I need to tone my abdomen

Lougle · 22/05/2020 22:27

I'm 5'8" and 66kg, so healthy BMI, but I'm not very fit and have quite low stamina.

I've started cycling (usually 10 miles, but 17 today), but that's not likely to tone my post-3-babies (11 year old) abdomen.

What should I be doing to tone my abdomen?

Hula hooping and planks work well for me

The loose skin never goes but it does improve a little

I have a hula hoop. I don't have any loose skin, just loose muscles....I need to tone them!

I’m wanting the same! I’ve been looking at Kayla Itsines and thinking about having a try.

Lougle · 23/05/2020 23:41

Thanks, I'll look that up.

Anything good for core is good for abs. Uphill cycling where you're pulling on the handlebars gives abs and obliques a good workout.

If you want to concentrate on the abs more directly, start with static exercises - yoga and planks are good. Don't go straight to crunches, you'll put yourself off forever!

When you feel comfortable - might be weeks - graduate to also doing opposite arm and leg raises (start on all fours, lift arm/leg in opposite pairs straight out, hold, relax, switch pairs) and single-leg stretch (on your back, lift head and shoulders and legs slightly, lift one knee to your chest, grab and hold, relax and go to the other leg).

Once these stop being killer, you'll be able to do any abdominal exercises you like!

Joe Wicks PE session. This has transformed my abs.

Wow, thanks both of you. I'll give it a go. I got a road bike yesterday and the difference between that and my hybrid is phenomenal, so I hope I'll be able to do longer rides with less breaks.

There are loads of ab workouts on YouTube. Chloe Ting is good even though I'm old enough to be her mum.

Lougle · 27/05/2020 09:12

Ok, I'm going to have to actually do something! Thanks Smile
