Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

Thanks for the support Smile
Yes I like the idea of a slower pace and then speeding up. I need to remember to accurately time my run as I just turn strava on at the beginning and end at the moment but then that includes the warm up/ down as well.

tizwozliz · 01/03/2021 12:32

4.5km in 30 mins sounds like quite a good pace to me

Yep, this is about the pace i ran for my first 5k and I'm under 30 minutes now. Also if you're using your phone GPS to measure the distance you might find you're also closer to 5km than you think. My phone measures my route as 4.9km but the garmin measures it as 5.2km.

WhereAreWeNow · 01/03/2021 14:51

Thanks @AlexaShutUp . It felt like an achievement this morning - just getting out of bed feels like an achievement on a grey, chilly, Monday morning in lockdown!

@tizwozliz that's interesting about the different GPS measurements. My measurements were with the the Huawei Health app. I'm thinking of getting a Huawei smart watch - it'll be interesting to see if measures distance differently.

Therearenomore · 01/03/2021 15:29

I've found it quite fascinating watching the distance change from run to run. I'm actually doing less distance on week 3 than week 1 so far. I've been starting tracking as soon as I leave the house and including the warm up and stopping it when I get back so it might be interesting to try tracking only the running/walking bits for curiousity.

BobVance · 01/03/2021 16:33

W3R2 today after not having run for over a week for a variety of reasons.

Started out really well, was in my first walking break and a woman who was power walking passes by and asks me “are you doing some kind of running plan?” I replied, “yes I am” and she said “oh that’s truly wonderful, well done you, brilliant”

I know what you’re thinking - it’s nice that this stranger was so polite and encouraging but she had a really patronising tone. I’m obese so it’s not pretty when I run and I can’t help but think she wouldn’t have said it to someone who was visibly fitter. I know I’m overthinking it but it really was an odd encounter. I get plenty of encouraging smiles when I’m out, especially from other runners, but no one has ever said anything before.

Anyway, I got on with my run and really enjoyed it. Found a new route, which helped.

Cavagirl · 01/03/2021 18:38

Sorry BobVance Sad
I'm always amazed in this thread the number of people who have comments made to them. People always talk about how Londoners are unfriendly and don't talk to each other but I think this is definitely one of the upsides that you have less of this kind of commentary on your life from randoms when everyone ignores each other!
I think you can take it how you choose to take it, and just decide to interpret it as a positive comment from a nosy/bored person who has nothing better to do.
I will never understand people who feel the need to say these kind of things to random people in passing though!
Well done for not letting it ruin your run! Bet she couldn't have run for toffee Smile

WhereAreWeNow · 01/03/2021 19:05

@BobVance she probably meant it as a genuine encouragement but I think I would have been a bit peeved too. She probably didn't intend it to sound patronising but I think I might have interpreted it that way.
Earphones are good for blocking out comments Grin. I run early (7am) so I don't have to deal with looks, comments, or just feeling self conscious.
The upside is you got on with it and found a new route that you like.

BobVance · 01/03/2021 19:38

Thank you @Cavagirl and @WhereAreWeNow I’m glad you know where I’m coming from - couldn’t help but feel like I might be being a bit silly by feeling a bit annoyed about it. She probably meant well.

I actually had earphones in and took them out when I could see she was trying to get my attention - I thought she might be lost!

Cavagirl · 01/03/2021 19:44

🤣 OK now she sounds a bit mad and extremely bored!!!
Onwards & upwards!

Therearenomore · 01/03/2021 21:25

Oh, actually interrupting you like that, that's a bit off Bob! I see what you mean. More for her benefit than yours...

I did W3R2 tonight and did a spectacular trip and skid diagonally and sideways as I tripped on a kerb just in front of a nice woman who rushed over to see if I was ok Blush My jacket saved my top half mostly but my leg is scraped from top to bottom. I was so mortified I kept running longer than I had to to get out of sight 😱

BobVance · 01/03/2021 22:13

Oh no @Therearenomore !! Are you okay? Sounds painful.

Therearenomore · 01/03/2021 22:25

Thanks Bob Smile I’m mopped up, my leggings are sewn up and I’ve demolished most of a bag of nachos so I’m feeling better. I may change my route next time though...

