Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

Well done Cava!

minipie · 10/01/2021 13:36

Well done Cava! High five. As Jo says, you are now a runner!

RomanMum sorry about your ankle, that’s annoying. While you are waiting for it to recover you could do some upper body/strength stuff at home maybe? I like MadFit’s 15 minute youtube videos. I intended to do one on each of my rest days but it hasn’t quite happened...

redcandlelight · 10/01/2021 15:17

interesting about the zero drop shoes.
when I started running more than 20 years ago (before life got in the way) I ran in ver cushioned, quite high heeled shoes.
I developed shin splints. The physio asked me to switch to plimsole type shoes. no heel and not much support but a little cushioning.
we worked a bit on gait and posture.

my current shoes are decathlon own brand, not the cheapest. quite a low heel and no raised toe box.

fellrunner85 · 10/01/2021 16:50

Yes @redcandlelight- undoubtedly built up, "support" shoes are the worst offenders for causing or exacerbating niggles and injuries.
But going too far the other way, to zero drop or "barefoot" shoes, can have problems too, especially if you run lots of miles and don't rotate them with other shoes.
Most people tend to find a classic, cushioned (NOT "support"!) neutral road shoe works best long-term. But that sort if middle of the road approach doesn't keep the "gait analysis" bods in business and so isn't very trendy.

I say this as someone who started out with support shoes, switched to neutral shoes, had a long flirtation with barefoot running, and have now settled on neutral road shoes, with occasional zero-drop forays when on the fells Grin

Cavagirl · 10/01/2021 17:37

Aw thanks everyone! Definitely feeling it in my legs this afternoon!
Hope everyone else had good runs today if you made it out.

Deepintheforest · 11/01/2021 08:58

@fellrunner85 That is interesting about the shoes, I used to get awful shin splints and was recommended medium level support shoes in a running shop. I had no problems after switching to these for a long time but recently they've started niggling again. I have been blaming weak calves/glutes but perhaps switching up the shoes would help

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/01/2021 15:37

Hello!

W5r3 completed!!!

It was fine. I can’t believe it really, a few weeks ago 60 seconds of running was hard work that made me dizzy. But now a 20 minute run is ok. Had plenty left in the tank as well!

I have managed to take my mind elsewhere and think of other things when I’m running so the time passes quickly.

I made it to my landmark and back so it’s a huge personal achievement.

Much warmer today too. 8 deg so I ran in short sleeved top and leggings. Had a few winces from elderly ladies out with dogs, but I wasn’t cold. Had gloves on and neck warmer.

Talksunderwater · 11/01/2021 15:42

Well, this morning’s run was tough! I hadn’t been out running for 10 days due to the weather and I knew it would be a challenge even though I’ve done some work on the exercise bike. I went slower than usual and managed 4km which I’m fairly pleased about in the circumstances. I was absolutely gasping by the end so have clearly lost fitness. Hopefully the weather will be kinder now and I can get back into the running. Well done to those dedicated few who have been going out - am impressed!

ememem84 · 11/01/2021 16:11

i went out at lunchtime, am week 5 (again). i forgot that week 5 run three was 20 mins straight running. almost died after about 10 minutes. it also rained. so will be repeating this one until i can get further.

Cavagirl · 11/01/2021 16:26

Yes! Well done Dobby !!! What an achievement! And plenty left in the tank - you'll be on 10ks soon Grin

Well done talks and ememem !

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/01/2021 17:01

Thanks cava.

It felt good, but I missed the final part of jo’s chat. I bumped into a friend as I was starting my cool down walk and had a quick chat (2m apart) But couldn’t stop the app in time. I wanted to hear the last bit, but I’ll try to find it later.

I used to run about 12 years ago. I did some runs 10ks and was even in the local paper! I’m by no means a runner naturally though. I feel better prepared to run now than I was then. I used to run in a group from my gym.

All that’s long gone now. In the dim and distant past. Before kids.

minipie · 11/01/2021 17:24

Well done everyone! seems there are a few at the same stage?

ememem rain sucks doesn’t it? Every run helps even if it wasn’t quite ticking the next c25k box, hopefully you’ll find it easier next time.

