How are you all feeling about returning to parkrun tomorrow? don't forget your barcodes... Wink

I'm really excited for it to be back.... can't help thinking it's going to be a little bit emotional too, everyone being back together again in one group and I'm guessing lots of newbies too.

I'm feeling disappointed. I'm self isolating so I can't go. I'll be back as soon as I can though. It's one of the things I missed most.

Bananarama100 · 23/07/2021 17:10

oh no, that's rubbish! I had to self isolate last week and when I first saw the ping my first thought was would it overlap with parkrun!

It's weird how much I've missed it, I really don't think I realised before how much a part of my life it's become.

I am terrified at the thought of running 3 miles again!

PiggyPlumPie · 23/07/2021 17:35

Jealous! Not quite ready for it yet in Scotland!

BogRollBOGOF · 23/07/2021 18:55

My wristband is on already! Grin
I'm on 44. I wanted to reach 50 by my 39th birthday, but there were a lot of cancellations for storms/ flooding winter 19/20 so I was aiming for Easter 2020.
I only ran one parkrun at 39!

I've been at the juniors every Sunday since April, mostly volunteering Grin

Are they swiping barcodes? I saw something on FB about having to have an app on your phone, but I didn't understand it. I don't want to cart a phone around the course and DS who runs it in about 19 mins certainly wont.

The barcode scanners will be using their phones to scan.

The runners just need their barcode, just as they always did.

BTW, there are enough excited people that there's also a thread in chat you might be interested in

I've been volunteering at junior parkrun a few times since it came back. Its just the volunteers with apps. Runners still have their barcodes as normal. Back in the day there were little scanners, but these are now gone and replaced by an app. I was supposed to be scanning tomorrow.

RunningFromInsanity · 23/07/2021 21:04

Super super excited!

Garfunkle · 23/07/2021 21:10

Me! Not tomorrow though. I’m working bah! 🤨 I’ve got a week to find my running gear and fit into it 😬 Wish me luck! 🍀 It’s been a long time but oh so welcome

AuntieStella · 23/07/2021 21:58

The scanning app is dead easy to use. But obvs no good if you don't have a smartphone.

Even before covid, all new parkruns were app for scanning and the old gadgets were being phased out.

I'm feeling amazingly organised as I remembered to print off a new barcode, as my precious one (still languishing in my phone case!) is very tatty.

Just remember to hold your barcode in one hand and your finish token in the other, so the scanner doesn't have to touch either them or you

FritataPatate · 20/08/2021 21:31

My first ever Parkrun tomorrow! (I'm 61 BtW- only been running for 10 months).
Any advice/tips?

emummy · 21/08/2021 09:38

Just seen this @FritataPatate, hope it went well! I am standing under a dripping pine tree in a forest waiting for my first runners - in Scotland so later start.

AuntieStella · 21/08/2021 21:40

Bet you were glad to be back!!

How are the numbers in Scotland?

Everyone thought it would be like New Year - lots of pent up demand so big turn out, but it's actually been pretty quiet (about 2/3 of pre-pandemic numbers). I think people just got out of the habit

Stylinson · 21/08/2021 21:44

I’ve just done my first ever 5 park runs. Not a runner at all and have to walk some of the way but I am absolutely loving it! First week was 35 minutes, today was 32, so I’m really slow but already getting better. Planning to go every week now.

AuntieStella · 21/08/2021 21:47

Hey, that's great!

It took me about 5 goes before I could get up the hill at my local without walking. I can still remember the feeling when I ran every step of the way - one of the best moments ever!!

Stylinson · 21/08/2021 21:50

Ours finishes with a hill - I can only just make it. Very envious of the people who have enough left in the tank to do a sprint finish!

Teaandakitkat · 21/08/2021 21:50

I was back today in Scotland for the first time. I was glad to be volunteering so I could keep my distance a bit, it felt very busy.

emummy · 22/08/2021 07:24

Ours has been ok; we are usually quite small, there are 2 bigger ones in the city about 20 miles away and a few other smaller ones scattered about. We had 90 last week, 68 this, and those are fairly average numbers for us. It's been lovely being back, everyone seems very happy. Ours also finishes up a hill and quite a few had forgotten just how tough it was!

Monkeytapper · 22/08/2021 07:33

Love parkruns, went go one yesterday, 290 people, such a great atmosphere
