Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

@Trulyatraditionalman

Hi all, new to this thread! I completed wk 4 run 2 today - I surprised myself by running for 8 minutes instead of 5 on the final interval! I'm sure this isn't strictly allowed but I made sure I did the full cool down walk afterwards.

Is week 5 as scary as it's made out to be???

You're same level as me! I just completed w4r1.
Is w5 supposed to be difficult? I don't mind repeating weeks if I have to.
likeamillpond · 28/01/2021 11:53

Dumb question
How do I bold a person's name when I'm quoting them? Confused

I was really worried about r3 on week 5. But it was fine. I don’t know how I did it, but I trusted I could.

Huge buzz when I did it.

Jo told me I could and talked me through it, I found that helped. If you find it hard slow down a bit, but don’t stop. Then speed up again once you’ve caught your puff. But I think you will be fine. IF I can do it, anyone can.

GileadWivesAreFashionIcons · 28/01/2021 14:24

Hi everyone, hope you don’t mind me joining you 👋🏻
I’ve never run before but I started C25k in the first week of January, and I’m in week 4 now.
I haven’t told anyone I’m doing it, like PPs I keep imagining my big reveal at the end of week 9 (but also was v. worried about looking daft if I didn’t manage to complete W1 R1!)
I’ve been running in a pattern of Monday, Wednesday, Friday but the snow last weekend meant I couldn’t go out until yesterday. I surprised myself by not only actually doing it and not using the snow as an excuse to stop forever, but by actually being quite cross that I couldn’t go out on Monday or Tuesday! I was really glad to get out yesterday and I’m feeling super proud because I managed to run all of it without needing to stop. I want to tell someone but I’m still a bit cautious about telling anyone IRL and then I found this thread so I’m telling you lot!

redcandlelight · 28/01/2021 16:32

5k this afternoon.
it felt really cold even though last run was just above freezing (but sunny).
strava tells me I ran 6:11 min/km which I am pleased with.

me and the teens graduated end of september after starting in april or may.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/01/2021 16:33

@GileadWivesAreFashionIcons welcome! Come and join us.

I too haven’t told anyone. I’m going to do a reveal when I graduate..

It’s addictive.

minipie · 28/01/2021 17:14

Ok guys, I haven’t run for a week Blush. At first it was back hurting, then snow and ice, now.... I’m just making excuses really.

Any ideas on how to give myself a kick and get out there?
Also where should I re start? I “graduated” a couple of weeks ago but only ran about 3-4 times after graduating. Week 6 maybe?

Clearly I need a programme to follow or I fall off the wagon

redcandlelight · 28/01/2021 17:49

mini
put it in your calendar.
and then just get out.

as a pp said you will feel more regret if you don't go out than if you do go.

for me, I usually do a midweek 5k in a park with the teens and a longer 45 min or so at the weekend along canals and through a string of parks. happy to keep my fitness ticking over until the spring when I want to expand a bit more towards 10k.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/01/2021 18:28

minipie tomorrow. Put the last week behind you, start fresh tomorrow. I doubt you’ve lost much fitness in a week. Go out and see how far you get. I’ll be cheering you on.

Onedropbeat · 28/01/2021 18:58

Please could anyone recommend some trainers for a newbie?

I only started last week and done 3 runs so far and loving it but I’ve been running in my only pair of trainers which are some new balance 574

Unless these are fine for doing a 5k?

Would better trainers help?

Onedropbeat · 28/01/2021 18:59

Also, I’m really embarrassed to admit that the whole time c25k has been going I have avoided doing it thinking it was 25k runs Blush

So pleased that 5k is the aim here Grin

minipie · 28/01/2021 19:04

Thank you both. You’re right I need to put it in my calendar in advance rather than thinking “I’ll go when I can”... there is always something more pressing or DH is unavailable for childcare 🙄. Weather looks decent tomorrow afternoon so I will see when DH can have the DC, and put it in for then.

