Hi everyone

I've started this thread as I couldn't add any more posts to the other one. Hopefully you all find this thread!!

Hope everyone had enjoyed their day - so bored at home right now I'm glad I have the run to look forward to. Waited till it got dark and I headed out with my new running buddy - my 11yo ds. Yes he ran ahead of me and stopped a few times so I could catch up, but we ran 4.46km in 33mins and I'm so proud of both of us! (And little dog of course who's my faithful running buddy). It was a bit drizzly tonight which was actually quite nice as it wasn't that cold so the rain cooled me off a bit.

I've been thinking of how I can improve my stride length and I wonder if I can use my rest days to do W1r1 and try to do it with much longer strides? Seeing my son running I realise how inefficient my stride is. If I can only learn to open my stride I could run much further in the same time. If I can walk tomorrow I might try that to see if I can.

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs today!

Hi ElizabethinherGermanGarden
We are on the same week!
I haven't mastered listening to music and the app yet.
I want to create a playlist that's really really S. L. O. W. Smile

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 19/01/2021 18:41

Yesterday was the first time I managed it - it is a bit tricky. I don't match music to my pace though (I go about half speed!(

redcandlelight · 20/01/2021 09:52

it's very windy this week. too dangerous to go out for a run, a couple of trees down on my running routes...
will do some rope skipping and strengthening exercises instead.

likeamillpond · 20/01/2021 10:40

Just finished W2r3.
The weather is starting to close in now so I think I got out just in time!
I'm going to try and do some strength training in between runs.
There are enough youtube videos out there to help me!

I agree about the wind. It can be dangerous, not to mention hard work if you're running into it. Rain I don't mind too much. I'll go out running in rain.
Moonsbury · 20/01/2021 11:21

Can I join?
This morning I got out and did my first ever c25k 'run'.
My walking minutes were much longer than my running minute but I counted to 60 for the running bit so I'm fairly sure I did enough to make it count and I feel bloody brilliant about having done it!
I was very very slow, wobbling all over the place and bright red in the face but I did it!

Other than generally feeling uncomfortable, boobs going up while my bum went down and vice versa - it's my shins! Shin splints! I remember this from the times I used to try and run in the gym! I'm not doing too much too fast as I literally could not do less!! Hahah!

And you know what my partner said when I came huffing and puffing back to the house feeling damn proud of fat self....

Nothing.

likeamillpond · 20/01/2021 12:33

Hi Moonsbury.
I'm only at the end of week 2. Welcome!
I remember feeling amazing after the first run as well.
I've bought some proper running shoes and don't get shin splints. Plus I run really slow which might help..
. Also wearing a good sports bras a game changer.
My understanding ding is that the shoes and sports bra need to be right and you can make do with any other gear.

redcandlelight · 20/01/2021 12:39

absolutely a suitable bra is essential.
until you can get a new sports bra you could try wearing 2 on top of each other for extra support.

shoes as well, there is lots of info in this thread. they don't need to be expensive, decathlon has decent ones.
if you continue having issues with shins go and have a session with a physio to look at shoes, posture and gait.

likeamillpond · 20/01/2021 13:12

I've got the M & S sports bra (black and grey with yellow trim)
and it's been brilliant.
It doesn't ride up and keeps everything in place

Cavagirl · 20/01/2021 14:19

W7R1 done! Very rainy and blowy here, but the mild temperature was a nice change from recent runs. Running into a headwind made me feel like one of those athletes you see running training with an elastic band around their waist! Had serious points of nearly giving up, but it's entirely mental. I'm finding the continuous runs without the intervals to break it up quite challenging to keep going. Hopefully it's just getting used to it.

Thanks 😊 I thought my trainers were ok. New Balance, I definitely need a sports bra- I just layered up with vest tops today - it was my belly that needed support- belly bra.... hmmmm 🧐. Hoping to run again Friday and will take the rest day seriously so I don't kill myself! Thanks
DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/01/2021 13:25

I have a M&S sports bra, ultimate I think it’s called. Got it in April for PE with joe as I’d lost too much weight for my previous one. Didn’t have much hope it would work, but it’s great.

Well done and hello to the newbies.

W7R1 today, all was ok. I think I’ve got over my mental block with this. I’m glad to stop at the end, but I’m happy running and being outside in the fresh air now. It’s almost enjoyable. Felt quite out of breath to start with, but after a few minutes I got the right pace and something clicks and I find my pace.

Tracks from The Greatest Showman today, that took my mind off running.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 21/01/2021 18:32

Just finished w2r2 - tried to push myself a little bit more than w2r1 so went a little bit faster for both running and walking (I'm on a treadmill so can watch the speed).

It was an error!

I got to the end but then had to lie down groaning for half an hour. Does anyone else have trouble with abdominal pains when they push themselves, a bit like period pain? I think I have no core muscles at all and need to do something to make sure all the wobbly bits stay in check. Love the idea of a belly bra! Am wondering whether wearing spanx might actually be helpful to stop it all jiggling about uncontrollably.

