Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

@Onedropbeat I wouldn't worry too much. You have still been running the same amount of time, which is great, and carrying on like that your pace will increase.
Sometimes I have to tell myself it doesn't matter how far I run, I am running x amount of minutes longer than I was when I didn't even attempt to run.

Blobby10 · 16/02/2021 09:21

@wizzler you can do it! its somehow easier to just keep the same rhythm rather than stopping and starting Grin

Blobby10 · 16/02/2021 09:23

I find my Strava feed on my phone is around 0.25 mile out compared to mapometer.gb or other web-based route planners. When cycling with my OH both Strava and his garmin record about the same distance but the garmin usually says our average speed is faster as it auto pauses for traffic lights whereas strava doesn't. At least I think that's what it is!!

redcandlelight · 16/02/2021 09:32

maybe it's location and device dependent?

I measured my routes on maps and use strava on the phone.
compared to dh's smart watch, strava is very acurate. it also gives 2 times: active and total. the total including the breaks for re-tieing shoes, traffic lights etc.

tizwozliz · 16/02/2021 09:48

I'd expect a less accurate gps to underestimate rather than over estimate distance

fellrunner85 · 16/02/2021 10:33

I think there's a bit of confusion on this thread about what Strava is, what Garmin is, etc. Strava itself doesn't measure anything; it's just an app that takes the GPS from the phone or watch that does the measuring, and converts it into fancy maps and stats. And GPS on phones is less accurate than watches in 99.9% of cases, because the phone isn't tracking you constantly.

BUT.... what's important at this stage isn't distance, necessarily, but time on feet. At c25k stage you're still progressing so quickly that it really doesnt matter if it takes 30 mins to run 3k, 4k or 5k. Two years down the line, when you're trying to shave 5 seconds off your mile splits, this stuff might matter more... but at the beginning it really is just about time on feet, enjoying yourself, and finding your rhythm.

schoolcook · 16/02/2021 13:00

I've finally treated myself to a garmin watch Grin

I'm regularly running 5-7 K now with the odd 10 K thrown in so I feel like I deserve it.

Bug draw was not having to take my phone out with me.

Therearenomore · 16/02/2021 13:09

Nice schoolcook!

I have a little Garmin I use for my bike and took it out with me to test the other night and on the whole, it was about the same distance. My phone is a Huwaiui P10 and has pretty accurate GPS but DH has the P9 and it's shockingly bad.

schoolcook · 16/02/2021 15:13

I find my phone so bulky am looking forward to ditching it.

I've pondered the discrepancy between Fitbit / map my run etc so much that I'm going to enjoy just going with one device and not questioning it.

Onedropbeat · 16/02/2021 17:43

I really enjoyed running without my phone and having my watch track me and my DH able to see where I am gives me the safety feeling I needed should anything happen whilst I’m out in the dark

I now need to figure out how I can store some music on the watch as I ran totally in silence
I know the watch can do it but no idea how

And I haven’t got the brain capacity right now for reading instructions

schoolcook · 16/02/2021 21:54

@Onedropbeat I've been on this all evening and have had to abandon it as I have a chrome book - work of the devil apparently as garmin doesn't connect to it Hmm

You need to go to www.garmin.com/express and do it through that according to the website.

I'll do it tomorrow if I can use my son's PC.

Need to stick to taking the phone a bit longer as that's where the C210K app I'm using is.

schoolcook · 16/02/2021 21:55

@Onedropbeat how can he track you ?
I need to work this out for my DD.

Cavagirl · 17/02/2021 15:08

W9R2 done! I have stretched this out!! Skipped quite a few days due to the ice so had to force myself out in the pouring rain today so I didn't get too far behind... it hurt and I felt it. Strangely though went further than R1, just over 5.2km (including warmup) so not sure how that happened. Suspect I will feel it tomorrow, foam roller here I come....
Good luck everyone out today, hope it's dry for you.

redcandlelight · 17/02/2021 17:56

well done cava
are you ready to graduate?

back from a nice gentle 5k in the park. lots of runners there including my friend (who I don't know but we always give a friendly wave and smile when we see each other running)

WellJuhnelle · 17/02/2021 18:01

How exciting @Cavagirl! What is your plan for running post-C25K?

W2D3 done here - a week later than planned as I had a week off because of my knees Angry. Think I need to work on my glute strength and look into getting some insoles as I overpronate.

Feeling some trepidation about the 3 minute runs next week but I never thought I could do the 90 seconds runs and did them with ease so I think it will be mind over matter

wizzler · 17/02/2021 19:00

Well done @Cavagirl .

I've just got back from w5r2. Cannot believe I ran for 8 mins without stopping .

Onedropbeat · 17/02/2021 19:01

@schoolcook my watch shows up on my fine my friends app so he can track me through that

Onedropbeat · 17/02/2021 19:02

@Cavagirlthats brilliant

Do you know your average minute per km?

schoolcook · 17/02/2021 19:03

@Onedropbeat thank you.

WhereAreWeNow · 17/02/2021 19:43

W7 r2 done this morning. Felt quite hard going but I'm glad I did it. It's funny how one run can feel so good and you feel you're making progress then the next run you're back to feeling like a sack of potatoes!
So, those of you who are tracking your distance, how are you doing that? With a Fitbit or similar? Do I need to get an app on my phone to measure distance?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/02/2021 20:04

Hey Cava!

Today I ran W9R2. Missed some days due to ice and snow. So I’m behind having missed some days due to weather.

It was so tough. Really annoyed with the weather for messing up my runs. The first 10 mins was hell, thought I wouldn’t manage the full time. But it got better and I did finish. My knee is hurting now, think I need a good stretch.

Only one more run to go before graduation!!

I swapped Jo for Sarah today to see what she was like and she was far more chatty than Jo was on my last run. Still glad overall I chose Jo. But Sarah was motivating today. Even if she did need a lie down afterwards Grin

redcandlelight · 17/02/2021 20:44

It's funny how one run can feel so good and you feel you're making progress then the next run you're back to feeling like a sack of potatoes!

but sometimes you can have a hate-every-step run that feels really really hard but later you look at the ground you covered or your exercise app analysis and it was actually a 'good' run.

Therearenomore · 17/02/2021 20:47

My new shoes arrived today after a magical mystery tour around Europe and I've just done w2r2 after giving my ankles a break for a while. Such a difference Shock No ankle crunching at the start and no ankle pain while I was doing the running bits. I'm so chuffed!

redcandlelight · 17/02/2021 20:56

I'm looking at new shoes as well. but only online so far.
I have funny feet and really need to try them on before buying.

Shock at the prices of some shoes though.

Cavagirl · 17/02/2021 21:14

redcandlelight errrrr depends what you mean by ready??? I think I'd be fine to run 5k but I'm not ready to give up having someone tell me what to do haha! I'll need some help keeping it up I'm sure...I think I'm going to do W9 on repeat for a bit and see how I go...
welljuhnelle wizzler Well done on your runs today!! Walking intervals will soon be a distant memory!
onedropbeat I can't see the running-only section on strava without the walk don't know how to but for most of the bits that it subsections I'm doing 6.30ish/km although I ran the last km at 6.00 today because my two favourite songs were playing 😂 I've checked on Google earth and the distance seems quite accurate with my phone GPS
Dobby!! I thought you might have graduated without me!! 😭 we need to make sure we run our 5kms together!!!
