Running: Average weekly mileage?

How much running per week is healthy? If you do over 40 miles a week, how do you manage to fit it in week after week?

I used to run twice a week, same route around 4 miles.

Since this summer however, I've increased to 24 miles per week, following the half marathon Garmin coach plan.

I feel fine. No aches, pains, and not too tired unless I get to bed late when I'm meant to be up at 6 to do a long run.

I don't know whether this will last when I complete the training though.

Over 40 miles is only really usual for me when I'm in the longer weeks of marathon training. Then, it'll be one long run on a weekend morning, starting at 5am or so, and then 3/4 shorter runs midweek. If you imagine the long run is 20ish miles, getting to 40 for the week is easy.
Usually though, when not in marathon training, I run nearer 30 miles a week.