Any suggestions? Apart from slow down a bit, which I might do but would rather not if I can learn to bear it.

redcandlelight · 21/01/2021 18:41

garden sounds like stitches 'seitenstechen'

I get them when I eat of drink too close to a run.
breathing seems to help for me, 4 steps breathing out 2 steps in

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 21/01/2021 19:56

Thank you - I'll have a google and try to get control of my breathing.

likeamillpond · 22/01/2021 08:32

Hi Elizabeth.
There are some good strength training excercises specifically for runners on YouTube, that can be done on days when you're not running
I do tons of walking (flat and hills) so thought I had really strong legs, but running uses different muscles and I think I'm weak in the glutes. I did a spin class once and really battled! with the standing up bitd
So I'm trying to strengthen all that area.
You could possibly find excercises that strengthen the core????

Ps we are at the same level. I've just finished W2.

I'm debating whether to run this morning or wait till the afternoon when the frost has gone.
I dont have a treadmill so it forces me to go outside. 😀

Cavagirl · 22/01/2021 15:23

W7R2 today. It's so nice and sunny out there. I found the middle 10 minutes really tough, think I need to adjust my playlist to put a few really motivational songs in the middle! Felt knackered at the end and then saw I ran 240m further than R1 so pretty pleased with that.
Enjoy your runs today everyone!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/01/2021 16:40

Well done cavagirl

I agree with the upbeat music in the middle of the run. I haven’t solved it yet. But I’ve downloaded or I think I have, the music that goes to the app. So I’m hoping they’ve put some lifting tracks in the middle.

YouFightLikeADairyFarmer · 23/01/2021 10:34

I feel like I've fallen off the wagon this week - didn't go for my Thursday run because it was absolutely throwing it down here - I've been out in rain before and have even invested in a lightweight jacket so I can't use rain as an excuse, but this was ridiculous. I should go today, but am struggling to motivate myself - help me! This week is the first time I've not completed three runs in a week - am up to W7R2 and finding the longer runs this week really challenging - feel a bit like I've "failed"!

My main difficulty is that I have an 11 month old so I'm really limited on when I can run - I usually go over her morning nap on the days that my 3 year old is at nursery (husband works from home and she's reliable enough with napping that I just about have time to run and shower afterwards!) but if I miss that window then it's difficult to find another. Today should be easy to just go out, but I was up from about 12.30 - 4am this morning snatching 20 minute snoozes in between wake ups, and I'm knackered... Sad

Elizabeth - on the wobbly tummy front, have you got some proper running tights/leggings? Mine are high waisted and really hold everything in - a bit like Spanx but more comfortable and no rolling down! Might be worth investing in some.

Cavagirl · 23/01/2021 11:09

@YouFightLikeADairyFarmer I've been really struggling with W7 motivation too but once you're out there it's fine and you'll feel soooooooo good once you've done it!
Get it done otherwise you'll spend the rest of the day wasting headspace on it Smile

redcandlelight · 23/01/2021 11:37

farmer just get out there.
maybe go a week back to find your mojo again.
good luck.

yes to running leggings containing the wobble. high waisted yoga pants could work as well.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2021 11:49

@YouFightLikeADairyFarmer go out...you’ve got this far. You can do it. Get some upbeat music or a podcast. I see it as my free time. Beautiful day here. You’ll be back home in 35 mins feeling good.

Today I did w7r2 so I’m at the same stage as you. I was keen to go out, but the run was hard. Cold and windy which doesn’t bother me so much, but my path was flooded and icy. So I had to hop and jump around the floods and find some solid ground which wasn’t ice.

The first part was so hard, I almost gave up. But I carried on and it did get better. I felt so slow, but I got to the halfway point at the same time as usual which was confusing. Second half was better. I quickly paused the app and put better music on and it was easier.

I’m thinking I have put weight on and that’s why it’s hard work. I was walking more, but now this is my allotted exercise allowance I can’t go for a family walk as well. So I’m putting weight on I think. Which seems silly really as I’m trying to run every other day. Weather dependent.

Hope we get some warmer weather soon. I don’t like it when the route is icy.

Sending encouragement to cava and farmer and everyone who is getting out there and battling on in a chilly January! StarStar

Please can I join?
I did my first run today.
I’ve never ran before (apart from school cross country)

I did 2.6mm in 20 mins

It seems nothing but I certainly felt it and hoping it’s a good start

Was lovely to get my heart pumping on an icy fresh bright morning

Not too sure how il feel in the week when it’s drizzling again

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2021 11:56

Welcome Onedropbeat. Putting on running shoes and stepping out of the door is the hardest thing. I hope you enjoy the program. I can’t believe I’m on week 7 now. It really works. It’s a beautiful sunny day here too.

Onedropbeat · 23/01/2021 11:59

Thank you. That’s positive vibes for me.
I do hope I get further soon.

I guess it’s a good tike of year to start as the days get longer and hopefully brighter

I need to do it at night when DH gets home because of the children so it would be nice to have some light to do it in

I didn’t have any proper gear but managed in a pair of snug leggings and an old hiking T-shirt
