Is David Lloyd worth it?

I’m soon to be moving house and have (stupidly) been looking into the local David Lloyd. It looks amazing but at £165 per month, seems ridiculous! It’s just for me but I’d want the spa so that’s the only package that’d work for me. Is anyone a member? Do you feel it’s worth it?

Is it the Royal Berkshire club? If so yes it is lovely!

No, Croydon Purley way! The spa looks amazing in the pics 😍

People I know have been really pissed off when our local DL has cancelled classes, changed timetables and hiked the prices massively. The contract says that they can increase prices with no warning and you're tied in. The process of trying to leave is very difficult.

For £165 you could have a really nice spa day each month! Champneys, etc.

Ah I only know the Royal Berkshire but they also have the spa - love the club - yes only Les Mills pump now rather than attack, combat & step but others classes are fabulous and a busy timetable. Also depends if you will spend time at the club relaxing in the club room - there is an adults only area so nice to have a coffee & read. Expensive I guess if you literally want to just use the spa but if using the other facilities great - more than just a gym - definitely a club feel but friendly and nice to take people for lunch or coffee. Mine has an outdoor pool and patio area too.

It is worth it. Sadly, following the breakdown of my marriage I couldn’t afford it anymore. I’d return in a heartbeat if I could afford it though.

I have a membership, not at the one you're looking at, love the outdoor pool and gym, I was getting mine half price through work so I was only paying £50 a month so worth it in that case, however my membership runs out end of October but I can't afford to carry it on, work have stopped the benefit now. Also at the moment they have stopped their Les Mills payments to save money, don't know if this is a countrywide thing though.

Not at the minute.

Classes are running at half capacity but not double the classes so you can’t get booked on. I don’t have a spa at my DL, just a steam room, jacuzzi and sauna but the sauna and steam room are closed due to Covid and only one person allowed in the jacuzzi at a time.

And yes, they’ve stopped Les Mills nationwide and that’s a permanent decision. Though they’re keeping Pump but not the others. They’re being replaced with in house DL instructor led classes which are no way near as good.

I'm a member (in fact I'm there now as my daughter is playing in the soft play after her tennis lesson). We use it a lot- family swimming, swimming lessons, tennis lessons and sports classes for the children. I do 2-3 classes a week (the classes I like haven't been affected by Covid but i didn't really do the Les Mills ones) and I swim a few times and my husband uses the gym 4x per week.

It is expensive but it suits our family. What we like the most is that we can go swimming as often as we like and in the school holidays we go 3-4 times a week. It is less than a milk from our house though so easy just to drop in.

Some of the instructor led classes are far better than Les Mills imo depends on the instructor really - Les Mills instructors teach a pre-choregraphed routine, now instructors can teach other stuff and some is excellent, some is still interval training, some still uses the bar. A wider age range are attending classes (Body balance was always a wide age range but combat & attack a narrower age range). At my club they have put on tons of extra classes. Unlike at other gyms, members do not have to clean any equipment used in classes there is a team who do this. If you only really like Les Mills then no DL would not be the club for you.
