Which Smartwatch?

I've decided to get a Smartwatch but am baffled by all of the options. I've ruled out the Apple 6 as I don't need the latest changes but can't decide whether to go for a different Apple (probably SE) or a Fitbit or something else. Relevant information:

  • I have small wrists
  • I have an iPhone
  • being able to check messages and things whilst out & about without resorting to my phone would definitely be good. I don't need to make calls from it
  • I want to count my steps
  • for exercise, I mainly do HiiT, weights and walking. I'd like to monitor my heart rate and anything else that can be tracked across those would be good
  • we live somewhere hilly so monitoring levels climbed would be good
  • I'd like to monitor my sleep
  • I'm not too bothered about whether I can listen to music through it but it would be a bonus
  • I'm tempted by the rings on the Apple Watch as they may motivate me but, on the other hand, if I completely miss them all, don't want it to demotivate me and then end up not wearing it!
I don't know what else I need to consider when deciding what I need/want. Any advice would be appreciated!

Since you have an iPhone your list of likes would point heavily towards an Apple Watch, it seems to me. I have one and am very pleased with it. Battery life means that I recharge mine every night, so don't do any kind of sleep monitoring. But if you top it up during the day you should be OK to use it for sleep tracking.

I have a Fitbit charge 4 which is better than Apple Watch for sleep tracking because you only need to charge it about once a week or so. It does notifications but only if the phone is in Bluetooth range. So you don’t need to get your phone out your bag but no good if it’s at home!

I have an iPhone and a Fitbit Versa 2. Much cheaper than an Apple Watch and think it does everything you need. I also only charge it once maybe twice a week.

I have an Apple Watch. It needs charging every 36 - 48 hours. It’s a bit annoying but the features really are excellent.

I did love my Garmin though. Only needed charging every few days but I had a basic one so I still needed my phone when running.

It’s nice not having to take my phone when our running though.

Thanks for the views. Somehow, I hadn't made the connection between how often it would need charging and when I'd actually do that! However, I've always struggled to sleep in a watch so the sleep tracking may be something I can't do anyway.

I have an Apple Watch SE and it's fantastic. I charge it for 30 mins in the morning whilst I shower and 30 mins at night whilst I read and that's all it needs. Would really recommend.

I gave my Apple Watch away, couldn’t be doing with charging it every night. My Charge 3 is about two years old now and I love it. Still wear it every day. I bought a selection of leather straps from Amazon for about £10 each and think it looks fairly good.

If Apple improve the battery life I’d buy another one but until then it’s a no from me.

i switched from a fitbit (had a versa and charge) to an apple watch - mainly for the extra functionality as i have a iphone
charge your watch during the day then you can use the sleep tracking, i usually charge mine when im working - i get on average 30ish hours out of a full charge

CarlottaValdez · 05/04/2021 08:52

I think the sleep tracking is a bit of a con anyway tbh although I do wear it at night anyway to track my resting heart rate. My Fitbit quite often thinks I’ve had 10 hours sleep or something when 3 hours of that was watching a film then reading in bed!

CarlottaValdez · 05/04/2021 08:54

To be honest I didn’t get an Apple Watch mostly because I thought I would mess with it constantly so deliberately went for something with less going on. If you’ve got more impulse control than me then this won’t matter!

My Apple Watch had to be charged every night. I want to wear a watch all day not charge it.

I have the Apple SE. Love it!
