David Lloyd prices

Hello,
I'm 3 months postpartum and I need to start losing weight because it's seriously affecting my mobility now. We have a David Lloyd club right next to us - this would make sure that I keep going (when I have to take the bus it quickly gets hard for me to make myself go anywhere!).
However, as far as I'm aware, it's incredibly expensive. If I go for an off-peak membership, how much is it likely going to be? I live in Edinburgh. I mainly want to go swimming really and possibly to the gym I suppose. I don't care about spa facilities and the crèche either (I wouldn't put my baby in there this young - I would just go when my husband gets home from work and he does shifts).

@emmathedilemma

Ouch! I thought my gym membership was expensive! What’s the difference in the various prices? For £199 a month I’d want my sweaty gym kit washing as well 🤣
You can use the spas with diamond membership. Great if your home club has a spa, not great if yours just has a manky hot tub!
theotherfossilsister · 14/04/2022 18:38

Gah, might have to stay with Edinburgh Leisure I think if those are the prices

HalleLouja · 14/04/2022 18:43

If you know anyone who works for DL you can get 25% off membership. The new spas are amazing if that’s your type of thing and I can see why people would pay the extra for Diamond.

rookiemere · 14/04/2022 18:46

Not all memberships include racquet sports - I think the more expensive ones do. I don't play tennis but I think it's not too bad value if you do, compared to costs of hiring courts.

The outdoor pool really is lovely, sometimes you get it to yourself and if it's a sunny day it feels like being abroad - better really as you get to sleep in your own bed.

But for me it just becomes unjustifiable as I felt I needed to go twice a week to make it worthwhile and because of the drive to it and being able to do other things I enjoy again like parkrun, I just wasn't getting my money's worth.

But you live very close OP, so it's definitely worth doing the trial. Classes are good too, but because of covid worries I didn't go to that many apart from Body pump.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/04/2022 18:48

If you just want to swim why don't you use a swimming pool, you don't sound keen on the gym?

tudorqueenie · 14/04/2022 19:03

@rookiemere

I'm a member at the costorphine David lloyd - sadly about to cancel as I'm just not using it as much as I had hoped and it's a 15 minute drive away.

For a start see if you can get them to drop the joining fees, wait until nearer the end of the month as they may be trying to reach targets at that point. If you can afford to pay a year in one go, there's usually a 5% reduction. Also if you work ( or worked ) somewhere you might be able to get a corporate discount which is usually 10%. I pay £89.00 per month and had no joining fee.

The outdoor pool is lush and the main advantage it has over other gyms, but it can be busy particularly between about 8.30-10 am. There's a lot of retired folk who go there every day - aim to be one of them myself.

Ah, brilliant !! Thank you so much for this, much appreciated !

The ones I tried are very far away from us (I'm breastfeeding and I don't want to take that long to come back), and the even bigger issue is that they're EXTREMELY full, to the point where I had to queue in the water!

RAOK · 14/04/2022 19:10

Yes wait until the end of the month and they’ll probably have a deal on with no joining fee to help to meet their monthly target. That’s what I did.

rookiemere · 14/04/2022 19:13

The indoor pool at DL is hardly ever busy - only time I'd avoid is Sat and Sun mornings when there are lessons and lots of families.

Can you? My Dd works at DL and I pay full whack! I’ll be having words. 😁
DukeofEarlGrey · 14/04/2022 20:21

Wow, I have a Platinum membership in the SE and it's £135 a month... am I being ripped off??

It works on local competition.. I’m in the north, at the most basic, decrepit DL you could have the misfortune to be a member at and its one of the most expensive in the country (not inc the fancy spa ones). Platinum is more than £135.

We have 6 tennis courts, two tiny studios (16 max per studio), no Blaze, a lukewarm hot tub, a freezing cold pool and buckets stationed round everywhere when it rains to catch the water pouring through the ceiling.

The gym is tiny, one squat rack!

But there’s no other “premium “ gym in a 40 mile radius so they get away with it.

emmathedilemma · 14/04/2022 20:53

If you’re near DL newhaven then look at the village hotel and Westwoods. Westwoods does swim only membership if you’re not bothered about the gym, and it’s a full size 25m pool.

HalleLouja · 14/04/2022 21:21

@QuebecBagnet as long as you work a certain amount of hours you get a friends and family discount. Limited amount per year and only on the more premium memberships.

nevertrustaherdofcows · 14/04/2022 21:25

I was told they had ceased to offer an off-peak membership

electrocautery · 14/04/2022 21:32

You say you are near Corstorphine. Not near murrayfield at all? The gum above Sainsburys murrayfield is really good. It's £18.99 per month just now

electrocautery · 14/04/2022 21:32

*gym not gum

PaddleBoardingMomma · 14/04/2022 21:36

@Cleebope2

I pay £51 monthly off peak in NI. Worth every penny as I swim and use the spa 3 times a week. But £50 joining fee too. I tried to get 14 day trial for dd but nobody got back to me. Their customer service is frequently rubbish.
I swim and use the spa at dundonald too, hi! 🤣
Paddingtonthebear · 14/04/2022 21:40

Prices vary by region, but you can find the prices online. You do need to enter a name and contact number etc to see the price but I’ve done it several times lately and they’ve never called me 😆

Twizbe · 14/04/2022 21:48

I can't remember what we pay but we love our DL membership.

The classes are good and timed to fit around school runs / kids classes / crèche etc. the pool is great and the only one round here that you can actually get in to at the moment. They have a huge soft play that the kids love.

We're actually spending our entire Easter Sunday in the club 🤦‍♀️

Well worth the money IMO.

PeggyGa · 14/04/2022 23:23

I guess it’s what works for you.

I have the spa and gym membership and spend a lot of time there in a week. Probably about 16 hours.
Defo worth it, has everything I need, love the spa and outdoor pool. Been a member a year and keep thinking the novelty will wear off but doesn’t appear to have yet!

Cleebope2 · 15/04/2022 00:08

Paddleboardingmama Hi! Rather outing of me though!

Addicted2Crisps · 15/04/2022 00:18

Donkeys years ago, I paid £120 a month to David Lloyd. You need to watch your back in terms of cancellation lead times. It is usually three months.

Thanks everyone. This thread seems to have blown up haha :-) does anyone know if having 'enhanced booking' is worth it?

Depends on the club and the classes you’re interested in. If you don’t have it by the time you can book the class will be full. But you can put an alert on the app and people drop out before the class, but even then you might get beaten to booking the spare space. For me it wouldn’t be worth it as none of the classes I like tend to be full.
