Tennis

I've bitten the bullet and decided to take up tennis again, given that it's one of the only sports so far allowed under the lockdown easement.

I'm late 30s and not played properly for several years. Previously, I've been running 3 times per week for 3 miles at a trot (literally). So fitness is not non-existent, but tennis is a whole different ballgame...

I played singles (no doubles allowed yet) for the first time this week. Now my knees and shoulder are feeling the burn. Does anyone have any tips/ links for supplementary strength and conditioning exercises so I don't feel so sore? I don't want to pick up an injury when I've barely started.

I've tried Yoga with Adrienne to help with running, but I'm easily bored...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi to anyone who's starting tennis or going back. I started when I was 50 going to a group session which was really fun, and you got to know a few people of your standard or worse sometimes. Now been going to club "green" sessions for the last 13 years (play better when I'm not nervous) , as opposed to the "red" sessions which are for ex or current team players and generally a more competitive atmosphere. I love being outside in the fresh air and play all year round except when icy or rainy. I have had lessons over the years, but not that many, and I see people improving who play regularly who have had no lessons.

Me again, sorry didn't answer the thing about aches and pains. In an ideal world (non covid) I would start with playing doubles which is less hard work, but it sounds like you're really fit so you could progress to singles quite soon. Our club has been back to doubles in a sort of controlled environment for a few weeks now. If you Youtube there are various exercises for pre-tennis or post tennis etc.