Onedropbeat I think it depends whether you’re getting any aches and pains. I found I got shin pain when I started, switched to a newer pair and it disappeared. But if you have no pain then yours may well be fine! I do like having a different pair for running than my daily trainers, just so my daily trainers don’t get so beaten up and muddy and sweaty, but it depends whether you wear your new balances much or not.

minipie · 28/01/2021 19:04

😂 definitely not running 25k any time soon —ever—

wizzler · 28/01/2021 20:19

W2R2 done.
Starting to look forward to days with a run in them now.

Welcome newbies!

Definitely plan exactly when you'll go out, @minipie - I've tried c25k twice before (years ago) and failed to get past w3 - I think the main difference this time is knowing exactly when I'm going to run, so if I don't go then it's clear I've missed a run... and I feel guilty!

@Onedropbeat I guess if they're working for you they're fine, but I have some 574s too and I'd definitely have classified them as a casual wear style rather than for actual exercise! I got some Nike Pegasus on my husband's recommendation. They can be expensive but if you're not fussy on colour last season's will be cheaper - and Nike kids' sizes go up to a 6 so I saved on VAT too.

I managed w8r1 yesterday! Was quite slow and I looked like a tomato when I came back in (maybe because it wasn't freezing cold like every other run so far!) but I felt better about it afterwards than I did about any of w7.

Onedropbeat · 29/01/2021 10:30

The 574’s don’t have a lot of cushioning at all really.
I don’t have achy joints yet but I can’t imagine it’s doing them any good either
The Nike Pegasus look good

It’s a shame as I got given a pair of Hoka one one’s a few years ago but subsequently gave them away myself as I never wore them!

Wondering what’s more important - decent trainers or decent leggings (I’m just running in a pair of post maternity ones Blush)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/01/2021 13:23

Decent trainers I think. Unless your leggings are likely to fall down.....

I’d think it’s easier to pick up cheap leggings than cheap trainers.

I have some running leggings from TU Sainsburys. They are fine.

Blobby10 · 29/01/2021 13:28

Wk 3 run 3 completed this morning but I can see why they recommend leaving a day between runs!!! I've done wk 3 in consecutive days and was tired this morning and slow!!

onedropbeat decent trainers definitely more important than decent leggings in my opinion. I use Asics as I have quite wide feet but always need half a size bigger than I would normally buy in trainer ie 6.5 rather than 6 when i'm a 5 shoe. i buy from sportsshoes.com as they do decent discounts and I'm not bothered about having trainers from 2-3 'seasons' ago!

If you're only starting out on the C25K route, don't worry too much about gait analysis etc as your gait may change quite a bit as you become more proficient at running but this won't necessarily happen over only 5k. But cushioning IS important especially if you're a bit overweight - every stride puts something like 3 times your bodyweight through the joints on that leg so cushioning will help protect you a bit.

fellrunner85 · 29/01/2021 13:33

Shock TRAINERS! Trainers, trainers, trainers. The only things you need to spend money pn, when it comes to running, are trainers and a sports bra. Everything else can be from Tesco if needs be. But good trainers are essential to prevent injury.

Also, Nike Pegasus are my very favourite road shoes ever. I've run in everything from Brooks to Hoka to Asics to Saucony and now always run in Pegs on the road. They're light enough not to be clompy and slow, but also cushioned enough for proper distances. I love them!

Cavagirl · 29/01/2021 14:11

Decent trainers I think. Unless your leggings are likely to fall down.....
I would second this as well as decent pants having had my pants fall down within my leggings on a particularly uncomfortable W4 run 😳
Welcome to all the newbies!
Making myself accountable as like @minipie I've had a bit of a naughty week and only made it out Monday, need to start W8 later - I am going!!! Yes I am!

minipie · 29/01/2021 14:22

I’m going at 3!! Yes I am 😬

Onedropbeat · 29/01/2021 15:50

Decent trainers it is

Bringing forward Saturdays run up tonight based on forecast
