Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

I didn’t take gloves today
Will do next time

They warmed up eventually luckily

Where does everyone keep their phone?

I just hold onto it so I can keep an eye on the time (and I have no pockets)

redcandlelight · 30/01/2021 15:44

for the phone: a cheap arm sleeve.
a couple of my leggings have phone pockets, but one in an awkward position (where leg/hip bend) and another keeps moving south when more than my key is in there...

I know strava is more than a run measurer, I use it more to track the runs, the route and speed. and to analyse my 'slumps' (usually at 4km) and work to improve that.

fellrunner85 · 30/01/2021 15:57

If you don't have a back pocket in your shorts/leggings, phones are best carried in a flipbelt. Though you probably won't want your phone with you anyway, once you finish c25k, decide you want accurate tracking, and upgrade to a running watch Grin

Arm straps are awful and really get in the way/start chafing/dig in or slide down when you're running for any distance. For that reason they're a sure-fire marker of a running newbie, as well. I don't mean that in a mean way, but in the same way as running while holding a water bottle, or running in thick jogging bottoms - these are signifies that mark new runners out from those of us who've been at it a while. As they're all things that you can cope with until you're running for an hour or so, after which they become a real faff Smile

Onedropbeat My hands were also cold and numb when I got back this morning. Will definitely be taking gloves next time.
minipie · 30/01/2021 16:22

Where do you put the gloves once you’ve warmed up?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/01/2021 17:09

I put my gloves in my jacket pocket or down my leggings.

Onedropbeat · 30/01/2021 18:09

@fellrunner85 what is a running watch? Grin

Not heard of a flip belt. Will look into it.
Maybe il just find leggings with a pocket

SourMilkGhyll · 30/01/2021 18:12

It's a long time since I last checked in here, but good to read how everyone is finding the different weeks. Yesterday I completed w5r2 so I'm feeling very proud of myself.
The crunch will come in w6. I've tried this twice before and quit in w6 both times through injury, so I'll be pleased when next week is done.

Onedropbeat · 30/01/2021 18:16

My big toes are absolutely killing dyed this mornings run

fellrunner85 · 30/01/2021 19:14

Flipbelts are really popular, especially among distance runners, as they're an easy way of carrying a phone, gels, keys etc without carrying a pack or using pockets:

Cavagirl · 30/01/2021 19:57

@Onedropbeat everyone was raving about these on one of the other running threads www.amazon.co.uk/Sugar-Pocket-Leggings-Fitness-Workout/dp/B07GV8RPV7/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?dchild=1&psc=1&s=clothing&th=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1610138385&refinements=p_89%3ASugar%2BPocket&sr=1-6
I am still wearing enough layers just to shove my phone in my pocket but will definitely look at these for the spring

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/01/2021 20:19

Those flip belts. Do they work if you have ample hips and a bit of a belly? .....asking for a friend Grin

redcandlelight · 30/01/2021 20:28

I tried a belt, but it either was too tight and restrictive or too floppy with the phone in it.
I'm happy with a sleeve for now :o
I need to take keys/id/phone with me.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/01/2021 20:54

That’s what I was thinking. I’ve got an arm thingy. I find it ok. Usually I have a pocket.

Onedropbeat · 30/01/2021 21:00

I am thinking something around my waist would feel uncomfortable running

fellrunner85 · 30/01/2021 21:07

@onedropbeat - Nike Pegasus, definitely, for shoes. I like Ultra Boosts too, and have both, but Pegs are a better all-rounder in my view.

As for the flipbelt, it's very comfortable over long distances. I've run marathons in mine. Far more comfortable than an arm band or waist pack or similar - they're not like ordinary running waist packs at all. Those drive me nuts.

@DobbyTheHouseElk - if anything, Flipbelts are better if you have a bit of a tummy as it helps them stay put! When I'm in marathon racing snake shape, mine rides up as my waist is very narrow and my hips are wider my comparison, which is annoying. When I'm carrying more weight, not so much of an issue Grin

randomsabreuse · 30/01/2021 21:14

I have a mini running backpack/vest from Decathlon. Bought it when I was recovering from appendix removal as I didn't want extra pressure/rubbing on scars but it's great for carrying layers/gloves/hats in winter. Has a zip pocket for keys too, plus water bladder but mostly I've been carrying it in slightly dodgy weather so I have a foil blanket just in case.

If anyone is looking for trail shoes which seem ok in slight snow and great in mud, More Miles Cheviot 4s are around £25 - 30. Mine were from Start Sport I think.

Wouldn't advise as an only pair for pure tarmac running but great off road so far and a very good price!

wizzler · 31/01/2021 07:45

Can I ask for some advice about inclines? I ve just done w3r1 and I'm doing ok until I come to the slightest uphill slope. It completely floors me.
I'm planning my route so that I am always running on either a flat or a downhill pavement.
Should I be making myself run uphill? Or is this something that will just happen naturally as I get more used to running?

fellrunner85 · 31/01/2021 07:52

You need to make yourself run uphill from the start @wizzler (if it's an ordinary incline that is; presume we're not talking about a mountain with scrambling involved!)
It's far, far easier if you incorporate hills from the beginning, as you get used to them from the start. Just slow down to the point where your effort is the same as on the flat. It's ok if that's a fast walk, at first. By the end of c25k you'll then be running inclines with no bother, whereas those who purposely avoid hills still don't run them even years later...!

This is a really lovely thread, it’s full of encouragement. I’m sure you have the best intentions, but we are not all fantastic runners or skinny like you are. Is it possible you can be a bit kinder in some of your comments. Occasionally you are coming across a bit like a bouncy neon runner. Grin

minipie · 31/01/2021 09:41

Bugger! I went for a run on Friday, after my week off and dip in motivation, enjoyed it... but I’ve done my knee in 😩 Nothing terrible but it’s definitely a bit strained and stiff and running wouldn’t be a good idea.

Ah well. Hope everyone else has good runs today! Cavagirl and Dobby you must be approaching w9 right?

I have a narrow, running backpack that's great. It has plenty of straps so it doesn't jig about and there s enough room for a small water bottle. Because it's narrow the water doesn't flip around. And I only half fill it so it's light.
Cavagirl · 31/01/2021 09:48

Well done minipie but sorry to hear about your knee! Rest rest rest. Friday wasn't the day to run it seems - my lower calf/achilles has been really sore since then too, I was actually a bit limpy yesterday. I'm vainly hoping it is only due to over-zealous foam rolling.... it will definitely be another day or two I think. And yes, due to start W8 - crazy days!
