Zwift

Does anyone use zwift?? Looking at the Wahoo kickr bike that goes with it...

Is it worth it??

I’ve taken up cycling during lockdown, and do about 100-130 miles a week now. Worried about the winter and the ability to ride outdoors as freely, with dark evenings and riding conditions.

So is zwift the way forward?

Over the winter, Zwift makes keeping cycling fit a lot more interesting than just doing turbo. I was sceptical when dh wanted to get a smart trainer, but we all used it a lot this winter and during lockdown. We just put my bike on the turbo (as dh and ds have carbon bikes). I really enjoy cycling the different routes

It’s brilliant. Much better than staring at a wall. Great training, particularly if you have a smart trainer.

Total Zwift addict here. Started cycling on Zwift in 2017 and never looked back. Love it. I use my normal road bike and a direct drive trainer (Tacx Neo). It’s a great training solution if you have kids - can cycle without leaving the house after they have gone to bed. And much safer than the roads (though I enjoy going outside as well).

Have a look at DCRainmaker’s website for reviews of the various trainers and smart bikes - and Zwift Insider for more stuff. And GP Lama for more reviews/videos. Can you tell I really like this stuff?

Thanks all 😊

I can’t believe how much I’ve fallen in love with cycling. I’ve never done it before, and didn’t have a bike as a child either. So it’s a new found love. Hence my concerns what happens as the weather changes and the nights start to pull in.

Thanks for all your advice, I will go and do my research. 😊

I tried it for a bit with a dumb trainer and it was so hard work I didn’t enjoy it much. I cycle quite a bit outdoors but Christ I was sweating buckets and not going very fast at all. I’m not sure if I hadn’t got it set up right but I think I was meant to have my trainer gear in the middle but cheated by turning that down, fiddled my weight so I seemed to go a bit faster. It was still hard work, just seemed to be grinding all the time.

But I loved the idea of it.

During lock down I switched from a dumb trainer to a smart trainer (Tacx Vortex)...a hand me down from DH who had upgraded to the Wahoo Kickr Core. I use to find the dumb trainer hard work...I could stick some music on or watch the iPad but it still felt hard going. Swapped to the smart trainer and signed up to Zwift and love it. I love the training plans and using it in ERG mode so it automatically adjusts the intensity. I like a goal and a target so I tend to do training rather than just rides but have enjoyed some of the France routes they've put up for Le Tour. I'm a runner at heart and have had a go on Zwift running but the calibration between my treadmill, Garmin and Zwift seems poor so I don't bother with it for running.

I’d like to try a smart trainer and zwift combo before committing but never seen a smart trainer set up in a bike shop to try out.
