Spin bikes...... info please

Prior to lockdown I was an avid spinner, going 2-3 times per week to a local gym with Schwinn bikes.

I really miss it. I have been running over the past 6 months but it's not the same, and I now have sciatica and achilles tendonitis to show for it!

I am looking to get a spin bike to have at home and use with an app. Peloton seem to have rave reviews, but I just don't have that kind of money.

I am looking a Schwinn bikes as I know these are good. I am looking on gumtree and eBay.

Is anyone able to share some insight into the different types please? Comparing IC8 with IC pro 20 and AC performance plus.

Looking for quality of bike. But also compatibility with an iPad and an app.

Thanks in advance

I can't advise on the bikes but I just wanted to empathise. I'm in exactly the same situation. Spinning was great as it's low impact- I'm now here with back, hip & ankle problems on my right side from trying to run. We used Keiser bikes in our gym & I loved the digital display for keeping me accountable & to compete with myself/ my last speeds / distance etc.

Thanks. Can you remember the model? They’re all so pricy, I just don’t want to make a mistake!

I think it was the M3 - it definitely wasn't the M3i

I love spin and we invested in a Peloton. Have you looked at them. Both DH and I and DS use it and we do yoga and other classes all which come in your subscription.

@Bloomburger aren't Pelotons ferociously pricey?

Bloomburger · 22/09/2020 17:25

About £1500 at present I think as they've brought out a new one which is more expensive.

Not sure how that compares to other spin bikes.

I'm a PT so have used lots of different bikes and have to say the quality of build and classes you can access are brilliant. Such a varied range of classes and it allows you to do live classes or recorded ones as well as strength, yoga, boot camp .......

You don't have to pay it all upfront too and can see which of your friends with bikes have done and are doing the same classes and pot yourself against people whilst doing the classes.

It's quite addictive.

What app are you wanting to use? If you're not bothered about leaderboards etc you could get yourself any spin bike and just use the Peloton app for about £12.99 a month (as opposed to £40 odd a month if you have a Peloton bike) which gives you access to all the classes, just without the stats.

if you bought something like a Keiser M3 you'll have power, gears and cadence on the display. If you go for something more basic you can buy a little cadence sensor from Wahoo and connect it to your watch via bluetooth so you'd only be missing the gears and power but if you go to regular classes you'd be able to gauge it anyway.

If you were willing to buy a more basic bike, look out for Star Trac/Spinner bikes which often pop up on marketplace for good prices.
