Looking for some guidance about my exercise routine. I’m in my late 50s, have run 4 times a week since my 20s, no injuries up to half marathon distance. I’ve always maintained weight through this and fitness. But recently I’ve noticed I’m losing muscle and getting flabby (although no change in weight). So I think the time has come by I introduce some weight training but I don’t know how to balance this with running. I can’t fit in any more than 4 fitness sessions a week and I need that to run my 20 miles a week. Anyone got any suggestions about how to alter my routine?

Also be interested to hear of anyone who has switched the balance to more weight training and less running and how that feels.

Just giving this a bump for you as I'm interested too

Are there any gyms near you?

I use to focus on running, but i'm currently struggling with a knee issue which running seems to make worse.

I've tried doing weights myself but got bored

I've started doing Les Mills Body Pump sessions, i'm enjoying it.

I have some 5k dumbbells and use them when cleaning my teeth.

I made the shift about 3 years ago, at 46. Unlike you though I am injury prone and initially thought weight training would help me run without getting broken.

I love, love, love lifting heavy. I do 3 small group (max 4:1) sessions a week with a trainer and it’s transformed my body. I’ve put on a couple of lb in muscle although my bmi is still under 20 and I have a six pack. I love being strong, love learning new skills etc. However I miss running 😞 I rarely run any more and not the distances I used to, and a good run is such a wonderful thing.

I still do loads of cardio - high heart rate stuff in the gym, some more steady state stuff and the occasional shorter run but increasingly I find my knees can’t take running.

I don’t think that really answers your question, sorry OP 😅
