (I wouldn't put my baby in there this young - I would just go when my husband gets home from work and he does shifts).

Our DL doesn't have toilets in the family changing room. So lots of peeing in the shower (which is in the changing room cubicle) means the smell is deeply ingrained. My kids are constantly complaining about it.

Tothepoint99 · 15/04/2022 07:48

We pay £192 for 2 adults and 3 children. Previously £183. I often dread the annual price increase for absolutely no gain whatsoever. That said, some of the costs quoted on here seem a lot higher than us.

Tibtab · 15/04/2022 07:52

Blimey, the one near me in Bristol is £150 per adult. They are massively oversubscribed though and people have to queue for equipment. I didn’t bother joining.

rookiemere · 15/04/2022 07:53

@tudorqueenie it depends what classes you want to go to. AFAIK Blaze - which is only available with the more expensive memberships - is very popular. Otherwise I've never had a problem booking classes with standard membership 9 days in advance.
But then I don't go for the popular after work ones - I'm either Friday or later in the evening.

We don’t have a family changing room. Not only is there regular weeing in the showers in the women’s changing rooms I hear from staff that adults shitting in the showers and sauna is a fairly regular occurrence. I’m in an unofficial DL fb group and shower shitting seems to happen at a lot of branches!
newbiename · 15/04/2022 08:07

My local one is £130 - too expensive for me.

GU24Mum · 15/04/2022 10:21

Be honest with yourself about what you're going to use it for and only buy add-ons if you'll use them. I've been a member a few
times but for me find it the worst combination of price versus facilities - I'd rather have cheaper and more basic or more expensive and nicer. It's obviously the right combination though for lots of people as they're still going!

If you only want your local one and only to swim, no point paying for enhanced club booking and multi-gym membership.

Check the pool times though to make sure they don't run toddler classes just when you want to be swimming!

I agree that if you do a taster and hold your nerve they'll offer you something especially close to the end of the month/start of the summer. They did once offer me something like £99 for the rest of October and through to the end of the following November (ie over a year) though sadly that was a mistake and they'd meant it to run only for 6 weeks instead.

theotherfossilsister · 15/04/2022 10:24

@tudorqueenie just to say, if you want to try Leith Edinburgh Leisure at a quiet time and try to motivate each other I'd be well up for it.
Not too bad a walk from Newhaven

Twizbe · 15/04/2022 11:15

That's disgusting people peeing in the shower!

Ours has a huge family changing room which has a dedicated baby changing room next to it. There's also a dedicated children's toilet on the other side.

rookiemere · 15/04/2022 12:20

The other thing rereading your OP, is you need to be honest with yourself for your motivation for joining and if you will actually use it.

So see how you get on with your 14 day trial - how often you go, and how it makes you feel. How much of a faff it is to get there and if it causes any issues with home timings.

Swimming by itself is not going to do much for weight loss. But if you do plan to do 3 times a week then it would definitely do a lot for your mobility and general fitness. Did you swim much in the past or stick to an exercise regime then ?

All questions to ask yourself before committing, because genuinely to lose weight and increase mobility probably the best and cheapest thing to do is buy a decent pair of trainers, a step counter and start brisk walking every day.

But I know it's about a lot more than that, so I'm not saying don't do it. I am a member mostly for the psychological benefits of the lovely outdoor heated pool but have realised that apart from a weekly ( twice weekly if I can be bothered) Body pump class, I much prefer exercising outside so I do parkrun and a neighbour runs an outdoor weekly class that I go to.

This is 100% true and exactly how I'm planning to use it. If it looks like I wouldn't be able to make much use of it, then I won't pay for a full membership - but if I can incorporate it into my days then it's definitely worth it. Yes, I used to be a competitive swimmer :))

@Twizbe went today - no toilets in the women's changing room or the family changing room. The smell of baked in piss in the family shower was horrendous. Massive oversight in a building which was built specifically for purpose. Considering not renewing membership due to this as it's that bad.

letsflyaway1 · 15/04/2022 18:19

@QuebecBagnet what's the fb group called?

Can a member regularly bring a non member just to sit in the lounge?

@Paddingtonthebear

Can a member regularly bring a non member just to sit in the lounge?
You can bring them as a social guest believe without using a guess pass.
HalleLouja · 16/04/2022 13:52

Cleebope2 · 16/04/2022 15:21

Yes you have to be there with your guests and sign them in

TheChosenTwo · 19/04/2022 22:06

@DukeofEarlGrey we are SE members and pay £140 each for platinum and about £30 for ds. We dropped the dds from our membership as they used it even less than us!
I think dh has only been once this year, but ds and I go sort of regularly.
Me more, him less so but it’s nice during the holidays to pop down for a swim. It’s less than a mile away and he likes the lunches!
I never understood the difference between platinum (which is what we have) and diamond? Anyone know? I cba to ask anyone there in case I get stuck in a longwinded sales pitch.
We have full access to everything including spa and get towels etc, what else does diamond get you?

Paddingtonthebear · 19/04/2022 22:25

I’m doing a 14 day trial with them at the moment so I can see on the app what the member levels are:

Platinum: Gives you unlimited access to the facilities at your home Club, plus access to selected other Clubs and facilities.

Diamond: the most inclusive membership gives you unlimited access to all Clubs and facilities, including luxury Spa Retreats

Paddingtonthebear · 19/04/2022 22:27

Basically Diamond lets you use everything, everywhere. Platinum lets you use some other clubs in the same “tier” as yours but not all clubs