Talksunderwater · 02/03/2021 12:58

Ouch @Therearenomore! That doesn’t sound fun.

@BobVance - completely understand. I too don’t understand people who comment, even if they do most probably mean well. I was obese when I started C25K last Sept and felt really very self-conscious so wouldn’t have appreciated any kind of comment. Now I’m a healthy weight I don’t feel self-conscious anymore and I realise that most runners are so intent (like me) on what they’re doing/listening to that they don’t even notice others so I needn’t have felt as though everyone was looking at me. Or maybe that’s just here in London as @Cavagirl suggests!

BobVance · 02/03/2021 15:49

Thanks @Talksunderwater and everyone for your kind comments - really appreciate the support and I just hope I don’t bump into said woman ever again!!

Glad your leg is okay @Therearenomore !

Has anyone got any recommendations for cheapish running leggings? I’m not bothered about brands. My favourite pair are from Primark of all places! But they are obviously a no-go atm with lockdown. I have some Adidas ones which are okay and some Amazon ones which are dreadful.

I don’t really want to pay too much as I’m losing weight reasonably quickly. Any suggestions?

fellrunner85 · 02/03/2021 16:10

Decathlon are the best cheap running leggings by an absolute mile, @BobVance Smile

tizwozliz · 02/03/2021 16:15

I paid 12.99 for some from Decathlon last week. My local one is still open. Plenty of choice

BobVance · 02/03/2021 16:50

Thanks @fellrunner85 and @tizwozliz - Declathon it is!

Fellrunner - was that pun intended?! Grin

fellrunner85 · 02/03/2021 17:00

It was!!! Grin

randomsabreuse · 02/03/2021 17:02

If Aldi have any in I've got on well with theirs and Crivit (Lidl) have been decent as well, plus less effort to acquire if you're in there anyway. In Scotland so I can't really justify leaving my county to click and collect at Decathlon, but they also deliver to Asda plus have home delivery options as well. I also have a pair from More Miles which I like - slightly thicker than my Karrimor and Aldi pairs. Aurique from Amazon are ok. More Miles and Amazon both tried in my quest to replace my fleece lined Aldi ones which suffered the inevitable fate that all my leggings suffer - inside thigh wearing through, which is why I have gone cheap so far. I'm interested to see how well the pricier brands cope when I "win" my prizes - leggings are much more motivating than bling, t-shirts and bananas!

My DD has several pair

WhereAreWeNow · 02/03/2021 17:39

I really like the Gap running leggings. They're really thick and stretchy and they hold me in so no jiggling. They're on the pricey side but they're endlessly having 40% off deals so you can usually get a pair for about £20. They come in longer lengths too which works for me.

emilyjeff · 02/03/2021 17:55

Evening all
Ran this morning, intending to do 2.5 miles circular route but footpath was closed along the way so had to turn back. It made about 2 miles so I just left it at that. One of my faults is I always go off too fast so was trying to run at a steady pace throughout
I actually don't have many pairs of running leggings, one thinnish adidas pair and one thicker for when it's really cold. As soon as its a bit warmer the shorts will be out!!

PrincessConsuela12 · 02/03/2021 17:58

Hi all,

I've just completed my first C25K, first time running since I had DD. I've never been a runner or very fast but I'd like to be Smile

It says to wait a day in between, as it stands it's easier for me to run weekdays so does it really matter if I do them closer together or even 4 a week instead of 3?

Onedropbeat · 02/03/2021 19:04

I do mine on a Monday Wednesday and Friday to keep a days rest inbetween
But those days I’m generally hill walking

I have friends who only run Friday to Sunday without a break and they get on fine

You’ll get a feel for if you need the break or not

Onedropbeat · 02/03/2021 19:09

And congratulations on your first run! Star

randomsabreuse · 02/03/2021 19:43

I'd stick to having a rest day between runs as "recovery" is important, especially if you're not used to the impact of running. I was really feeling it in lockdown 1 doing Joe Wicks every week day and running at weekends so I try for at least 2 days without running (or HIIT).

I've started doing low impact step on non running days as my step count was dire with the lack of a school run. Seems not to cause problems so far.
