Workout on wooden floors?

We have exposed original floorboards throughout the downstairs of our house.

My other half does weekly karate lessons on the bare wooden floors and I’m worried that he may damage the floors/joist or the water and gas pipes underneath them as he is a big chap and weighs 17 stones. He has habit of breaking things from various chairs to sofas.

We’ve just had a heated row over this as I thought he was using the foam mats and rug but when I popped my head through the door as I heard a lot of floor thumping, I saw him working out on bare floorboards.

Perhaps I’m just worrying over nothing ....

Your joists will be strong enough. Your pipes are not in any danger. The floor surface could get damaged if he is using any hard equipment like poles or weights but not if it's just his body. It will certainly be louder without a mat but a mat doesn't affect the amount of strain on a floor joist, which can take a lot more weight than a heavy man doing exercise.
