Trainer trouble?!

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to running. I completed couch 2 5K last year & was running 3 times a week throughout the summer. I kind of stopped over the winter but since lockdown I’ve been going 2-3 times a week & run between 6-7k each time.
Back last year I got a pair of Brooks GTS trainers (on sale!) as someone told me they were good. I did find them very supportive but slightly tight (they were a 5-5.5)
After learning more about running shoes, I really wanted to get my gait (?!) measured and fitted properly however with lockdown I haven’t been able to. I read lots of reviews and decided to purchase some Asics gel trainers.
Since switching, I am having some ankle and knee pain 😔have never had this before. Is this common when you first change running shoes? I’m just hoping they will settle otherwise I’ve wasted £80 😔

Hello!

Now that shops are open again you should be able to get your gait checked, and I can confirm they are able to do it while socially distanced - I had it done just after shops opened.

What’s your actual shoe size?

You might find new shoes take a few runs to mould to your feet and settle in but they shouldn’t be giving you any pain. I have a pair of Asics gel which have worked well for me but Brooks are great. It really depends on what you want the shoes to do - for example, I’m a neutral runner so all I want is cushioning for road running. The Asics do that but don’t have much support - they’re a lightweight, low shoe.

Do get your gait checked is my advice!

Some of the shops are now reopening for trainer fittings. The Adrenaline GTS is a support shoe, your ASICS might be a neutral shoe or have a different level of support. I had a pair of Asics that gave me no end of niggles. I would stop running in them before you get injured and stick them on ebay or a local selling site. You may need to size up in the Brooks or they do a wider fit.

Thanks all for the replies. It’s such a shame that the Asics are not suiting me as they are comfy; I like the idea of selling them on though so I’ll look into that 👍😊