Well it seems the iphone Health app has been a little optimistic about my distance covered Blush. It told me I did 5.8k on w3r1, but today I downloaded Strava and did w3r2 and that tells me I did 5.1k- so definitely think the Health app added a bit! Oops.

LakeFlyPie · 12/01/2021 14:40

Impressed with all the freezing weather runners, I've only been out twice this year as the pavements have been icy and didn't want to risk injury. It's the longest break between runs that I've had since starting C25K at the end of the summer. Only managed 3 k last run and it was hard work. Need to make myself do 5 this evening and keep it up.
Congratulations on your 20 mins Dobby Smile

schoolcook · 12/01/2021 16:18

Hi all I've not posted much but still plodding along for 5K 3 times a week before work.

I'm struggling a bit with my breathing.

I sound like darth flipping Vader Blush

Is that normal after doing this same run for nearly 3 months now ? I don't feel extremely out of breath but my song will stop and I can hear myself and quite frankly it's shameful Shock

redcandlelight · 12/01/2021 16:37

@schoolcook
I sound like an ancient steam engine!
I also can't breathe through the nose when running...which I heard other runners say is a bad thing, but I can't run otherwise.

redcandlelight · 12/01/2021 16:44

@LakeFlyPie in a way it's easier to run in cold weather, you don't get so hot. plus there are less insects around to swallow (if you are a mouth breather)

schoolcook · 12/01/2021 16:45

@redcandlelight ah that may be my problem then as I can't breathe through my nose at the best of times Shock

Cavagirl · 12/01/2021 17:00

W6R1 done! I actually ran the third 5 minute interval, I really ran it like a kid and felt fast!!
I think I'm hooked!!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 12/01/2021 17:04

Just made a start with w1r1 - went okay. Just trying to get the speed right. I think I underestimated how fast I should go - didn't want to get overwhelmed and ended up shuffling along like an old lady! Will try to go marginally faster next time.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/01/2021 17:18

Wowsers cava you are flying along now! Well done.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/01/2021 17:19

Elizabeth don’t go too fast. It’s a light jog! Who is your “voice”?

Best of luck. It’s such a sense of achievement.

redcandlelight · 12/01/2021 17:23

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden
go as slow as you need to. it's not a race.
great thing about starting now is that you are ready to explore a wider area running in the spring.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 12/01/2021 17:29

Thank you for the encouragement and advice - and you, RedCandle. I deliberately didn't go too fast this time, but I do want to find a comfortable pace and not be tripping over my feet! I won't push it too hard at first.
LakeFlyPie · 12/01/2021 22:06

Well done for starting Elizabeth, it's a great programme. I'm a strong advocate of taking it slowly. My W1R1 was the worst of the entire programme, I set off at a sprint and thought I was going to expire by 60 secs! I found the Health Unlocked C25K group really good for general advice and the moderators on there seem to emphasise the wisdom of taking it slowly to progress comfortably through the programme.
redcandle that's true about the bugs 😁, I don't mind the cold so much but definitely don't want to slip on ice. I have a damaged cruciate ligament in my knee and it hasn't caused any bother through my jogging journey so don't want to wreck things now by slipping or skidding on icy pavements.
Had a lovely albeit Baltic jog this evening, I don't know why sometimes things just seem to click, managed 5k comfortably and felt like I could have carried on but we were home and I needed to cook dinner. We're planning on trying to add a km to one of our runs each week and see if we can inch up to 10k eventually, am hoping the training will increase my stamina and I might be able to get a bit faster losing a few IVs would definitely help too

DobbyTheHouseElk · 13/01/2021 16:38

W6R1 today!

Feeling achy for the first time today. Came back from my run with a sore arm...I mean arm? Why. Really random.

I’m running along now and not noticing I’m running which is good. Still feel I should be faster, but no idea what speed I’m doing.

Today the wind wasn’t helping and the route was so wet. Slippery, sloppy mud and big puddles. But I battled on! Wasn’t as enjoyable today, but felt better when I got home for having been out.

Hope everyone has had a good run today, at least it’s warmer than last week!
