Running sock recommendations

Hi all, someone recently posted about some fab running socks they had invested in. I need some decent socks with lots of padding (I really need new shoes but need them fitted so no chance of that for a bit). Any advice/recommendations from you inspirational runners?

PS - just smashed W6R1 yesterday, very proud of myself

I think the poster recommended 1000 mile running socks (because mine were delivered today and I bought them off the back of a post on here last week!)

I’ll report back tonight after my jog!

Freshprincess · 12/02/2021 14:52

I like my Hilly twin skins.

I’ve no idea what W6R1 is, but you seem excited, so we’ll done.

BusterTheBulldog · 12/02/2021 14:53

I like injinji toe socks personally. I think hilly do a toe sock now too, or hilly normal socks are great.

AuntieStella · 12/02/2021 14:56

W6R1 is part of C25K - well done!!

My favourite brand is Stance, but I like Hilly as well (the twin skins, but also have some of their other thinner ones)

Hilly Twin Skins for me too...

I always buy the high ankle ones rather than the shorter ankle ones which tend to ride down and cause rubbing on my ankle.

fellrunner85 · 12/02/2021 16:02

Injinji are my favourite.

I also love Hilly, though not the twin skins - for some reason, over long distances, they seem to give me blisters. But their Monoskins are great.

1,000 Mile are a bit thin for my tastes - in fact I reckon they're no better than the Decathlon ones that are £3.99 for two! I have loads of them though, as they always seem to be given away as race prizes.

someonelockthefridgealready · 12/02/2021 16:14

I have Thyo and Hilly twinskins and unlike the previous poster I have not had a single blister from running since I got them about four years ago. I run up to mountain trail halfs (so about four hours' running) in them.

Sorry if this is TMI, but it might be of help to someone reading, but I have dishydrotic eczema on my feet and they are in a horrible state all summer and the only reason I can keep running and even walking is with the twinskin socks.

Ecdysis · 12/02/2021 16:16

I also like the decathlon ones. However I have since discovered waterproof socks and they have been a revelation.

NoMoreMuchin · 12/02/2021 17:22

@Ecdysis please tell me more about the waterproof socks, my feet have basically been wet since November at this point

TheOrigRights · 12/02/2021 18:09

OP, we can book gait analysis at a local running store, so it might be worth checking if you have similar near you.

Running socks - I am fussy!

I want cushioning, no double skin and at least ankle height. It's surprisingly hard to find them. In this weather I'm wearing knee socks under my tights and my cushioned ankle socks (Hilly mono skin anklet) over the top. I am tall so I have a gap between ankle sock and tights.

TheOrigRights · 12/02/2021 18:11

Oh I mean Hilly Supreme Anklet!

CarrotPuff · 12/02/2021 18:36

Hilly socks. I have the monoskin ones, training for a marathon, no blisters here!

NoMoreMuchin · 12/02/2021 18:45

@Purplewithred just had a thought, if you feel the padding in your trainers is going, a temporary measure might be to remove the insoles and replace them with the sports gel insoles you can get? I run road races in very cushioned shoes like hoka's, but for trail runs I need the grip of trail shoes, which aren't very cushioned, so I replace the inserts with gels and it definitely helps my knees

Purplewithred · 12/02/2021 19:37

Thank you everyone. Unfortunately our local running shop is locked down so I'll have to wait for gait analysis and new shoes.

Gel insoles now on the shopping list, and I have a happy evening ahead of googling and comparing socks.
